An Astrological Overview of July 2021

An Astrological Overview of July 2021

As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.

The Overview for July

This year the month of July is part of a two-step “pulse” with August being the second step. In July, we have Mars and Venus coming together in Leo as heralds for what Mercury and the Sun will revisit in August, so use the Venus conjunction with Mars as a point of loving heart strength wherever you have 20 Leo, since you’ll find power and ideas to express that in August. When the rulers of our Aries, Taurus, Libra, and Scorpio sectors come together in heart-felt loving Leo, we’re in for a great ride in that part of the chart!

For the first time since March, we have no planets going stationary retrograde or direct this month! Saturn and Pluto are at maximum retrograde, showing our review in those areas deepens, while Jupiter and Neptune are rapidly slowing, having just gone retrograde in June. So the inner planets are all at maximum forward speed in July and August while the outer planets are all slow during the same time. This shows it’s a great time to get a lot done, moving everything forward in the Cancer and Leo sectors of our maps, while reflecting on our social-spiritual growth up to now.

The month begins with Mercury still in its shadow zone through July 7 when it begins its race toward the Superior Conjunction with the Sun on August 1. As we’ll still be under the influence of the recent Mercury retrograde until late September, keep in mind that July continues to show us how to adapt our view to shape our expression in precise ways, leading us to the power to use our vitality to build thought forms we want to manifest in the future.

Saturn is now moving deeper into its retrograde reflections after going stationary retrograde on a degree offering us techniques of direct accomplishment and an acceleration of our evolutionary potential once we have a vision, a plan, and a good time to execute the procedure. As Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, those parts of our chart are where we’re reflecting on past Saturn lessons and experiences and are offered a new understanding from different perspectives based in a holistic view.

May 2020 initiated a “graduation into a new realm of Being” for all of us. How we’ve responded since then was tested in May 2021, which brought us the first of three radical transformation periods this year. All three transfiguration periods this year hold the promise of great opportunities, vision, and understanding!

The second transit of Jupiter through “the Transfiguration Zone” at the end of Aquarius will happen in late July through the first half of August, helping us take a second look at the larger transfiguration process going on in our lives, and the third pass in December will finish the process of expansion to be vitalized between the middle of February and the middle of April 2022. For now, while Jupiter is still in Pisces, we’re getting an initial look at the front end of our 2022 adventure in endings and beginnings. (As noted last month, if you’re feeling a lot more these days, it’s entirely due to Jupiter in Pisces opening you to the collective atmosphere with all its archetypes and ghosts!)

Planets Slowing Down and Shifting Signs

So this month we have Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto retrograde, showing the spiritual field requires reflection, review, and going inward to re-examine our 2021 process of purification, connectedness, discipline, and sense of vision. All retrogrades represent a review, or a time when we get a different angle of understanding about what that planet brought us when direct.

An analogy for the direct to retrograde to direct process would be that the first direct movement through the Shadow Zone (the span of degrees between where a planet goes stationary retrograde and where it goes stationary direct) is when we “toss the stone into the pond.” The retrograde period is when the ripples, having hit the far edge of the pond, return to center. The third transit of the Shadow Zone happens after the retrograde, and indicates a time when we can be clear about how to use that planetary function effectively within the conditions we’re in. So right now we’re getting the “karmic returns” of Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto.

As Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, and Jupiter all change signs this month, it indicates that the rulers of 10 of our houses and signs will experience a distinctive change in those areas of our chart. Mercury will give us three sign experiences (Gemini, Cancer, Leo), Venus and Mars will give us two (Leo and Virgo), the Sun will give us two (Cancer and Leo), and Jupiter will give us two (Pisces and Aquarius). This is a lot of rulers shifting how they express their energies, so be ready to adapt!

Mars

Mars in Leo is very dynamic, inspired, creative, and ready to flame on! Mars is moving very fast at this time, and transits from 12 Leo to 1 Virgo this month. The Sun rules Leo, so Mars is ruled by the Sun almost the entire month. Because Mars’ nature is both Fiery and Watery (through its rulership of Aries and Scorpio), its transit of Leo accents its fiery side, so this month, “doing it in style” is favored.

Mars is particularly stressed at the beginning of July and the third week of the month. At the beginning of July Mars opposes Saturn and squares Uranus, creating a dynamic fixed T-square which throws a dynamic integrative void into 13-14 Scorpio. The void of a T indicates the problem and/or the solution to whatever is challenged during a T.

So the beginning of the month requires looking at the magnetism, and seeing what we may have to eliminate or regenerate something in that part of our chart, seeing the whole thing as an experiment which nears completion in an improvised lab. Outwit whoever or whatever needs outwitting, and initiate or maintain lines of communication, even with those who prove challenging to talk to.

As I gave you last month, when Mars is within a degree forming or separating from making an aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force, with an eye to moderating or antidoting impulsiveness and impatience. A Mars square is a clear signal to slow down, and if necessary, either turn a corner and/or put the brakes on something.

The challenges in the middle of the month involve Venus and Mars making four triseptiles and quincunxes with Neptune and Pluto, and two biseptiles to Uranus in the latter part of July. The nature of the triseptile is cooperative, interactive, and nonrational, the biseptile externalizes some “destiny producing” element of personality, and the quincunx is an aspect of adjustment, and “expansion through sacrifice.” So whatever interesting twists and turns are promised by the biseptiles and triseptiles, we’ll need to make the adjustments accompanying the quincunxes just before and after the triseptiles.

Sign Focus

July is a month when the first half multi-sign influences are different than they are the second half. The first half of the month we have Gemini, Cancer, and Leo strong. The second half of the month Gemini leaves and Cancer strengthens, and then at the end of the month there’s a grand shuffle with Cancer disappearing and Leo and Virgo taking center stage.

Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac. It is the natural step where we take what we’ve learned about approaching life spontaneously on our own terms (Aries), and having embraced that which is new and enjoyable (Taurus) and turned it into a process of discovering new information, new understanding, new points of view, and new interactions (Gemini), and now secure it in ways which nurture us. Cancer is where we decide what to do to consolidate what we’ve attained.

The Aquarius-Taurus Tension This Year

In January and February, Jupiter transited the first half of Aquarius, heralding what will be crystallized by Saturn throughout 2021. What Jupiter opens, Saturn will structure as it rumbles through the first half of Aquarius this entire year. Jupiter’s transit of 17-24 Aquarius in March opened what Saturn will secure in 2022, and Jupiter’s transit of 25-29 Aquarius in April opened what Saturn will secure initially between May and July 2022, and fully crystallize in January, February, and early March 2023.

Because Saturn is now retrograde and Uranus has begun to slow down, the second square between Saturn and Uranus is now complete. This square shows the need to stay focused on what’s really pertinent while disregarding older or unimportant interference. As Saturn will be square Uranus all year, this friction will last through February 2022, and is heavily activated by transits in fixed signs!

In the first 8 days of July, Mars and then Venus transit Leo and create T-squares with Saturn and Uranus, with major friction promised by the Moon in Taurus on July 4 squaring Saturn, conjuncting Uranus, and squaring Mars! While Venus completes her square to Uranus on July 8, the Moon’s transit of mid-Leo on July 11-12 will reprise the T-square, this time with the accent on Leo rather than Taurus.

In early August, these T-squares repeat when Mercury and the Sun transit Leo, opposing Saturn and squaring Uranus. We’ll get a preview on July 31 when Moon in Taurus squares both Sun and Saturn before conjuncting Uranus, and an echo when Moon in Leo opposes Saturn on August 7 and squares Uranus just before the New Moon on August 8. Remember, the oppositions provide the awareness of what must be integrated, and the third planet making the square drives the integrative process via the void. In all these cases, the void in mid-Scorpio provides the integrative focus.

Obviously this puts pressure on planets or points we have between 11 and 15 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, as well as the last 5 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. The Fixed sign squares represent turning points and braking actions necessary for us to get our wisdom aligned with our understanding. These points of tension occur off and on the entire year as Saturn “makes real” all which Jupiter promised by its transit the last half of January and first half of February.

The first square in February was from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus; the second was in June, with Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus at 14 Taurus; the third happens just after the December Solstice with Saturn direct at 12 Aquarius and Uranus retrograde at 12 Taurus. These waning (upper) squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus mark the culmination of the cycle of these power planets which was set into motion when Saturn conjuncted Uranus in 1988. Interestingly, in 1999-2000 Saturn in Taurus made its waxing (lower) square to Uranus in Aquarius, so this year activates conflicts dating back 20 years.

We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set

2020 was momentous because it began a new 20 year Aquarian Era, launched as a long term wave form at the Grand Mutation last December. That Jupiter conjunction with Saturn also set a new 200 year Era into motion, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. That implies we’re moving out of the materialism of the past 200 years, and have entered two centuries of the qualities of Air, with the associated qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.

The 2020 Summer Solstice Solar Eclipse is still facilitating a grand reorientation in our lives, accepting new allegiances and life directions, and the December 2020 Solar Eclipse at 24 Sagittarius is still helping us remove blocks to our happiness. We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 Sagittarius, and 20 Gemini, since we’re aligning ourselves with a larger reality in the first, finding happiness in the second, and removing what cannot be assimilated or communicated in the third.

We also recently had a Total Lunar Eclipse in late May at 6 Sagittarius/Gemini affecting us all for 5 months, and mid-June brought the Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini, shutting down parts of our lives in that sector for 5 years to come. These eclipses are removing old ideas, old perspectives, old truths, and old futures, creating voids for new manifestations of these to come forth at the right time in our lives.

As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.

The Grand Irrationality

In July the 7-pointed “Star of Destiny" I’ve termed The Grand Irrationality is activated the second week of the month when Mercury first triseptiles Pluto on July 11, and then septiles Uranus and biseptiles Neptune on July 15. This is accompanied by Venus and Mars triseptile Pluto July 14-16 and then Venus triseptile Neptune and biseptile Uranus July 19-20, followed by Mars making the same aspects July 22-28. All of the constant 7th harmonic aspects to the outer spiritual planets represent the hard edge of revolutionary change we’ve been going through for a while, and it’s also activated every time a planet or the Moon moves through one of the seven “hot zones” of this evolutionary configuration.

All the septile-series aspects trigger crucial choices and changes at “forks in the road of destiny.” I have written extensively about “The Grand Irrationality” which has been active for many years at this site and why all of humanity is forging its future destiny at this time. If you have a planet or point near any of the seven zones, your life is sure to be affected. In June these zones are around 25-29 Capricorn, 17-21 Pisces, 9-13 Taurus, 30 Gemini-4 Cancer, 21-25 Leo, 12-16 Libra, and 4-8 Sagittarius.

If things seem irrational and don’t make much sense, there’s always a septile-series aspect in the mix. During the periods these 7th harmonic aspects are in play, if things get a little weird or crazy, just go slow and be clear about the choices you’re making. While a lot won’t “make sense,” it doesn’t have to; all we must do is be clear about what we’re doing and why. Even though it may bring interactions with unreasonable or irrational people, we still have the power to respond in productive ways.

Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month

July begins with Mars opposed Saturn and square Uranus while also trine Chiron. Right heart action brings healing and/or mentoring. Volatility continues on July 3 and 4 with the T just separating and Sun quincunx Saturn and square Chiron followed by its sextile with Uranus. So while the Sun and Uranus are stressed, they also are productively positioned with each other allowing each to express the positive through the friction.

The end of the first week shows Mercury making its final square to Neptune, showing our continued need for clarity about what roles we are and aren’t playing in life. The voids in Virgo and Sagittarius indicate we need precision and vision, order and imagination, without nitpicking, getting scattered, or believing all we’re told or even what we perceive. As we’ve now been through three squares between Mercury and Neptune, this is a long term re-evaluation related to whatever is happening in our Gemini sector relative to whatever began in our Pisces sector in March.

Because this square involves the sign of communications with the sign of confusion, try not to get frustrated if there’s a lack of clarity in discussions, and strive for precision even if someone is being obtuse. Note when there are exaggerations, deflections, wishful thinking, and/or an unrealistic expectations, and show good humor and humility in following through on details.

The end of the first week of July also shows Venus opposing Saturn and trining Chiron. If we handled the earlier Mars aspects favorably, we should derive benefit when Venus makes the same aspects. The second week of July brings us Mercury quincunx Pluto, Venus square Uranus, and the New Moon trine Neptune and opposed Pluto, favoring what will be put into play in August and September.

Just after the New Moon, Mercury enters Cancer and immediately trines Jupiter, favoring any planets we have in the first 4 degrees of Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces, as well as 13-16 Taurus and Virgo and 18-21 Sagittarius and Aries. We close out the first half of the month with Venus conjunct Mars at 20 Leo on July 13, and Sun trine Neptune, Chiron stationary retrograde at 13 Aries, and Venus quincunx Neptune on July 15.

Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month

As noted, the second half of the month has a different energy than the first half, even if the New Moon’s influence will extend through the last 3 weeks of July into the first week of August. Mid-month kicks off with Sun opposing Pluto with three powerful quincunxes: Venus quincunx Pluto, Mercury quincunx Saturn, and Mars quincunx Neptune. As I noted earlier, a quincunx creates a need to adjust within the context of “expansion through sacrifice,” even if the sacrifice involves letting go, “letting God,” demonstrating creative compassion, or just forgiving “the undead past” in order to generate productivity through what we give up.

The third week of July also brings Mercury square Chiron, Mercury sextile Uranus, and Venus entering Virgo, followed immediately in the fourth week by Venus opposed Jupiter, Mars quincunx Pluto, the Sun entering Leo and quincunxing Jupiter, and the Full Moon, promising clarity of vision and the ability to play “when the school is closed” expressed as a mobilization and liberation from adverse conditions. As the Moon is the same degree as Saturn’s 2020 retrograde station, you can bet the last half of July will bring echoes of the “Nature’s challenge” we all endured in 2020.

The Full Moon will also bring hard adjustments through the quincunx to Venus, though with Mercury trine Neptune the way should be clear. The oppositions of the Sun and then Mercury with Pluto coupled with the trine to Neptune shows the need for clarity about truth, the core of things, and the method to move everything forward by steps in a practical way.

The last week of the month shows a lot of planetary shifts, with Mercury entering Leo, Jupiter entering Aquarius, and Mars entering Virgo between July 27-29. Just before Mars enters Virgo it opposes Jupiter at 30 Aquarius, and is immediately followed by Venus quincunx Saturn on July 30. Whatever you’re doing, don’t overdo it! The month ends with the Superior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun on August 1, a “fusion of Mind and Life” opposed Saturn, generating a phenomenal potential for higher understanding of a great vision.

Evolutionary Development

This is the fifteenth month of the North Node in Gemini era, showing that our line of greatest evolutionary development is through seeing the many ways to learn and communicate a given thing, especially with an eye to assimilating diverse ideas from diverse sources. Themes this month focus on “newly opened lands offer the pioneer virgin fields of experience” and our ability to tame gravity, momentum, or our trajectory in an important way. The line of greatest growth is to open to new realms of discovery, especially in terms of our individuality and spiritual attitudes with an eye to how we can apply these to our social and/or emotional life.

Because we are in the thick of learning lessons associated with Saturn in Aquarius, keep showing patience as you lighten and brighten your life where you have Aquarius in your chart. As I’ve mentioned in past newsletters, this year we’re being tested to use the non-stop friction of the Taurus/Aquarius square to launch new visions, new models, new interactions, and new teamwork. We now cruise into the middle of the year, with Cancer, Leo, and Virgo energies making all kinds of aspects to the outer spiritual planets. We’re in a Summer of adaptation, adjustment, and getting clear as a prelude to the renewal of our spiritual quest, mutated by Spirit, in October.

Because of transiting Jupiter and Saturn, we’ve begun to catch glimpses of how to shortcut certain processes, whether our own evolution or to accelerate some work we’re doing. Jupiter just threw the doors open to new spiritual realms, and during its preliminary stay in Pisces we can experience a deeper and vaster connection with self, others, and life beyond anything we’ve experienced in the past decade. Keep open to ways you can make a greater contribution to your society or the world while understanding 2022 will bring us radical new experiences which will be very different than 2021.

We’re definitely in a new era, with productive openings and realignments happening. Use the tension of the squares from Aquarius to Taurus to honor your strength, courage, determination, focus, and ability to attract your heart’s desire by being clear about what you want and what you don’t. As Leo and Scorpio continue to be the solutions to any problems generated by the squares, show heart, take heart, trust the heart, strengthen the heart, and radiate the Love you ARE to your world. BE the power of your inner Spiritual Warrior who never fears and cannot be defeated.

While Cancer is about securing what nourishes our outreach in the world, Leo is about finding what we can put our hearts into. The group work continues to expand, so please keep in mind that we're all more aware, capable, and stronger together than we are separately. Use the Sun in Cancer to see the Light of how to secure what matters as you figure out what you do and do not care about. Who is your spiritual family? We’ve all “graduated into a new realm of Being,” with new openings to all who know they are a unique spark of Light within infinite fields of Light.

As we’ve launched into a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned, so have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the reorientation of Cancer, and the burst of heart power in Leo.
