Summer Solstice (Northern Hemisphere)
20 June 2016 at 3.34 pm PDT 6.34 pm EDT 11.34 pm BST (summer time GMT)
The last time we had a Full Moon at Solstice was June 21/22 1967. It occurred after the Solstice point and was at 00 degrees Capricorn, a world point. So we can say we have come full circle as our current Full Moon (7.02 am EDT) is at 29 degrees Sagittarius. The Moon will enter Capricorn at 7.55 am EDT. I know some of you reading this post were not born yet but for others think back to what was happening in your life 49 years ago. I know for me it was a turning point in my life. What I find fascinating is Chiron was in Pisces at that time close to where he is now. The 1960s were a turbulent time with lots of protests against the establishment and the motto “make love not war”. Chiron was trying to heal the world wound. But here we are again trying to heal the world wound. Will we ever “get it”? It seems to me that we have gone backwards but not in a healthy way.
Sol-Stice means Standing Still. The Sun (Sol) is at his most northern point in the Northern Hemisphere and appears to “stand still” for four days rising and setting at the same point. He is at the Tropic of Cancer and gives us our longest days. This is our Summer Solstice, the South Direction on The Medicine Wheel. It is the place of the child. Expansion, growth, adaptability, and learning to listen to our intuitive guidance is the theme. It is the place of the magical child. Seeing the world with WONDER. It is time for us all to reconnect with that wondrous aspect of self.
The Guardian of the South Direction is Coyote, the trickster. He is adaptable, smart, and cunning. His Medicine is to teach us to lighten up and learn to laugh at ourselves. That can be a little difficult these days with what is happening in the world. Ted Andrews says this in Animal-Speak “Coyote is creator, teacher, and keeper of magic.” He also associates Coyote with the Tarot Card “The Fool’. It is the energy linked to the planet Uranus, expect the unexpected. So with Coyote as guide enjoy whatever surprises come your way.
In the Southern Hemisphere this is Winter Solstice, the shortest day and longest night. This is the North direction on The Medicine Wheel, the place of solitude, and translating knowledge into wisdom. It is the place of the Elder. Knowledge can be powerful but without wisdom the meaning can be lost. The Guardian of the North is White Buffalo, manifesting abundance through prayer and invocation. The North is also the place of learning patience. There is a saying “everything comes to those who wait”. This is the time of rest and renewal so you will be ready for new beginnings at your Spring Equinox, Sept 22/23, depending on your time zone.
For all of us we are in the astrological month of Cancer. It is found on the Tarot Constellation of The Chariot, mastery through change. While Grandfather Sun visits here the focus is on our emotional wellbeing. But also paying attention to our spiritual nourishment. I have always seen the sign of Cancer symbolic of stepping onto the Mystical Path. Our planetary ruler is the Moon so expect emotions to fluctuate during this Sun Passage (to July 22). Pay attention to where the Moon is in her phase relationship to the Sun. I will post the phases when I get a chance. We are still on puppy duty during the week.
The other planetary rulers for the Sun’s journey through Cancer are Jupiter in Virgo (The Rainbow Bridge of Healing into Wholeness) and Neptune in Pisces (separateness or unity). Of course the Solstice Point sets the tone for the next 3 months. The Saturn/Neptune square (motivation to do things in new ways) is active until Sept. It is about building a strong spiritual foundation so you can experience the Oneness of All and be guided by Cosmic Love. On the material plane the question is still what is true, what is not true, what can never be true.
For the Northern Medicine Wheel our Animal Totem guide while the Sun visits Cancer is Flicker Woodpecker, transitions, new rhythms of growth, and healing love coming into our loves. For the Southern Medicine Wheel your guide is Snow Goose, following your dreams and Soul Vision. For all of us the Clan Mother for the sign of Cancer is Loves All Things. She is the mother of unconditional love and teaches us to love the truth that is found in the ONENESS. We are all connected. More of her story can be found in The 13 Original Clan Mothers and Earth Medicine both by Jamie Sams.
Happy Solstice wherever you are.
