12 Reasons to Forgive the Person Who Hurt You the Most

This time of year chances are your personal relationships are getting a little more attention than usual. During the holidays, we often spend more time with friends and family, attending holiday parties, visiting other people’s homes and taking time away from work.

Sometimes, this shared time can be lovely.  Other times, we feel forced to spend quality time with people who have hurt us.  For others still, our broken relationships keep us from spending any time together whatsoever, and we feel sad, lonely or angry because of it. At a time of year dedicated to spending time with loved ones, we often are reminded more fully of the relationships that hurt the most.

So, in the spirit of the holidays, I encourage you to consider forgiving someone who has hurt you.  This isn’t to give the other person a free pass, but rather to help you feel better and move on from whatever relationship trauma has been haunting you.

Forgiveness is often easier said than done, so with this in mind, here are a few reasons to forgive the person who has hurt you the most. I hope these reasons help you find resolution to any broken relationships in your life this holiday season.

Reasons to Forgive

  1. We all make mistakes, and we’ve all done things that have hurt other people.
  2. Holding on to anger is painful, and makes your life much sadder and less fulfilling.
  3. Withholding forgiveness often creates more drama in your personal life.
  4. Chances are you would like to be forgiven for your own mistakes.
  5. Staying angry keeps you stuck in the past, and means you keep reliving the painful event again and again in your mind.
  6. When we focus on what we don’t like about someone, we attract more of those same qualities though the Law of Attraction.
  7. When we forgive others, we attract forgiveness to ourselves through the Law of Attraction.
  8. Chances are, you’d rather be known as someone who forgives and forgets rather than as someone who holds grudges.
  9. You can’t move on to the good things in life when you are focused on the bad ones.
  10. All people have good in them; they aren’t all bad or all good. Especially if you loved this person at some point in time, he or she must have at least a few redeeming qualities.
  11. We would all appreciate a little more harmony and peace in our lives.
  12. At the end of the day, we are each responsible for our own happiness.  Other people weren’t put on the planet to make us happy.  We can choose to focus on the positive, regardless of the actions of others.

I hope you enjoy the holidays this year, and that you find peace in your homes, with your friends and in all of your relationships.  You deserve to be happy, no matter what anyone has done to you in the past.
