50 Do's and Don'ts That Can Make You Happy
- Details
Raj Rishi
It is true that most people are born with certain genetic traits which make them temperamentally happy or sad. Some people, for example, are introverts, pessimistic and sad by nature while others are extroverts, optimistic and happy.
Moreover, everybody’s idea of happiness depends on their circumstances, past experiences, thoughts, convictions, mental and physical states, health etc.
Nonetheless even inherited traits of nature can be changed if a person makes a dedicated and sustained effort.
Here is a list of 50 dos and don’ts that should either be conscientiously eliminated or cultivated depending upon their nature.
Things or traits of nature that make people unhappy and should be assiduously eliminated:
- Fear of what people think about you
- Fear of the unknown.
- Fear of death especially in those who are old and seriously ill
- Fear of failure
- Inferiority complex and its natural corollary lack of confidence
- Lack of clarity about your life’s goals and the resultant loss of conviction about how to achieve them
- Having unachievable ambitions or over-expectations
- Always feeling jealous of the people who you think are better off than you. But remember that even the most blessed looking people have dark and painful corners which they hide from the people or keep contending with privately. So don’t feel jealous of them
- Always looking at the negative points of others
- Over-attachment with people especially those you love resulting in the fear of losing them
- Regretting unhappy past mistakes
- Not being able to forgive people
- Lack of physical exercise may make you sick and unhappy
- Not enjoying the little blessings of life
- Thinking of others’ spouses to be more beautiful than your own
- Always cribbing about what you do not have and others have in ample measure such as wealth, cars, houses, etc.
- Thinking other people to be more intelligent and fortunate than you.
- Living under the fear of social taboos
- Not having a good sex life
- Not living in the present
- Wrong choice of careers/professions
- Telling lies and living under the fear of being caught
- Lack of contentment
- Lack of gratitude
- Not counting the blessings
The above mentioned points not only mention what you should not do, they also, by implication, suggest what you should do to be happy. Here is list of some more habits that you should consciously cultivate in order to be happy.
- Be thick skinned against unjust criticism. You can’t quarrel with everyone who criticises you.
- Don’t try to please all the people all the time
- Perform a light exercise-- yoga, pranayama daily
- Take light, simple and nutritive diet—you can, sometimes, also eat what you like but within limits. Don’t altogether deprive your taste buds of the good things of life.
- Have no expectations from those you love
- Have a good sleep at night
- Have a list of powerful and inspiring quotes that are particularly relevant to your nature
- Do you keep brooding because you have been bullied by someone stronger than you? You are not alone. Even your bully may have been bullied by a greater bully. Remember the song: Everybody’s somebody’s fool, everybody’s somebody’s plaything
- Be realistically positive and hopeful- there is a limit beyond which neither Fate nor God is going to favour you
- Accept life as it comes
- Don’t be dependent on others for your happiness
- Try to live within your means/limits
- Keep moving with life
- Don’t run after the strictly forbidden and unreachable fruit
- Cultivate optimism and zest for life
- Avoid slothfulness—take regular shower, wear neat clothes, maintain yourself reasonably, use good perfumes as they are known to lift the mood
- Keep yourself busy with creative and physical activities that will not only give you happiness and satisfaction but may also tire you and give good sleep
- Do some selfless service and earn blessings
- Drink lots of water. It will wash the toxins out of your system
- Cultivate the habit of letting go off
- Think of the less fortunate people than you whenever you tend to look at your inadequacies
- Keep company of the good, happy and humorous people; read inspiring books; watch comedies on television programs; listen uplifting music
- Don’t look beyond your partner for sexual gratification
- Regularly chant some positive affirmations to be happy
