Saturn goes stationary direct on September 18 at 1:47 am PDT, 9:47 am BST. What does this mean?
Saturn is about to resume its forward motion, and will re-trace ground it covered since it went stationary retrograde in mid-April 2019 at 21 Capricorn. We now commence our third experience of the Saturn lessons associated with the span from 14-21 Capricorn, which includes the individual, mental, and spiritual levels of the first half of Capricorn, and the actional-physical “face” and the social, emotional, and cultural face of the second half of Capricorn
What Have We Learned from Saturn in Capricorn in 2019?
We took our first look at the span between January and mid-April 2019, when it went stationary retrograde at 21 Capricorn. Then we got our retrograde look of Saturn in that span of Capricorn through now, and are on the threshold of our third experience of this span which will last until December 27, when it passes out of its shadow zone and moves into its occupancy of the last decan of Capricorn in January through March 2020 and July through December 2020.
In April we were introduced to Saturn’s main lessons for 2019. We have been challenged to organize our energies to help some sort of organized group performance which began to sprout in our lives November 2018 and will continue to transform us through 2020 and beyond. We have begun to assert ourselves in some organized social or emotional way, and have had many unique gifts and blessings come forth on the basis of our self-discipline and maturity.
Having been exposed to the themes of 14 through 21 Capricorn twice since January, we now revisit them a third time, and get to show our skill as a result of our practice these past 8 months. We now are comfortable with claiming our power to experience new things and to claim authorship when we need to, having attained a historical perspective allowing us to focus on what’s important and enduring while letting go of nonessentials.
We’re now moving into an entirely different level of individual, spiritual-social activity where we can demonstrate our expertise based in our past experiences. We’ve been rehearsing a future performance, accelerated our growth, found our protection, and let go of some unhealthy inhibitions. We now can use our understanding to apply our Saturn power in more concentrated and effective ways as a result of recent Virgo conjunctions all trine Saturn and Uranus, giving us grounded ways to integrate what is established with what is unique to us.
I gave you the themes of the coming months in the article Spiritual Astrology in Autumn 2019 –Saturn Stationary Direct Pt. 1 When Jupiter enters Capricorn in December, all the Plutonic seeds which Saturn has begun to sprout will take on new life. We’ll have major cycles of “rewards for our courage in battle” begin to come forth in the second and third weeks of January which will have a direct impact on the major changes to come in March 2020 when Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto all are within a few degrees of each other in late Capricorn and early Aquarius! Expect serious developments wherever you have the last 10 degrees of Capricorn and the first degrees of Aquarius in your chart at that time!
November also gives us more lessons in cooperation and letting go of unhealthy inhibitions, and December gives us another evolutionary acceleration and rehearsal of skills we’ll be using full time in 2020 and beyond. By the last week of December, Saturn will be out of its shadow zone, and moving into Saturn zones unknown to us since 1990.
So see what you’ve been learning since January requiring you to cultivate and use patience, discipline, organization, maturity and all the other good Saturn keywords. Be skillful in utilizing those energies between now and December. Our “final exam” on our skills in this area of life will come when Jupiter expands opportunities related to those early Cap skills when it crosses this span in December 2019 and January 2020, followed by Mars transiting this span of degrees in February-March 2020.
Of some note is that at this point, all the inner planets are closing their cycles with Saturn, with new ones beginning in January and March 2020. So this is a closing phase in the inner planet relationships with Saturn. As each conjuncts Saturn between December 2019 and March 2020, they will cross over the current Saturn direct station and set those themes into motion as they cross 14 Capricorn. Then as they cross 21 Capricorn, they set the retrograde station lessons into play so we can see how well we’ve prepared since last April.
That means we’ll have a lot of Saturn cycles set into motion in December, January and March. Venus begins the run with its conjunction with Saturn in December at 20 Capricorn. Mercury and the Sun will both conjunct Saturn and Pluto at the same time at 22 Capricorn in January. This will be followed by Mars
Saturn’s Stationary Direct Sabian Symbol
When a planet goes stationary direct, that degree becomes a platform for what happens next, as well as a “hot spot” that gets triggered with each subsequent conjunction to that point. Saturn’s Sabian symbol will therefore dominate the rest of this year as a primary influence in cultivating our authorship of our life and control over circumstances. It will also be a platform that will ground our efforts in 2020, so learn all you can from this energy that has dominated the landscape since early September, and will persist in direct occupancy through the end of September.
The Sabian Symbol for the 14th degree of Capricorn is “An ancient bas-relief carved in granite.” In the original Jones class notes published by Rudhyar in his masterwork The Astrology of Personality, Rudhyar says this is a degree of “Man’s power to leave permanent records of his achievements,” “personal immortality,” “fecundation of future by past,” and “assurance.”
In his Astrological Mandala, we are told that this degree is a point of technique of the past feeding our future where we find “the will to unearth, in our culture as well as in any culture, what has permanent value, and let go of nonessentials.” He implies we may be facing a period of “questioning and challenging the validity of traditional beliefs and customary attitudes,” which will show us core principles and symbols separate from superficial developments which may have obscured those timeless truths.
He challenges us to focus on “the immortal seed foundation” of things as well as “sustained and complete work produced by …. (our) effort to achieve creative perfection.” We are told this is the procedure of gaining a “deep and thorough appreciation of sociocultural processes in their enduring forms” that requires us to find a “penetrating and courageous insight founded on a valid historical perspective.” He states this degree falls in the Span of Illusiveness, and is the technical degree on the individual, mental, and spiritual level of the Scene of Crystallization in the Act of Capitalization
Dr. Marc Jones says this is a symbol of “the immeasurable potentiality of the present moment” for all that could be, and of our ability “to capitalize on opportunities” these moments bring to focus in ourselves and our world.” He says this degree is “an absoluteness of self as it proceeds to express itself with a true conviction,” which yields an achievement based in a larger perspective.
He says the keyword is FOUNDATION. We are told when operating positively, this degree “is a gift for bringing all things into a pattern of convenience and thereupon precipitating an inevitability of desired results.”
So as we stand on the platform from which Saturn will move forward, we can and will experience a foundation which our “immortal self” will use to express itself in some creative way as we again re-trace our Capricorn lessons from this point through the end of 2019. This is a degree of technique for sorting out enduring truths, values, and "great principles" from old beliefs and attitudes, where we’ll find what’s important in our past from the unimportant forms and further developments related to important factors shaping our social or cultural values.
From Here We Move Forward
Saturn now resumes its journey at the technical degree of the individual, mental, and spiritual level of the Scene of “Crystallization,” or first half of Capricorn. That makes Saturn the ruler of its domain, and as it’s in the second decan of Capricorn it takes on a sub-influence of Taurus, stabilizing and simplifying the inherent Capricorn energy.
So take a deep breath, and take another look at the themes introduced at the beginning of 2019. We’ve now all gotten a different look at those themes, and stand ready to move forward with expertise, discipline, and a sense of having grown wherever we have 14-21 Capricorn in our charts. As I noted in part 1, now that it moves forward it continues its remarkable dance with Uranus which will bring us highly specialized interactive gifts and circumstances, and then a fateful rendezvous with destiny later this year and 2020.
The trine between Saturn and Uranus in 2017-2018 offered us a long wave harmony and stabilized relationship between the forces of Structure and the forces of Revolution. 2017’s Fire trines provided inspiration and illumination related to the spiritual force we grounded in 2018 when these two powerhouses were in the Earth signs of Taurus and Capricorn.
During those years we blended past and future together to craft our future destiny in conscious ways. Their 2017 Fire trines stabilized Electric Fire and distributive “Fire by Friction,” which led naturally to the 2018 Earth trine helping us ground our efforts in practical ways. Saturn helps us give form and structure to our quest for Self-realization, and in Capricorn, teaches us how to construct an “organized personal structure” to the Uranian energies making our spiritual life come alive.
In 2019 Saturn’s tredecile and biseptile to Uranus unleashes highly specialized energies as we confront awakening to “a new quality of being, rendering the old patterns obsolete.” We are returning to source in unique and innovative ways which will throw us into radical new futures in 2020 and beyond.
