Saturn turns retrograde 2016- Mar 25- 6.01 am EDT to Aug 13- 5.50 am EDT
With the retrograde periods of the planets from Jupiter out to Pluto I do not use the retrograde shadow period as we would be in refection mode for months. But I do look at the time frame that the retrograde asks us to review. Saturn begins his backward journey Mar 25 at 16 degrees Sagittarius and will reach 09 degrees Sagittarius when he moves Direct on Aug 13. The last time he was at that 09 degree was Dec 19, 2015. So we are now being asked to review our Saturn experience of the last three + months and make adjustments and corrections. The retrograde period is the time for review. Anyone with natal planets from 08 to 17 degrees is being particularly influenced especially the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces). But all signs will feel the Saturn lessons.
The gift of Saturn in Sagittarius is to build a strong foundation that allows us to be guided by our Higher Consciousness and Spiritual Vision. The Saturn principle is self-discipline, personal responsibility, and wisdom gained through experiences. The shadow side of Saturn is contraction, limitations, blocks, and delays. When he is retrograde he shows us what obstacles still need to be overcome both personally and in society. Given what is happening in the world it will be interesting to see how this Saturn in Sagittarius (beliefs and truth or dogma and doctrine) retrograde journey influences events for better or worse.
The two Animal Totems who guide us are Elk, strength, stamina, and the support of community, and Owl, the wisdom to see through deception. I believe Owl will be the strongest guide during this Saturn retrograde journey. Here is one of my favorite descriptions of Saturn. “He targets our fears and insecurities, challenging us to let them go and move on. If we can be strong and look into the heart of our darkness, we will find nothing there to fear. Saturn is the kindly father/teacher who releases us from our self-imposed prisons into a new light and with room to grow.” (Catie Stewart in The Mountain Astrologer issue Oct/Nov 2012).
Here in Ontario and other parts of eastern North America we are experiencing a spring storm, snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain. Our front lawn looks like a skating rink. A perfect metaphor for Saturn turning retrograde. The only thing to do is ride out the storm until the Sun shines again.
