As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.
The Overview for September
This year the month of September brings us the intensity of Saturn square Uranus and the late August New Moon square Mars!
This impacts the entire month, and with Mercury slowing and going retrograde in the second week of September, we will probably find ourselves moving one step forward, two to the side, two steps backward, two steps forward, and one to the side (or something like that!) Mercury will be helping us “return to Source” to find spiritual inspiration which will lead us to see how to make a long term positive difference by the time it goes stationary direct at the beginning of October.
With Jupiter retrograde this month and returning to its conjunction point with Mars at 4 Aries, we’re now reviewing and taking a new look at how we can enjoy life and find a two year expansion into new areas wherever we have 4 Aries. This was a magical conjunction, and will open doors for all of us in the house where we have early Aries. So we’ll continue a review of our Aries initiatives over the next several weeks, maintaining the momentum and giving us glimpses of the major growth to come early next year when Jupiter re-enters Aries and conjuncts Chiron.
September brings cross currents due to the squares and oppositions in play throughout the month, and with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto all retrograde, stay alert for “echoes of Spirit” as transpersonal energies continue to come forth which resemble past transformational experiences. With all these planets retrograde, the entire spiritual field is in a review and return mode, giving us a new look at lessons related to these planets in the life areas they’re transiting.
Saturn is still teaching us how to manage our feelings and our individual spirituality to play our part in the greater Aquarian 20 year era now developing. This month Saturn continues to crystallize what we need to learn about the second half of Aquarius, with the theme of “Management.” Due to Saturn’s recent station setting the theme for the period from June through next February, over the next few months we’ll be tested to be able to “pick up and deliver spiritual power,” however that applies in our lives. These tests will activate whenever transiting Saturn is triggered by an aspect with the trigger planet showing how to deal with those Saturn lessons. This month requires “strength” and “resilience” when we confront disappointing circumstances and people, with “rewards from Spirit” coming in the last half of September.
The inner planets are now at “the far side” of the outer planet span, bringing realizations related to the numerous cycles which began in June. And with so much Virgo action going on, the inner planets will require us to demonstrate good Sagittarius skills as they make their squares to Mars and oppositions to Neptune.
Planets Slowing Down, Speeding Up, or Shifting Signs
September is less active than usual when it comes to planets going retrograde or direct, as only Mercury goes retrograde. This changes in October as Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto all go direct and Mars goes retrograde. At this time, though still retrograde, Saturn and Pluto have begun to speed up while Uranus continues to slow down and Mercury slows and then speeds up again after the Inferior Conjunction at the Autumnal Equinox.
In September we only have three planets changing signs. This month Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, will give us two sign experiences (Virgo and Libra), and the Sun, ruler of Leo and Cancer, will give us two (Virgo and Libra). Venus, ruler of Taurus/Libra, will also give us two (Leo and Virgo). As you can see, there isn’t much sign shifting this month.
Mars begins September in a separating square with the Sun which is still in orb through September 3. Mars is now in Gemini at the beginning of a 7 month run in that sign. Mars in Gemini is versatile, but can get too spread out in “multi-tasking” mode. Because it is slowing to go retrograde in late October, please remember that much which is initiated at this time won’t move forward until January. Long term planning will sustain the faithful in the interim.
Mars is activating the house(s) where we have 7 through 20 Gemini, so stay focused, enjoy yourself as much as you can in the midst of the cross currents, and especially during the hard aspects, continue to maintain patience, thoughtfulness, and caution while curbing impulsiveness and avoiding all quarrels where things quickly bog down.
From September 1-7, Mars is in the Gemini decan of Gemini, ruled by Mercury with an extra dose of Jupiter. From September 8-30, Mars is in the Libra decan of Gemini, ruled by Venus with an extra dose of Mars. Because of the favorable aspects Mars makes to Jupiter this month, there is good productivity with specialization and unique qualities featured in the second half of September. Given the aspects, there will be some tension during Venus square Mars active from September 10-22 requiring us to make sure we’re using the right means to achieve our ends.
Between September 1-10, Mars will agitate those with planets between 7-12 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, and between September 10-20 it will agitate planets or points we have between 12-17 degrees of those signs. From September 20-30 it will agitate planets or points we have between 17-21 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.
The main aspects made to or from Mars in September begin with a square from the Sun and a trine from Mercury, helping resolve the Mercury opposition Jupiter into a very productive and harmonious evolutionary configuration. This creates a very favorable void in early Sagittarius. Mercury trine Mars lasts the first 10 days of September, giving us signs and signals of the next Mercury trine Mars which will happen in late October.
As noted, mid-September brings Venus in Virgo square Mars in Gemini, showing cross currents wherever we have the middle degrees of the Mutable signs. The best thing is that mid-month also begins a powerful stabilizing trine from Mars to Saturn, favoring planets and points we have around 17-23 Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
As I’ve offered before, when Mars is within a degree of forming or separating from a hard aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force. Hard aspects to/from Mars always require that we moderate or antidote impulsiveness and impatience.
This month the sign focus is on signs opposing the outer planet occupied zone. As noted earlier, we have Virgo planets opposing Neptune, and Libra planets opposing Jupiter. We’re done with the oppositions to Pluto and Saturn for the year except when the Moon is in late Cancer and late Leo. In fact, other than October’s oppositions to Jupiter, we won’t have any more oppositions to outer planets until November when the inner planets will all oppose Uranus.
So September is relatively quiet when it comes to sign changes. Leo disappears when Venus enters Virgo early in the month, but no other planet changes signs until the Equinox, when the Sun enters Libra and Mercury retrogrades back to Virgo. So this month puts the focus on Virgo and Libra, with the rest of the planets spread out in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini.
The Aquarius-Taurus Tension This Year
We are now back in the Storm Zone of Saturn square Uranus! Last year we were all put through a lot of pressure wherever we had 11-17 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. While we were granted some relief up to now, the pressure’s back wherever we have 18-24 degrees of those signs. Saturn and Uranus will remain in square through early December, again challenging us to see what matters so we can let go of nonessentials.
Last year we had three squares from Saturn to Uranus; one from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus, another with Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus at 14 Taurus, and a third with Saturn direct at 12 Aquarius and Uranus retrograde at 12 Taurus. These waning (upper) squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus mark the culmination of the cycle set into motion with Saturn conjunct Uranus in 1988. Interestingly, in 1999-2000 Saturn in Taurus made its waxing (lower) square to Uranus in Aquarius, so last year activated conflicts dating back 20 years.
We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set
The Grand Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius began a new 20 year Aquarian Era in December 2020, as well as a new 200 year Era, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. We’ve begun to grow beyond the materialism of the past 200 years and have entered two centuries of Air emphasis, with its qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.
The 2020 Solar eclipse on the Summer Solstice is still facilitating a grand reorientation in our lives, including an acceptance of new allegiances and life directions, and the December 2020 Solar eclipse at 24 Sagittarius is still helping us remove blocks to our happiness. The June 2021 Solar eclipse at 20 Gemini is already removing irrelevant and extraneous ideas and considerations from our decision making process, and the extremely beneficial Total Solar Eclipse at 13 Sagittarius in early December 2021 gave us a promise of major gifts and unique interactive opportunities which will be perfect for whatever we need. Rewards are coming these next 4 years!
We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 and 13 Sagittarius, 20 Gemini and 11 Taurus, since 1 Cancer aligns us with a larger reality, 24 Sagittarius helps us find happiness, 13 Sagittarius gives us a new identity and love, 20 Gemini removes what cannot be assimilated or communicated, and 11 Taurus will help us remove “weeds from our garden of Life and Mind.” All in all, these were some very favorable eclipses wherever they impact our lives.
The mid-June 2021 Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini continues to shut down parts of our lives in that sector for years to come. All the eclipses in Gemini and Sagittarius are removing old ideas, old perspectives, old truths, and old futures. May’s eclipses with Sun in Taurus has begun to shut down old value systems in that sector, as well as the Scorpio sector now that the May Full Moon Wesak Festival eclipse has begun to bring us a global wisdom mentioned earlier related to where late Scorpio and late Taurus fall in our charts.
As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.
The Grand Irrationality
In September, the 7-pointed “Star of Destiny" I’ve termed The Grand Irrationality is in play at the beginning of the month when Venus in late Leo and early Virgo biseptiles Uranus and triseptiles Neptune. Other than this “fork in the road of destiny,” the configuration won’t be activated by an inner planet until mid-October when transits around 19-23 Libra form triseptiles to Uranus and Neptune, creating a dynamic “Kite” pattern which will activate all 7 zones. So while September is relatively calm, October will bring lots of irrationality!
All of the septile-series 7th harmonic aspects from the inner planets to the outer spiritual planets represent turning points at the hard edge of revolutionary change we’ve been going through for a while. Obviously, this is activated every time the Moon moves through one of the seven “hot zones” of this evolutionary configuration. All septile-series aspects are irrational points representing “forks in the road of destiny” in any larger cycle. If you have a planet or point near any of the seven zones, your life is sure to be affected. In August these zones are around 2-6 Aquarius, 24-28 Pisces, 16-20 Taurus, 7-11 Cancer, 28 Leo- 2 Virgo, 20-24 Libra, and 11-15 Sagittarius.
During the periods these 7th harmonic aspects are in play, if things get weird or crazy, be clear about the choices you’re making. While a lot won’t “make sense,” it doesn’t have to; just be clear about what you’re doing and why. Even though there may be interactions with unreasonable or irrational people, we still have the power to respond in productive ways.
As with “hard” aspects to and from Mars, if that planet (or really any planet) is involved in any non-rational aspect, whether one to our natal Mars or transiting Mars making a non-rational aspect to one of our natal, progressed, or solar return planets, it’s a time to be cautious during the period when the aspect is within a degree of forming or separating. Things have a way of getting strange during 7th harmonic aspects, so those are times to be especially deliberate and thoughtful in choosing our responses.
Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month
September begins under the influence of the late August New Moon at 5 Virgo, putting the spotlight on that house in our charts. As that New Moon is on a degree of “imagination revealing new realms of Being,” coupled with its square to Mars, focus, concentrate, try not to get distracted, and show humor while playing your cards close to the vest when it’s time to end something or say goodbye. Open to the wisdom impacting your life since early June, and figure out which facets of your personality you can reveal to your world. The first half of the month has Mercury trine Mars, while the last half of the month has Mars trine Saturn, so the first half of September should prove very favorable for any planets we have in the early degrees of the Fire and Air signs.
The first week begins with the Sun square Mars and ends with Mercury going stationary retrograde at 9 Libra, giving us a look back at ways to reconnect with whatever we venerate in the way of “past Masters.” The first week also begins with Mars sextile Jupiter, and moves us through a Venus Yod to Pluto and Neptune with Mercury opposed Jupiter! So we have the opposition-sextile-trine I mentioned earlier, along with the “multiple expansion through sacrifice” energy of the Venus Yod.
If you’re trying to communicate something, squeeze out unnecessary considerations while opening a wider view through “seeing things through others’ eyes” to bring them to your understanding. And as Venus also makes triseptiles to Neptune and Pluto before and after the Yod, expect the usual “forks in the road of destiny” indicated by those 7th harmonic aspects.
The first week has the Moon in Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn, augmenting the empty signs leading to the outer planet occupied span. The Scorpio T-square with Saturn and Uranus tests our ability to show heart strength, while the Yod helps us focus on what and how to release powerful creative heart energies in productive ways. So Venus becomes what we need to integrate the power of the T-square.
The second week of September brings Sun quincunx Chiron, Venus quincunx Jupiter, Mercury going retrograde, Sun trine Uranus, and Sun quincunx Saturn. All quincunxes bring “forced adjustments” requiring some sort of sacrifice, so consider the second week a time to focus on essentials as we begin a new way of being educated through direct action. That week the Moon transits Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, and Taurus, activating the outer planets in that span.
As noted, the quincunxes in the second week involve forced adjustments, “expansion through sacrifice,” and a harmony between the Sun in Virgo and Uranus in Taurus, opening a very favorable void in mid-Capricorn. The Full Moon on September 10 ushers in two weeks of learning to take “inner guidance” and express it through revising some ideas back to source, or possibly finding ways to display what we know or can do in ways which bring us to the attention of the public. The Moon is very favorable on September 7, 10, 11, and 12, with Saturn square Uranus triggered on September 8 with Moon in Aquarius and September 14, with Moon in Taurus.
Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month
The last half of the month is under the influence of the Full Moon at 18 Virgo/Pisces, indicating a favorable time due to the Lunation sextile and trine Uranus, opening a very productive and harmonizing void around 16-20 Scorpio. Put your faith into action, and you’ll experience a surge of spontaneity and encouragement to “show your stuff.”
As the last half of September shows Mercury at minimum speed through the Inferior Conjunction, and then speeding up after that, use the third week of the month to get to the heart of any matter using the Sun opposed Neptune and trine Pluto to mobilize! That evolutionary configuration is great for becoming clear about the roles we are and aren’t play, with the favorable void in Cancer offering integrative possibilities. As Mars is trine Saturn the last half of the month, it’ll be good for stabilizing what we’ve accomplished while preparing for the slow down and reversals indicated by Mars going retrograde at the end of the month.
The third week of the month begins favorably, with the Moon in Taurus trine Venus and the Sun, followed by a sextile to Neptune and trine to Pluto. This Grand Earth trine on September 14/15 should be good for getting things done, and as it’s followed by Moon in Gemini on the 15, 16, and 17th in favorable aspect to Jupiter, Mercury, and then Saturn, we should be able to make progress despite the cross currents of Venus square Mars and the relative confusion accompanying Sun opposed Neptune which we can clear up using the Sun trine Pluto. Try not to let secondary distractions interrupt your focus, get clear about what roles you’re playing within the larger collective atmosphere, and remember that though things can get strange via the opposition they can quickly clear up due to Sun trine Pluto and Mars sextile Chiron.
September 16 shows cross currents created by Moon conjunct Mars and square Venus, while the Cardinal T-square on September 18 created by Moon in Cancer square Mercury opposed Jupiter throws the integrative void into early Capricorn. Seize the day, take responsibility, get mobilized, and you’ll easily overcome any conflicting energies in play. That week also has a very favorable Venus trine Uranus, bringing appreciation and value to the earlier trine made by the Sun to Uranus.
The week ends with Venus quincunx Saturn, showing us how to link energies with others to help them overcome difficulty through creating festivity and enjoyable events and circumstances. Because Saturn’s still retrograde and we’re reviewing prior Saturn experiences and challenges, the adjustments indicated by the quincunx are both a response to prior disappointments in human relations and a time to receive spiritual blessings as a preparation for moving forward in our Saturn-ruled affairs in October.
The fourth week of September begins with Moon in Leo favorable to Mars and Jupiter followed by a T-square to Saturn and Uranus throwing the integrative void into Scorpio, so eliminate to regenerate. That is immediately followed by the Inferior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury at 1 Libra, a transfiguration degree showing “a symbolic death leading to spiritual transformation.” As the Inferior Conjunction affects the period which follows up to the next Superior Conjunction at 17 Scorpio in early November, expect opportunities to enter into a greater spiritual reality from the Equinox through mid-November.
As Mercury immediately retrogrades back into Virgo after the Equinox, it renews the opposition to Neptune and trine to Pluto which was first in play in late August. Mercury opposed to Neptune shows we may need to adapt our methods while being clear about the roles we are playing and the roles we’re refusing to play. If you get mixed signals during that time, keep it simple and get to the heart of the matter easily using Mercury trine Pluto. This is doubly important as Mercury also conjuncts Venus, which also opposes Neptune and trines Pluto between September 23-26, impacting our Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, and Pisces houses.
The end of September brings another New Moon on the 25th at 3 Libra, showing that late September and the first half of October will bring us all “the dawning of a new day revealing a world utterly transformed.” As it is opposed Jupiter, it should “light up” our new Jupiter in Aries adventure; just be clear about the roles you want to play in the world which allow you to keep the momentum and initiative in your own hands.
As I mentioned earlier, Mars trine Saturn dominates the last half of the month, becoming exact on September 28. The Moon in Scorpio brings a very favorable set of configurations on September 28-29 when it forms a Fixed T-square followed by a trine to Neptune, sextiles to Mercury and Pluto, and then enters Sagittarius where it makes a sextile to Venus, trine to Jupiter, sextile to the Sun, and trine to Chiron on September 29-30.
This is the eighth month of the North Node in Taurus era! We’re now in a time of our greatest development coming through the sign of appreciation, value, and enjoying the best life has to offer.
Mars conjunct Jupiter in Aries in late May set the pace for new openings these next 2 years, so embrace the adventure in new actions and new freedom to be as authentic as you need to be. This month our wise friend Saturn continues to help us manage Aquarius energies in our lives, with the first third of September showing us how to build strength and resilience through “disappointing human relations,” and the rest of the month bringing “rewards from Spirit.” These will be most evident during the times Saturn is trined, whether from Gemini or Libra, and continues our training in utilizing spiritual power effectively.
We’re now in the home stretch of two years of non-stop friction between Saturn in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus. The square is active for many weeks to come, so keep eliminating all which is of no use in the future, keep building heart and focused spiritual expression, and remember your inner Spiritual Warrior can never be overcome. This will help us understand what matters and what doesn’t, so don’t worry if you have to say no to something or someone.
The tension from the square will be greatly relieved by January 2023. Given the friction between Aquarius and Taurus triggered these next 4 weeks each time the Moon transits the Fixed signs, stay focused on your larger ideals, and keep showing heart, taking heart, trusting the heart, strengthening the heart, and radiating the Love you ARE to your world, expressed through a conscious focus, concentration, and intention.
Our recent Aries initiatives will expand quickly in early 2023, with past and current Taurus experiences showing us how to keep it simple, pleasant, and steady. The current Virgo and Libra transits are helping us find power and awareness through Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, with past, present, and future “Tensions of Opposites” leading us to a higher integrated view as we resolve the opposition energies into understanding and productivity. Just remember that Gemini transits in May, June, and July gave us a “first look” at what we’ll be dealing with for many months to come during the Mars transit of Gemini. We began the first tests in late August. These will last through mid-October, with things slowing down or even going into reverse after that thanks to Mars retrograde.
The Sun in Virgo is a time to see the Light of “service in significant practical forms” which will lead us to new archetypal ideas and activities in Libra. Virgo is where we learn “to rule is to serve,” and utilize divine discernment to figure out the place and function of each detail presented to us to deal with. The emergent Aquarian ideal came to surface during the Leo transits, and Virgo helps us shape that energy into significant forms by knowing what to eliminate for practical purposes.
This year’s Aquarian energies are now beginning their climb to fulfillment this Autumn as prelude to the rapid developments to come in 2023. Because Jupiter is still in Aries, try to experience yourself as an individual unique spark of Light which is part of the greater infinite Light field.
As we’re now in the middle of the second year of a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned. Have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the Divine transfigured ideal of a more just truth and future. This month brings confrontations and blessings, sacrifices and openings, reviews and returns of truths. Cultivate your unique qualities, and be pulled into a more enjoyable future.
The 2022 Capricorn and Aquarius transits began a new chapter of utilizing forms of personal power in Capricorn to serve the emerging Aquarian ideal. A huge part of the past died earlier this year and a new expansive inspired energy came in via the Mars conjunction with Jupiter in Aries. This is the time to keep steady on our course, unimpeded by old mindsets and considerations.
Open to new allegiances, new ways of seeing and honoring beauty, and make adjustments in your trajectory at this turning of the seasons. We now have overcome old inertias, discovered ways to move events in various directions according to our understanding, and gotten a new dose of Wisdom involving the vision of our heart’s desire expressed in our efficient adaptation to events.
Our wisdom is taking shape through our power to attain freedom of movement despite limiting conditions. We are finding “spiritual linkage through emotional stress” and “the blessings which come after the end of old ways.” And because an eclipse has been removing all which would obstruct our happiness for the past 20 months, and the new global wisdom now spreading across our planet is filling that void, this is a time when we can find new forms of genuine happiness appropriate for who we are now.
We’ve ended many things and begun a new expression these past four months; the past is over and we all have begun our trek into a new world of new potential, new adventures, and new ways to enjoy being ourselves, doing our work of Destiny. Open to the abundance of the process of growth, since we are all on a rocket ship to the stars!
