As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.
The Overview for August
This year the month of August finds us with Uranus stationary retrograde and Mercury and Mars both slowing to go retrograde in September and October respectively.
Remember that the Mars/Jupiter conjunction in Aries in late May set a new 2 year cycle into motion and continues to work its magic wherever we have 4 Aries. With Jupiter now retrograde, we’ll get a review of our Aries initiatives over the next several weeks, maintaining the momentum and giving us glimpses of the major growth to come early next year when Jupiter re-enters Aries and conjuncts Chiron.
August continues the transit of inner planets through signs outside the outer planet span between late Capricorn and mid-Taurus. This month we have a lot of planetary action in Taurus and Leo, so expect those areas of your chart to be highly active! This renews the inspiration and begins the natural expression of the Wisdom Teaching which began in May and was spread globally in June.
As I offered last month, this year’s Wisdom theme involves us seeing a more ideal role we want to play and clearly visualizing our heart’s desire so it can come forth on “the balcony of life and mind,” expressed with efficiency and adaptability. Because the recent Lunar eclipse was long and strong its effects were set into play on May 15 for 5 months and 10 days, with extreme intensity between mid-June and late September. The lesson is to see whatever leaves or arrives as an answer to strengthening your ability to live your heart’s desire.
Saturn is still teaching us how to manage our feelings and our individual spirituality to play our part in the greater Aquarian 20 year era now developing. This month Saturn continues to crystallize what we need to learn about the second half of Aquarius, with the theme of “Management.” Due to Saturn’s recent stations, over the next few months we’ll be tested to be able to “pick up and deliver spiritual power,” however that applies in our lives.
This month will bring many realizations and things coming to surface via the numerous oppositions, squares, and quincunxes, with “expansion through sacrifice” in the air with imbalances leading to power if we find the right “counterweight” in the situation. Allow spontaneity to come forth while continuing to clean out the musty corners of the mind. If you feel discontent, clean out the perception and find a more heart-felt view of things.
Planets Slowing Down, Speeding Up, or Shifting Signs
This month is very active, with Uranus going retrograde and Mercury and Mars slowing to go retrograde in the near future. At this point, we have Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto all retrograde with Uranus joining the club, showing us that the entire spiritual field is in a review and return mode, giving us a new look at lessons related to these planets in the life areas they’re transiting.
In August we have several planets changing signs. This month Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, will give us three sign experiences (Leo, Virgo, and Libra), and the Sun, ruler of Leo and Cancer, will give us two (Leo and Virgo). Venus, ruler of Taurus/Libra, will also give us two (Cancer and Leo), and Mars, ruler of Aries and Scorpio, will also give us two (Taurus and Gemini.) As you can see, we still have a lot of activity going on in Taurus, Leo, and Virgo this month.
Mars begins August exactly conjunct Uranus and the North Node, facilitating inventions, innovations, unexpected or revolutionary change, and growth-oriented developments. Mars in Taurus is a “steady as it goes” type of energy, even if it’s in the sign said to be its “exile,” since it’s in opposition to its home in Scorpio. The bump in the road is the Mars square Saturn in play the first 12 days of August. Also in play from August 7 through August 20 is Mars trine Pluto, giving us the ability to get to the heart of any matter extraordinarily quickly and efficiently.
Then, on August 20, Mars enters Gemini and we begin to experience its square from the Sun through September 2. As this is the sign where Mars will go retrograde in late October, our long term Mars in Gemini lessons begin! Mars is activating the house(s) where we have the second half of Taurus and the first 7 degrees of Gemini, so stay focused, enjoy yourself as much as you can in the midst of the cross currents, and especially during the hard aspects, continue to maintain patience, thoughtfulness, and caution while curbing impulsiveness and avoiding all quarrels where things quickly bog down.
From August 1-4, Mars is in the Virgo decan of Taurus, ruled by Mercury with an extra dose of the Moon. From August 4-20, Mars is in the Capricorn decan of Taurus, ruled by Saturn with an extra dose of Saturn. From August 20-31, Mars is in the Gemini decan of Gemini, ruled by Mercury with an extra dose of Jupiter. So the first part of the month is tense, the second part of the month is efficient and penetrating, and the third part of the month is tense with maximum cross currents.
Between August 1-4, Mars will prove agitating to those with planets between 18-21 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, and between August 4-20 it will agitate planets or points we have between 21-30 degrees of those signs. From August 20-31 it will agitate planets or points we have between 1-8 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.
The main aspects made to Mars or which Mars makes in August begins with its conjunction with Uranus followed by its sextile from Venus. Mercury makes an important biseptile to Mars between August 4-8, a serendipitous tredecile between August 11-15, with a forming trine from August 21 up to when it goes retrograde the second week of September.
Venus begins to make a quintile to Mars in mid-month, building to exact August 20-26. Mars is novile Jupiter at the beginning of the month, semisquare by the second week, septile by mid-month, and sextile the last 10 days of August. Mars is square Saturn the first 10 days of August, and biseptile the last week of the month. Mars is favorable to Neptune and Pluto the entire month.
As I’ve offered before, when Mars is within a degree of forming or separating while making a hard aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force. Hard aspects to/from Mars always require that we moderate or antidote impulsiveness and impatience.
This month the sign focus is on signs opposing the outer planet occupied zone. As noted earlier, we have a lot of Taurus and Leo giving way to Leo and Virgo by the end of the month. The transits opposed Saturn will show us realizations about the emerging Aquarian era, and the oppositions from Venus to Pluto and Mercury to Neptune will complete this year’s Pluto revelations and open this year’s Neptune revelations. All oppositions help us to focus energy, and the oppositions to Pluto, Saturn, and Neptune bring realizations about how to use those important transpersonal energies skillfully.
So August brings lots of sign changes! The first four days are heavy Leo and Taurus, which then shifts into the initial Virgo experience this year. By mid-month Venus leaves Cancer and enters Leo, boosting Leo. By the 20th, Taurus is decreased, then the Sun decreases Leo and boosts Virgo just as Mercury leaves Virgo and enters Libra. That means we have a constantly shifting sign emphasis this month which will be very spread out by the end of August, with one planet each in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, and Libra.
The Aquarius-Taurus Tension This Year
We’ve now re-entered the Storm Zone of Saturn square Uranus! Last year we were all put through a lot of pressure wherever we had 11-17 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Now the pressure’s back on in August wherever we have 18-24 degrees of those signs. Saturn and Uranus will remain in square through early December, again challenging us to see what matters so we can let go of nonessentials.
Last year we had three squares from Saturn to Uranus; one from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus, another with Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus at 14 Taurus, and a third with Saturn direct at 12 Aquarius and Uranus retrograde at 12 Taurus. These waning (upper) squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus mark the culmination of the cycle set into motion with Saturn conjunct Uranus in 1988. Interestingly, in 1999-2000 Saturn in Taurus made its waxing (lower) square to Uranus in Aquarius, so last year activated conflicts dating back 20 years.
We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set
The Grand Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius began a new 20 year Aquarian Era in December 2020, as well as a new 200 year Era, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. We’ve begun to grow beyond the materialism of the past 200 years and have entered two centuries of Air emphasis, with its qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.
The 2020 Solar eclipse on the Summer Solstice is still facilitating a grand reorientation in our lives, including an acceptance of new allegiances and life directions, and the December 2020 Solar eclipse at 24 Sagittarius is still helping us remove blocks to our happiness. The June 2021 Solar eclipse at 20 Gemini is already removing irrelevant and extraneous ideas and considerations from our decision making process, and the extremely beneficial Total Solar Eclipse at 13 Sagittarius in early December 2021 gave us a promise of major gifts and unique interactive opportunities which will be perfect for whatever we need. Rewards are coming these next 4 years!
We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 and 13 Sagittarius, 20 Gemini and 11 Taurus, since 1 Cancer aligns us with a larger reality, 24 Sagittarius helps us find happiness, 13 Sagittarius gives us a new identity and love, 20 Gemini removes what cannot be assimilated or communicated, and 11 Taurus will help us remove “weeds from our garden of Life and Mind.” All in all, these were some very favorable eclipses wherever they impact our lives.
The mid-June 2021 Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini continues to shut down parts of our lives in that sector for years to come. All the eclipses in Gemini and Sagittarius are removing old ideas, old perspectives, old truths, and old futures. May’s eclipses with Sun in Taurus has begun to shut down old value systems in that sector, as well as the Scorpio sector now that the May Full Moon Wesak Festival eclipse has begun to bring us a global wisdom mentioned earlier related to where late Scorpio and late Taurus fall in our charts.
As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.
The Grand Irrationality
In August, the 7-pointed “Star of Destiny" I’ve termed The Grand Irrationality is in play during the entire month due to Mars conjunct Uranus and septile Neptune, as well as transits through late Leo and early Virgo which form triseptiles with Neptune and Pluto and biseptile Uranus. Expect August to be another time of more choices and changes as the world navigates a very irrational period!
All of the septile-series 7th harmonic aspects from the inner planets to the outer spiritual planets represent turning points at the hard edge of revolutionary change we’ve been going through for a while. Obviously, this is activated every time the Moon moves through one of the seven “hot zones” of this evolutionary configuration. All septile-series aspects are irrational points representing “forks in the road of destiny” in any larger cycle. If you have a planet or point near any of the seven zones, your life is sure to be affected. In August these zones are around 3-7 Aquarius, 24-28 Pisces, 16-20 Taurus, 7-11 Cancer, 28 Leo- 2 Virgo, 20-24 Libra, and 12-16 Sagittarius.
During the periods these 7th harmonic aspects are in play, if things get weird or crazy, be clear about the choices you’re making. While a lot won’t “make sense,” it doesn’t have to; just be clear about what you’re doing and why. Even though there may be interactions with unreasonable or irrational people, we still have the power to respond in productive ways.
As with “hard” aspects to and from Mars, if that planet (or really any planet) is involved in any non-rational aspect, whether one to our natal Mars or transiting Mars making a non-rational aspect to one of our natal, progressed, or solar return planets, it’s a time to be cautious during the period when the aspect is within a degree of forming or separating. Things have a way of getting strange during 7th harmonic aspects, so those are times to be especially deliberate and thoughtful in choosing our responses.
Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month
August begins under the influence of the late July New Moon at 6 Leo, putting the spotlight on that house in our charts. As this New Moon is on a degree of “confrontations between differing views or values,” along with Jupiter going retrograde just hours after that Lunation with Mercury square Uranus, allow your genius or unique view to come forth this month, as this can help bring clarity and enjoyment to the larger Aquarian role you’re playing.
The first week begins with Mars conjunct Uranus, and ends with Mars square Saturn! Consider the entire week to be emblematic of the square’s challenges to move toward our uniqueness and individuality, putting the brakes on conflicts, rules, restrictions, and assumptions we never agreed to. This is a week not to get deflected by things we don’t need to mess with; just refuse to take unnecessary chances and play it safe. If you’re out on a limb, stop and crawl back down to safe and secure ground. With Venus quincunx Saturn on August 5 and the Moon in Scorpio T-square, show heart, show courage, and let go of whatever you need to.
The first week also features Mercury quincunx Neptune and Pluto the first two days of the month, showing expansion through sacrifice wherever we’re being squeezed in our late Leo sector. This should bring us “news and views” as well as messages from “the Guide of Souls” about what we can expect when the Sun also makes the same quincunxes on August 17-19.
The best thing going in the first week is Venus sextile Mars and Uranus, which should bring tremendous productivity which can be released through the square to Saturn. So build through Taurus/Cancer and release through Taurus/Aquarius. This will yield tremendous spiritual power which we’ll learn more about when the Sun squares Uranus and opposes Saturn during the second week.
The second week of August brings Sun trine Chiron, Venus opposed Pluto, picking up on its trine to Neptune on August 7 generating a tremendous amount of productive energy in the house where we have late Virgo. That week the Moon transits between Sagittarius and Aries, putting it inside the outer planet occupied span as it makes oppositions to the inner planets.
Mercury quincunxes Jupiter on August 9, after which we enter a very intense time of Sun square Uranus, Venus entering Leo, and a major fixed T-square of Moon and Saturn in Aquarius square Uranus and opposed the Sun on the Full Moon of August 11 at 20 Aquarius/Leo! You can bet the two weeks after that will be intense, frictional, integrative, and the threshold of the unknown. Be willing to part the veil, let go of fear, egocentricity, selfishness, and excessively intense desires, and move into the unknown using Mars sextile Neptune as your guide through the fog. We end the second week with Sun opposed Saturn, Mercury quincunx Chiron, and Mars trine Pluto, assisting us all to let go of lesser things when greater things are to be accepted. Efficiency is sky high that second week, so make the most of it!
As a result of the Mars conjunctions with Saturn and Neptune in April and May, we are in the midst of long term cycles wherever we have 23 Aquarius and 25 Pisces, so take note, since besides these 2 year pulses, we now have 4 Aries activated as a result of the conjunction of Mars and Jupiter at the end of May. All of these will reveal their potential each time the Moon transits late Aquarius, late Pisces, and early Aries.
Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month
The last half of the month is under the influence of the Full Moon at 20 Leo/Aquarius, promising a greater connection with Source expressed as a gift from Spirit rewarding us for our courage and willingness to rise to some occasion. This will help focus many Jupiterian promises from 2021 to be crystallized by Saturn in September in a preliminary form, and in November in a more permanent form.
As the Full Moon shows Mars sextile Neptune and trine Pluto, it will be a beneficial time for any planets or points we have in late Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. We should be able to understand many things on subtle levels, and know how to focus our heart’s intention to see it manifest in our lives. Just be efficient and adaptable, pay attention to details, and follow through.
The third week of the month be innovative while adjusting and being alert for interactive choices and changes which may not make sense, but which can provide a creative and/or playful focus to your Leo affairs. The entire week has the Sun making quincunxes and triseptiles to Neptune and Pluto, triggering the Grand Irrationality.
The good aspects of that week begin on the 16th with Mercury trine Uranus, favoring creative reorganizations which make things more efficient, followed by Venus trine Jupiter on August 18, bringing an inspired feel to all our relationships that entire week! The third week ends with Mars entering Gemini and Mercury opposed Neptune, showing we may need to adapt our methods while being clear about the roles we are playing and the roles we’re refusing to play. If you get mixed signals during that time, keep it simple and get to the heart of the matter easily using Mercury trine Pluto.
The fourth week of August begins with the Moon in Cancer, the Sun entering Virgo, Mercury trine Pluto, and Uranus going stationary retrograde on August 24! That day also shows Venus trine Chiron, opening up new healing and mentoring wherever we have the middle degrees of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
Mercury enters Libra on August 25, beginning to slow to go stationary retrograde soon after that. As it’s an old Moon that week, seek to bring things to completion and prepare for new initiatives after the New Moon at 5 Virgo on August 27. Remember throughout the month that the Moon in Fire and Air signs will be harmonious with any transits by the Sun, Mercury, and Venus in those signs, and the Moon in Earth and Water signs will be harmonious with the inner planets in those signs, as well as with Mars, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
A zone of maximum volatility requiring extreme caution is the period between August 25-28, because of the Lunar T-square on the 25 followed by the Lunar Yod, Venus square Uranus, and Sun square Mars all happening on August 26! As the Sun will begin to be in tight orb of the square by August 23 and it’ll be in maximum friction from then through September 3, be very careful, slow down, try not to get stressed by the generic conflict, and try to express good Sagittarius and Pisces energies.
The end of the month brings the New Moon in Virgo square Mars, Venus opposed Saturn, the Sun quincunx Jupiter, Venus quincunx Neptune, linked with Mars sextile Jupiter and Venus quincunx Pluto on September 1. So this year Mercury made the first set of quincunxes and triseptiles with Neptune and Pluto, followed by the Sun, and completed by Venus. A lot will have been sacrificed and many important collective decisions will have been made by the end of August!
This is the seventh month of the North Node in Taurus era! We’re now done with our time of evolving in the sign of learning and communicating, and are now in a time of our greatest development coming through the sign of appreciation, value, and enjoying the best life has to offer.
Mars conjunct Jupiter in Aries in late May set the pace for new openings these next 2 years, so embrace the adventure in new actions and new freedom to be as authentic as you need to be. This month our wise friend Saturn continues to help us manage Aquarius energies in our lives, with the first half of August teaching us how to initiate a new training or self-discipline in order to “build an adequate concrete vehicle for cosmic power,” this being part of our larger training in utilizing spiritual power effectively. The second half of the month Saturn brings the lessons of showing gratitude and appreciation, as well as new opportunities to know ourselves and not take things so heavily.
We’re now in the home stretch of two years of non-stop friction between Saturn in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus. The square is active for many weeks to come, so keep eliminating all which is of no use in the future, keep building heart and focused spiritual expression, and remember your inner Spiritual Warrior can never be overcome. This will help us understand what matters and what doesn’t, so don’t worry if you have to say no to something or someone.
The tension from the square will be greatly relieved by January 2023. Given the friction between Aquarius and Taurus triggered these next 4 weeks by Mars transiting Taurus squaring Saturn activated into T-squares by the Leo transits and all the Lunar transits through the Fixed signs, stay focused on your larger ideals, and keep showing heart, taking heart, trusting the heart, strengthening the heart, and radiating the Love you ARE to your world, expressed through a conscious focus, concentration, and intention.
Our recent Aries initiatives will expand quickly in early 2023, with past and current Taurus experiences showing us how to keep it simple, pleasant, and steady. The current Cancer, Leo, and Virgo transits are bringing many spiritual factors to the surface, and the many “Tensions of Opposites” is helping us all come to a higher integrated view as we resolve the opposition energies into understanding and productivity. Just remember that recent Gemini transits gave us a “first look” at what we’ll be dealing with for many months to come during the Mars transit of Gemini. The first tests are between late August and mid-October, with things slowing down or even going into reverse after that thanks to Mars retrograde.
The Sun in Leo is a time to see the Light of a new release of heart energy to be expressed in practical forms in Virgo. Leo is where we see what we would rule, and Virgo shows us our need to serve if we would become the ruler of that realm. This helps us know what our heart is and is not into, and brings the emergent Aquarian ideal to the surface in dynamic interactions. This is a time to let your heart show itself, knowing there are sacrifices to be made and collective projects to be embraced. This year’s Aquarian energies are now beginning their climb to fulfillment this Autumn as prelude to the rapid developments to come in 2023. Because Jupiter is still in Aries, try to experience yourself as an individual unique spark of Light which is part of the greater infinite Light field.
As we’re now in the middle of the second year of a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned. Have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the Divine transfigured ideal of a more just truth and future. This month brings confrontations and blessings, sacrifices and openings, reviews and returns of truths. Cultivate your unique qualities, and be pulled into a more enjoyable future.
The 2022 Capricorn and Aquarius transits began a new chapter of utilizing forms of personal power in Capricorn to serve the emerging Aquarian ideal. A huge part of the past died earlier this year and a new expansive inspired energy came in via the Mars conjunction with Jupiter in Aries. This is the time to keep steady on our course, unimpeded by old mindsets and considerations.
Open to new allegiances, new ways of seeing and honoring beauty, and make adjustments in your trajectory at this turning of the seasons. We now have overcome old inertias, discovered ways to move events in various directions according to our understanding, and gotten a new dose of Wisdom involving the vision of our heart’s desire expressed in our efficient adaptation to events.
Our wisdom is taking shape through our power to attain freedom of movement despite limiting conditions. We are finding “spiritual linkage through emotional stress” and “the blessings which come after the end of old ways.” And because an eclipse has been removing all which would obstruct our happiness for the past 19 months, and the new global wisdom now spreading across our planet is filling that void, this is a time when we can find new forms of genuine happiness appropriate for who we are now.
We’ve ended many things and begun a new expression these past four months; the past is over and we all have begun our trek into a new world of new potential, new adventures, and new ways to enjoy being ourselves, doing our work of Destiny. Open to the abundance of the process of growth, since we are all on a rocket ship to the stars!
