Ever wonder why animals are so afraid of the vet?
- Details
Hi Everyone,
Many of us share our home with our extended family. No, Im not talking about your Aunts, uncles, cousins or grandparents, Im talking about your pets. The relationship between human and animal has been steadily evolving over time. Many of us care for our pets much like we would another member of our family. If you have an animal in your family it’s pretty much a given that you will have to take your pet to the vet at some point in their life. Do you know why animals are so frightened of their experience at the vet’s office? Well this is going to sound really simple, but get ready for it……It’s the fear of the unknown!
Think about it, how would you feel if someone took you to a place where they were going to do all sorts of procedures and tests on you but they didn’t explain what they were about to do. In any moment you could be poked, prodded, hurt, and there really isn’t any fair warning. Your mind would conjure up the worst even when it’s the simplest of exams. When we go to the doctor, they always tell us what they are about to do. They prepare us for any sort of discomfort or pain we will feel and they explain why they feel its necessary. But this is almost never the case when you take your furry, scaly, or feathered friend to the vet. Animals fear the unknown just as we do! Who can blame them, you never know what’s coming next!
Our fears of what could happen are often far worse than what actually happens. It’s the same for our animal friends. The fear of the unknown causes far more stress than actually dealing with the small bit of discomfort they will feel. Animals have a very high pain tolerance so it certainly isn’t the tiny pokes and prods that send them over the edge. It’s the fear that it could be excruciating or dangerous that makes them get so anxious.
So the next time you take your animal friend to the vet be sure to explain to them what is happening, and why they are going. This may feel strange for some of you to ask your vet to explain each procedure they do, big or small to the animal, so instead you could ask the vet to explain each procedure to you. A little explanation will go a very long way!
Just thought I would pass that tip along
If you have questions for the Angels, whether they are big or small, I invite you to schedule your session today!
Much love,
