Crossing Boundaries and Thresholds

spiritual_doorway

There’s something very magical about crossing any boundary, and we do it every day in multiple ways without ever noticing. Every time you enter a building, drive out of county or state, visit a park, watch a movie, open a book, change task, or click on a website, you’re crossing a boundary and entering different territory. These frequent thresholds offer the best possible opportunity to explore energy, and to notice the slightest of shifts in frequency and vibration.

As children we have an innocent inner sense about thresholds. I think we’ve probably all played that game where you have to avoid stepping on the cracks or lines on the pavement (the cracks are in between spaces, neither here nor there, and therefore mysterious and possibly dangerous)! We can all remember the neigbourhood spooky or haunted house that you usually avoided, unless you were brave enough to take up the challenge of a dare. Think of the wall in Neil Gaiman’s fabulous tale “Stardust”, or any number of boundaries in myths and fairy tales, such as entering the forest, leaving the castle or kingdom, crossing the river……

I visited Canada as a teenager, and on one day our trip took us across the border with the USA, involving a stop to have our passports checked. I remember getting out of the minibus and literally standing on the Canada side of the line, and then taking one step over into the States, to see if it felt any different. This was way before I became aware of working with energy in any directed way, but somehow I knew the importance of it.

You can learn so much about yourself, and about what and where serves your highest good and soul purpose, if you can learn to notice these transitions throughout your day. It doesn’t have to be a complicated or lengthy process and it can enhance your awareness and your life. I recommend this simple practice, whenever you cross a threshold in your day:

  1. Stop, and take a deep breath.
  2. Acknowledge the fact that you have left one space and entered another.
  3. Briefly check in with your body, mind and emotions to notice any shifts or changes within you.

If we do this routinely, it becomes clear immediately when our personal equilibrium has been disturbed, and it’s far easier to get to why that has happened right there, in the moment. If we rush from one thing and place to another without ever taking the time to notice, by the end of the day we can be feeling any number of positive or negative sensations caused by any number of places, people or experiences.

I believe that by noticing the small changes we adjust to in our daily lives, we gain the ability to face the major ones with less fear and uncertainty. Because we’re practiced at tuning in, at being aware when there is nothing pressing or immediate to be fearful of, we can calmly apply that same process when we’re going to (or are forced to) cross a threshold that will have a huge impact on our future. We’re also able to discern when we’ve crossed a threshold that may not be visibly obvious, such as sensing the presence of a spiritual vortex, a portal or a power spot, or moving into an altered state of consciousness.

Once we know exactly where, when and how our energy is affected we are equipped to make more empowering choices for our lives – where we want to live and work, who we want to spend time with and into what we wish to invest our energy. And for me, this simple practice helps to sprinkle more magic dust over the practicality of everyday life – as you know, I’m always in favour of that!

“Boundaries may seem to divide up what which is undivided and whole, but it is through such division that a deeper, more integrated whole is created…. Boundaries make freedom possible by clarifying what must be worked with, not just personally and transpersonally, but also interpersonally.” Robert Augustus Masters
