Frustrated with failures? - Here’s how to derive strength from failures and move towards success
- Details
Some people are so deeply frustrated and demoralized by recurring failures that they give up all hope of success in their life. They withdraw into some dark, secluded corner of their house so that nobody can see them or talk to them; so that they can ruminate over their misfortune peacefully, undisturbed.
Brooding constantly over failures only fills the mind with pain, remorse and depression. This is, in fact, a masochistic attitude which may further hurt their chances of bringing the life on track once again.
Let’s first understand that successes and failures are like light and shadow which do not remain constant; they keep changing. The problem is that when we are in hard times, they appear to stand-still, not moving or changing for the better at all. The reason for this is that we become very impatient for the change.
We must keep moving and working for the betterment of our situation. This can happen only if we do not allow our fears and our disappointments to lead us into depression and inaction.
Experiences from failures are harsh task masters and harsher they are, the wiser they make us. The only thing is, as Abraham Lincoln said, that we should not remain content with failure. We can transform failure into success, if only we try to learn from it.
So, don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t waste energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge.
It’s ok to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing. Failures provide us an opportunity to begin again and act more realistically, wisely and cautiously than before. They tell us what mistakes we have made and which right acts will bring us closer to success.
If there are no failures, we cannot fully enjoy and appreciate success. They are a spice of life; they enhance its taste. Sometimes, I think that the pain of failure is more a matter of our ego. We think that people will hold us in poor opinion. We take it a challenge to our false sense of self-respect.
Then, there are people who think that they are the only ones who have been the victims of failures and misfortunes. If we step out of ourselves, we will find that that almost every successful person has not just one, but a series of disastrous failures behind them.
When you are under the stress of failure, just think of the previous failures. Do you feel their pain the way you did when they occurred? Perhaps in retrospect you think it was foolish of you to have felt this or that kind of pain.
Six months from now you will feel the same about your present failure as well. The present failure will also pass like the previous failure.
Remember, failures often become the reason for success. They are a feedback on our past mistakes. They give us an opportunity to try new and bold ideas.
Failure, therefore, is not an occasion to cry, lament and ruminate. It is the time to take stock of the gamut of events and situations that brought it on us and try to learn from them.
“I’ve come to believe that all my past failures and frustrations were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy.” - Tony Robbins
Now that failure has occurred, it has actually lapsed into an event of the past. The best course, therefore, is to close the door on the past. What is required is that you should not forget your mistakes so that you don't forget the lessons learnt from them. And also you should not dwell upon them-constantly brood over them or allow them to sap your energy, time or space.
Let your failure be “a learning experience, a rung on the ladder, a plateau at which to get your thoughts in order and prepare to try again.”
“You must make a decision that you are going to move on. It wont happen automatically. You will have to rise up and say, ‘I don’t care how hard this is, I don’t care how disappointed I am, I’m not going to let this get the best of me. I’m moving on with my life.” ― Joel Osteen, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential
Let’s have a look at how successful men have learnt and benefited from mistakes and have made them reasons for their success.
“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” - Michael Jordan
“I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”-Thomas Edison
“Our greatest glory is in never failing, but in rising every time we fail.” - Confucius
“Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of a greater or equal benefit.” - Napoleon Hill
“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” –Maya Angelou
Finally, here is a small mantra or an affirmation for success.
Today I choose to release everything
That has tried to hold me back
I release the past; I release bitterness
I release failure and missed opportunities
Today I choose to boldly move towards joy and success
