Overcoming Motivation Killers
Michelle Maros
As we make our way to the end of the first month of 2014, we can experience a variety of emotions. We’ve set goals and intentions, created hope and positivity for all that is to come, and feel motivated to be our very best. We’ve set the bar high for ourselves and we look forward to reaching these high standards and ideals. Often times we come across motivation zappers that can shift us off of our course of personal growth and positive living. This week, we’ll delve into some common positivity vacuums and the steps you can take to manage them now, and throughout the rest of your year.
- Self doubt. Entertaining negative thought patterns can lead to self-doubt and lack of confidence in yourself and your life. “Can I really lose this weight?” “Will I really get this promotion?” Once we get in a positive, healthy place, our egos love to come in and make us believe that we aren’t good enough and that we can’t accomplish these goals. When this self-doubt begins to arise, gently bring your mind back to the present and replace it with a loving thought. Choose an affirmation that can help you switch from negative to positive, and try to keep your confidence high, knowing that you are fully capable of what you set your mind to.
- Complacency. After the momentum of New Year’s desires begins to slow down, it’s common for us to allow our goals to go to the wayside as more important things begin to arise. We start to think that these desires and ideals don’t matter or aren’t important. If you’re feeling this way, remember the feelings of why you set these goals to begin with. Maybe they no longer apply, but start to understand why you wanted to create these shifts. Find small actions to take and remember to have patience with yourself.
- Lack of faith. We can get down on ourselves because we think nothing will ever work out the way it should. This one especially rings true with me. I’ve felt so many times that no matter what I do, my goals won’t be achieved. This is certainly not that positive mentality we are striving for! Believing that you can attain all that you’re searching for is half the battle. Have trust and faith that when you set out to do something, you have all the power to make that happen.
- Outside pressures and responsibilities. We live in a busy, fast paced world. Life’s responsibilities can get in the way of our own personal ideals and wishes. While it is important to keep on top of your professional duties, find time in your schedule to make time for you. You are a priority! Allow your schedule to reflect this self-loving attitude.
How do you motivate yourself to keep on track? What are some of your triggers that can sway you from your goals and resolutions? Let us know!
