- Signs, Sabian Symbols, and What It All Means -

This article covers significant aspects, degree symbols, and other important factors in this New Moon chart. This is a measured inner retreat where we can measure our Soul growth and by noting inner changes we can know what’s coming in the future. Having transcended ourselves this past month, we now enter a month of getting clear about our spiritual individuality.

The second decan of Aquarius is where we expand our understanding of our spiritual vision. This is a stabilizing relatedness, both within and without, and helps us to new ways of giving and receiving information about our personal spiritual ideal. We are now launched into a new iteration of the emergent Aquarian era dawning, with this month particularly powerful because this New Moon is conjunct its ruler Saturn at home in its own sign.

Long Term Effects of the Capricorn and Aquarius Compressions

We began multiple long wave Capricorn cycles in early 2020, and created more long wave Aquarian cycles between March and December 2020. If you want to know more about the four year sequence of The Great Compressions of Early 2020, 2021, and 2022, that article explains that in January through March 2020 we experienced the second of four consecutive compressions of planets. The first was in early 2019 when all the planets were bundled in about one third of the sky, called a Bundle pattern, which is the rarest of all. While the inner planets transited through all the other signs after that, we again hit maximum compression again in March 2020, and then expanded through the rest of the year.

This clustering happened again in 2021 in the last half of January into early February, with maximum compression was around January 19-21 when all of the planets were within a 101 degree span, creating a very intense zone of activity wherever we have late Capricorn through early Taurus. Four planets in Aquarius and two in Taurus made for a very crowded house, with 10 distinct energies occupying less than 1/3 of the total space.

We’re now moving into the final compression of the run with all the planets in this chart between Mars at 6 Capricorn and Uranus at 11 Taurus. This year will hit maximum compression in early March, with all planets between 28 Capricorn and 12 Taurus, only 104 degrees! That’s the area most active in our charts at present. Though there will not be a compression in early 2023, there will be one more in early 2024.

Depending on the position of the Moon and the inner planets relative to the outer planets, different months bring us different Jones Patterns. These patterns operate their own independent influence, regardless of which planet is in which sign.

Currently, the outer planet occupied span begins with Pluto in late Capricorn, and proceeds through Saturn in Aquarius, Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces, and ends with Uranus in Taurus. (We don’t include TransPluto, since Jones didn’t use it in defining his patterns). Now that the inner planets are in Capricorn and early Aquarius, they are closing in on their coming conjunctions with Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter and Neptune over the next dozen weeks or so.

In this chart, we have a distinct cluster of the inner planets between Capricorn and the first half of Aquarius, with a huge cluster in a relatively short span. We have now begun a series of classic “Bucket” Jones patterns for several months except when the Moon is outside the occupied span.

The Bundle Pattern and how it works

This type of spread, with all the planets occupying approximately one third of the signs with two thirds unoccupied, creates “the least common of the seven basic differentiations,” and creates a “bunching of interests or the intensive self-gathering which is least responsive to any universal stimulus” and as Dr. Jones noted in a section on another pattern, a “special obsession with some particularly narrowed aspect of experience” which characterizes the Bundle people.

He continues that “the meaning of the concentration of the ten planets in one single third of the zodiac is that the course of the native’s life is held to certain narrow bounds of opportunism,” and they are “almost completely inhibited, in contrast with the outstanding lack of inhibition in the Splash pattern. He then goes on to say that “Characteristic of the Bundle type is an outstanding capacity for making much of little, or for building small beginnings into great and often unanticipated final results.” He also notes this type can mold their world “by some highly centralized force of self-concentration.” This type is not universal in the slightest, but rather “brings universe to center.”

With Mars in Capricorn leading the concentration of planets, and thus the entry to the entire pattern, it shows we need to be disciplined and organized in our approach to all things as we mobilize for a larger group effort. This is the time to be practical, reasonable, and balanced as we get things done.

With Uranus in Taurus closing the Bundle, find ways to allow the disciplined execution of plans to ease the way to innovative ways to “cultivate the garden of life and mind.” Enjoy the revolution in how you view matter, and use the Earth trine to cultivate practical ways of encouraging synthesized precise grounding energy to expand your effectiveness. This leads with actional and material Crystallization, and closes with individual, mental, and spiritual confirmation.

The Outer Planets Anchor the Pattern of A Third of the Sky

Because Jupiter has been approaching the outer planet span for several years, it has played a major part in how we entered life experience. It's why sometimes these past few years have seemed like a wild ride, an adventure, a quest, and more! With willingness, power, vision, and greater possibilities to contribute to a greater future good, we are now in the midst of a Cosmic “judgment day,” and must choose how we will express ourselves in our world, for better or worse. This has prepared us for the forceful awakening happening now, with the great mobilization happening.

In 2020 Jupiter entered the outer planet occupied span, and will be there for several years. Last year it made multiple conjunctions with Pluto, expanding and purifying that powerful energy wherever we have late Capricorn in our charts. After Jupiter’s third and final conjunction with Pluto in November, Pluto again leads the outer planet occupied span for decades to come as that occupied span opens up after Jupiter conjuncts Uranus and moves into Gemini in 2024.

That means we’ll have “competing conjunctions” in the larger global tides, since those Capricorn conjunctions will be in play for quite a while, along with the Mars conjunct Saturn coupled with the Grand Mutation Jupiter conjunct with Saturn, both at 1 Aquarius. The Aquarian conjunctions launched a new 20 year and 200 year era, so take a look at how you organized, reorganized, or restructured your life in 2020 and see how you prepared to find power flowing to you and from you as we all move into a vaster tide of evolution related to long term Aquarian wave forms.

In this New Moon, as mentioned earlier, we have one large intense occupied span with two different sign energies. The first is Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Pluto all within a 21+ degree span, and the second is the Lunation plus Saturn all within a 3+ degree span. This month the inner planets are all concentrated between Mars at 6 Capricorn and the Lunation at 13 Aquarius, making that 36+ degree spanthe primary personal focus. Capricorn and the first half of Aquarius will be very highly active these next 4 weeks.

The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon

A New Moon sets the seed forms for what the following month will demonstrate. This Lunation falls at 13 Aquarius, and it is said that the second third (decan) of any sign deals with the social, emotional, and cultural levels of life, and being the second decan of Aquarius it has a sub-influence of Gemini with an added dose of Mercury. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth.

The Sabian Symbol we’ve been given for the 13th degree of Aquarius is “A barometer.” In the original notes from the Marc Jones class on the symbols published in The Astrology of Personality, Rudhyar says this is a degree of “vantage point in consciousness whence life may be observed and measured in peace” and “inner retreat of a soul seeking truth.”

In The Astrological Mandala, he says this degree is one of “the ability to discover basic natural facts that allow us to plan in advance for action.” He states this isn’t about “ascent or descent” but rather “natural laws which invo0lved causal relationships and the passage of one natural condition into another. The barometer registers air pressure, and a change of pressure today gives some indication of what the weather will be tomorrow.”

He continues “planning for the near future is a possibility because the potential (or seed) of the future is already operating at the core of the present.” He offers that this symbols “tells us that it is most important to seek…. A knowledge of causal progression,” which implies the keyword “anticipation.” He says this symbol falls in the span of defensiveness, and it’s the synthesizing degree of the individual, mental, and spiritual level of the scene of Contribution in the Act of Capitalization.

According to Dr. Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, the degree is one of humanity’s “great love for living (our) experience in advance, and of (our) gift for meeting every possible contingency by an effective estimation of (our) own potentials.” He says this is about using our mind power for insights, and we balance this “with the tendency of nature to operate at all points through quite specific and measurable dependabilities.”

He continues by stating that we know “life can always be made to reveal an pertinent details of its fundamental ordering, and gives us the keyword INDICATION. He states when operating in a positive way, this degree “is unusual keenness of observation and exceptional competence in judgement.”

So the specific theme of the next month involves us “seeing the Light” of our ability to know what’s coming in the future by the inner changes we sense in the present, and we can know the larger life order unfolding by our observations and judgments in the present. This is the time to accept a larger role to play based in what we know is consistent within us and without us.

Important Aspects

Remember that in reading a Lunation chart (as well as a horary, inceptional, electional, or any event chart) the forming aspects show things to come, while separating aspects show things already past. Partile separating aspects show what’s been going on in the Now. This section covers only forming and partile separating aspects.

We’re approaching another great compression of planets as evidenced by 4 planets in Capricorn and 3 in early Aquarius. As a result, there are almost no waxing aspects, and very few of any substantial angle except as defined by Mars and Uranus as entry and exit points for the occupied span. This month, thanks to the translation of Light via the Lunation, the Saturn square Uranus friction is back in play, with Saturn the stronger of the two due to the Sun and Moon conjunct Saturn.

The Lunation features the conjunction with Saturn, and also makes a close separating square with Uranus. Besides these major aspects it makes only minor ones with the other planets. Because the inner planets are closing in on the outers, the main aspects can only be a trine or less.

Other than the aspects mentioned above, the Lunation makes a vigintile to Mercury, a semisextile to Venus, a decile to Mars, quindecile to Jupiter, and novile to Neptune; Mercury is vigintile to Mars, novile Jupiter, widely biseptile Uranus, and conjunct Pluto; Venus is conjunct Mars, trine Uranus, and quintile Neptune; and Mars is sextile Jupiter, novile Saturn, trine Uranus, and quintile Neptune.

Outer planet aspects feature Jupiter sextile Uranus, conjunct Neptune, and novile Pluto; Saturn is square Uranus, decile Neptune, and vigintile Pluto; and Uranus is septile Neptune and bisepile Pluto.

Special Configurations in Evolutionary Astrology

This month there are three evolutionary configurations directly in play, with two harmonious and one the Grand Irrationality. In no particular order, the configurations are:

Mars is trine Uranus, with Jupiter in sextile to both. This gives us three points of a “Six Pointed Star of Productivity,” beneficially aspecting planets we have in the early degrees of the Earth and Water signs.

Venus quintile Neptune, with Saturn in the middle in decile to both Venus and Neptune. This is a configuration of special gifts and circumstances coming forth in those areas of our charts. This is a highly specializing configuration primarily impacting planets or points in the active zones around 1 Taurus/Scorpio, 3-7 Sagittarius/Gemini, 9-13 Capricorn/Cancer, 15-19 Aquarius/Leo, 21-25 Pisces/Virgo, and 27-30 Aries/Libra.

The third evolutionary configuration is of course the Grand Irrationality, continuing the blend of the first one via Neptune and the second, more hard-edged one via Uranus. The Uranus septile Neptune continues to generate voids in other signs which are triggered by transits and triggering choices and changes to any planets or points we have near any of the 7 affected “hot zones” around 25 Capricorn-1 Aquarius, 17-23 Pisces, 8-14 Taurus, 30 Gemini-6 Cancer, 21-27 Leo, 12-18 Libra, and 4-10 Sagittarius. This month reintroduces the Uranus biseptile Pluto, and with Mercury at 25 Capricorn conjunct Pluto and biseptile Uranus, we have the configuration in full play this month!

Explaining Harmonics

This month we have a lot of spiritual aspects! In the various harmonic series, this month is a mixed bag. In the specialization harmonic series, we have a bunch! 3 vigintiles, 2 quindeciles, 3 deciles, and 2 quintiles. The 9th harmonic gives us FIVE noviles. All novile series (9th harmonic) indicates things which need to be put on the shelf for a while, or that which has been gestating can now move forward. If you want to know more about this important “spiritual gestation” series which mark points of potential spiritual realization and integration, there are several articles in the archives.

This month we have no aspects in the 11th harmonic elftile series. In the nonrational septile series, we have only 1 septile and 2 biseptiles. The 11th harmonic series indicate that faith is required to deal with transcending some dualities, and 7th harmonic aspects indicate forks in the road of destiny.

The novile (9th harmonic), septile (7th harmonic) and elftile (11th harmonic) series all feature spiritual aspects. All novile series aspects represent gestative energies that can lead to great spiritual realizations. Septile series aspects represent forks in the road of destiny, while the elftile series aspects represent issues and points of evolution where we confront the need to resolve some sort of duality by making a leap of faith to attain a form of mastery over that type of duality. This series tests our faith.

The quintile and biquintile (5th harmonic) and related 10th (decile and tredecile), 15th (quindecile), and 20th harmonic (vigintile) aspects are all specialization aspects. Element Balance and Who’s Leading the Sun

This month shows an imbalance in the elements, with Earth continuing to dominate the landscape. We have the 10 traditional planets occupying only 4 signs, and much more cold than hot. We have no planet in Fire (inspiration and warmth), 5 planets in Earth (practical grounding), 3 in Air (relatedness and communicating), and 2 in Water (feelings and experiencing). This month we have Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and Taurus represented, with no planet in the other signs.

Air and Earth are “cool” elements, while Fire and Water are “hot” elements. With this distribution, we have a lot more cold than heat and no Fire. Consider this a time of practical idealism or organized vision. With Jupiter in Pisces, we’re in for considerable more Water than we have been, so get your sea legs in shape!

Because the New Moon falls in mid-Aquarius, Pluto is again temporarily the “Gateway to the Light.” This helps us find power in seeing the seeds and cooperating with the larger transformational energies in play right now. With Mercury conjunct Pluto, all of us have the ability to see to the core of things. “Break on through to the other side….”

The current sequence at present of Deciding, Feeling, and Thinking

We’ve been through several different sequences over the past few months. There are six patterns, and each has their strengths and weaknesses. This Lunation begins a new pattern which will shift several times in the next few weeks due to Venus and Mercury now in direct motion. For now, as a process of moving through events, the most effective “firing sequence” for approaching life and experience over the next 4 weeks involves leading with our feeling, and then thinking, and then making decisions at the end of the process.

This is a time to enter experience with a sense of feeling what we’re experiencing, or who we’re with. This pattern holds back until it has moved its feeling into a vision or an understanding. This pattern leads with feelings, and then seeks information to confirm or deny those feeling impressions. It feels its way into ideas, visions, interactions, and understanding.

However, once we’ve felt our way to a vision or understanding, then it will be important to make a decision and act on it. Once we’ve moved everything forward that one step, then a new feeling-experience will naturally arise that points the way to the next view or information needed to again move it forward one step.

So feel, flow, experience, since these will lead you to information and understanding. When your understanding leads to a clear vision, then see the fundamental fact, or act that must be done to move it all one step forward. Let your feeling and experience follow your actions, and let your mind follow your feelings into new views and understanding that can help you make decisions that you’ll act on.

Summing Up

This New Moon in Aquarius renews our Aquarian vision and/or our sense of how to contribute spiritually to the emerging era. This is a time of doors opening to the future, so remember to finish up the old before moving into a more limitless set of possibilities. This is an interesting re-set at the end of a two year Capricorn cycle, and helps us bring many different parts of our lives together.

We continue our many week compression wherever we have Capricorn and Aquarius in our charts, which is a very crowded house or two! Suppose you had a boat with 12 rooms, and suddenly 7 people showed up in only two of them. All of this happening with a looming dreamscape getting denser by the minute, with thick fog rolling in and the need to navigate by instinct rather than visual references. Welcome to the next few weeks, and remember to stay balanced!

This is the end game for what we’ve been working on since early 2020, a harvest as well as a “new way for new things” type of month. We’re now seeing the heart of any matter if we choose to, and can mobilize our energies in disciplined and organized ways as we feel what’s coming in the future.

There are gifts to be had because of the many vigintiles, deciles, and quintiles, and we again stand at a crucial fork in the road of our collective destiny. We’ve been through a phase of “self-transcendence,” and now can see the Light of how to make an even greater contribution to the new era than we have before now.

Because Jupiter is racing through Pisces, learn how to flow within the uncertainty, the expanded feelings, the sense of universal emotions running the gamut from sorrow to ecstasy. Its degree in this Lunation indicates hearing a call to renewal, so get ready for interesting forms of rebirth!

Pisces is where we feel all there is to feel, for better or worse. Just remember that sometimes what you’re feeling can’t be taken personally, and should be regarded as your inner “witness conscience” feeling something which needs compassion or forgiveness.

During the coming few months many who have trained will begin to be able to “know at a distance,” and send compassionate thoughts to those who need it. If circumstances warrant it, be willing to find silent or unobtrusive ways to bless the endings for those who are most afraid of letting go.

In 2020 we entered a transition phase in human history. While we still have to function within the Capricorn cycles we began in 2020, we also have crossed the threshold of an era unknown to humanity since the 13th and 14th centuries. Even then, we were still in the depth of the Age of Pisces, so the awakening of new ideas then were relative to the old era, whereas what’s coming involves wave after wave of Aquarian energies, pushing us to the coming Great Age emerging in the second half of this century.

As noted earlier, these long wave Aquarian pulses were initially set into motion by the Mars conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius on March 31, 2020, marking the initiation of archetypal Aquarian preliminary structures offered by Saturn. The promise and potential of the new Aquarian pulse then began to expand into a greater social and cultural vision beginning at the Jupiter conjunction with Saturn, the Grand Mutation of the Solstice also at 1 Aquarius. So we have 20 years of Aquarian energies set into motion by that conjunction!

Of note is that Venus and Mars will conjunct at 1 Aquarius in March 2022, giving a new impetus and new expression to the Aquarian structures which grow and take shape in 2021. After that, the next time Mars transits Aquarius will be in February and March 2024, when it conjuncts Pluto at 1 Aquarius in February about 3 weeks after Pluto’s first ingress into Aquarius. That begins the Pluto in Aquarius “generation” of the 21st century which lasts until 2043. As there will be a Jupiter conjunction with Pluto at 15 Aquarius in 2033, we’ll see the “expansion of the Angels of the Age of Aquarius” at that time.

2021 opened a new adventure for all of us, and the long term “metamorphosis” we went through showed us what the beginning of the coming Age of Aquarius is about. Last year helped us remember we are Beings of Light, a Superstar shining the Light of our Eternal Love into our world. We’re now expanding that promise and we’ll see developments related to this evolutionary leap beginning in March.

Last year’s Solar Eclipses have helped us all turn a Cosmic Corner and move in a new direction. We’ve “lowered one flag and raised a new one” and will continue to do so for many months and years. The “Cosmic Recycler” quality of the 2019 and 2020 Cancer eclipses are helping remove old habits and sentimentalities, and many things which used to be familiar patterns in our lives have ended, are ending, or will end.

Both the Cancer and Sagittarius eclipses of 2020 are removing all we do not need in our Cancer and Sagittarius response in the houses they fell in. The Sag Eclipse is removing all which blocks our happiness, and I’m certainly looking forward to the restoration of more humor, more freedom, more largeness of vision, and greater truths and futures promised as old obsolete Sag forms are taken away. December’s Sag eclipse reinforced the December 2020 Sag eclipse while giving us a rebirth of love. June’s eclipse is removing old Gemini responses, and will purify our life and mind while repressed material comes up and claims its due.

New groups of Spiritual communities formed last year and will continue to form this year, and those which are Aquarian in nature were “lifted on the wings of angels” in 2021. Trust the process. We are learning not to play to the generic confusion, irrationality, and misleading notions. Revolution is in the air! And when you find things and people of eternal worth, value them with all your heart.

Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend

Saturn continues its long term occupancy in its home sign of Aquarius. While we’ll still be dealing with the individual, mental, and spiritual levels of the group work set into motion last year, we are now experiencing Saturn’s Aquarius qualities. In that sign, Saturn continues to be the final dispositor of all planets transiting Capricorn and Aquarius from now through 2023. It was a major influence in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 Eclipses, continuing its years-long power behind events.
