The January 2022 New Moon at 13 Capricorn Pt. 2

The January 2022 New Moon at 13 Capricorn Pt. 2

- Signs, Sabian Symbols, and What It All Means -

This article covers significant aspects, degree symbols, and other important factors in this New Moon chart. This is a “disciplined self-transcendence” New Moon requiring our willingness to let go, let god, be our Highest Self, and flow into a newer vaster field of feelings connecting us with the entire human condition. Be willing to use spiritual power to grow as a benefactor of others.

The second decan of Capricorn is where we stabilize the process of claiming our personal spiritual power. This is a self-initiating “activating Earth,” and allows us to enjoy the process of our organized self-purification. We are now at the end of the old Capricorn cycles and about to begin a new set! We continue to be in a “harvest season,” seeing how the past set up rewards as we move into the future.

Long Term Effects of the Capricorn and Aquarius Compressions

We began multiple long wave Capricorn cycles in early 2020, and created more long wave Aquarian cycles between March and December 2020. If you want to know more about the four year sequence of The Great Compressions of Early 2020, 2021, and 2022, that article explains that in January through March 2020 we experienced the second of four consecutive compressions of planets. The first was in early 2019 when all the planets were bundled in about one third of the sky, called a Bundle pattern, which is the rarest of all. While the inner planets transited through all the other signs after that, we again hit maximum compression again in March 2020, and then expanded through the rest of the year.

This clustering happened again in 2021 in the last half of January into early February, with maximum compression was around January 19-21 when all of the planets were within a 101 degree span, creating a very intense zone of activity wherever we have late Capricorn through early Taurus. Four planets in Aquarius and two in Taurus made for a very crowded house, with 10 distinct energies occupying less than 1/3 of the total space. The final compression will occur in early 2022.

Depending on the position of the Moon and the inner planets relative to the outer planets, different months bring us different Jones Patterns. These patterns operate their own independent influence, regardless of which planet is in which sign.

Currently, the outer planet occupied span begins with Pluto in late Capricorn, and proceeds through Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius, Neptune in Pisces, and ends with Uranus in Taurus. (We don’t include TransPluto, since Jones didn’t use it in defining his patterns). Now that the inner planets are in mid- Sagittarius, Capricorn, and early Aquarius, they are closing in on their coming conjunctions with Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter over the next dozen weeks or so.

In this chart, we have a distinct cluster of the inner planets between mid-Capricorn and early Aquarius, with a huge cluster in a relatively short span. Because the Nodal axis defines the hemisphere which is occupied and the other which is unoccupied, we still have a “Bowl” Jones pattern until Mars enters Capricorn.

So What is a “Bowl Pattern” and how does it work?

This type of spread, with all the planets occupying approximately half of the signs with an empty half opposite the occupied half, creates a “special type of conscious selfhood,” which Dr. Jones says “marks the Bowl type of temperament. He goes on to state “Fundamentally it is an extreme self-containment,” which “holds things, and a Bowl individual is one who always has something to bear.”

He goes on to state that with the Bowl, “the whole dynamic of man, his total power of achievement, arises in his instinctive realization that he is set off against a definite part of the world, that there is a complete segment of experience from which he is excluded in some subtle fashion. The Bowl not only holds something, but also places whatever it holds into relationship with a larger consideration.”

Dr. Jones continues that “the occupied segment of the Bowl horoscope reveals the activity and organization of the self, since planets are significant according to their place by sign and house, and the unoccupied segment becomes a challenge to existence, or the need and emptiness to which the native must direct his attention. The outstanding characteristic of the Bowl temperament is its marked sense of what is self-contained in contrast with what the self cannot hold, and this take an everyday form in an advocacy of some cause, the furtherance of a mission, an introspective concern over the purpose of experience.”

He concludes his explanation of how the pattern works with “The Bowl native always has something to give to his fellows, whether literally or psychologically, whether constructively or vindictively, because his orientation to the world arises from division; that is, frustration and uncertainty. The leading planets, determined in exactly the same way as for the Locomotive pattern, give a point of application, and shows where and how the native seeks to carry out his mission or gain his everyday justification for existence.”

He brings up another important point of analysis, as he states “the leading planet is of secondary importance in the Bowl pattern, unless it is found in a strong opposition or cosmic cross. The fundamental attack on the problems of life by the Bowl individual is indicated more significantly by the tilt or house-position of the Bowl-segment.”

He concludes this section by stating “the Bowl character is definitely more self-expending, or self-seeking, and more practically interested in what things mean and what they are. It continually throws the emphasis from the signs into the houses. It a general way the Bowl tends to ‘scoop up’ things and initiate experience when the position of the leading planet ranges from the fourth cusp, up and over the ascendant, to the midheaven cusp, and then inclines to “capture” things or consummate various phases of life when the leading planet is placed similarly from the tenth angle down over the descendant to the nadir.”

Mars at 15 Sagittarius is the leading planet on a degree of anticipating the future through signs and symbols in the present, as well as “revelation of basic life purposes and cycles through omens,” we’ll be getting signals about what’s coming. With Uranus closing, we finish experience by seeing how “the garden of our life” is expressing our individuality. At this time we can find and/or express our uniqueness by seeing how Nature is supporting what we are cultivating. This leads with individual and spiritual abstraction, and closes with individual and spiritual substantiation.

The Outer Planets Anchor the Pattern In A Third of the Sky

During 2018, 2019, and 2020, Jupiter played a major part in entering life experience because it was the planet leading the span. It’s why those years seemed like a wild ride, an adventure, a quest, and more! These years prepared us for the forceful awakening happening now during this time of great mobilization.

In 2020 Jupiter entered the outer planet occupied span, and will be there for several years. Last year it made multiple conjunctions with Pluto, expanding and purifying that powerful energy wherever we have late Capricorn in our charts. After Jupiter’s third and final conjunction with Pluto in November 2020, Pluto again leads the outer planet occupied span for years to come as that occupied span opens up after Jupiter conjuncts Uranus and moves into Gemini in 2024.

That means we’ll have “competing conjunctions” in the larger global tides, since those Capricorn conjunctions will be in play for quite a while, along with the 2020 Mars conjunct Saturn coupled with the Grand Mutation Jupiter conjunct with Saturn, both at 1 Aquarius. As you know, the Aquarian conjunctions launched a new 20 year and 200 year era moving from materialism to idealism, so take a look at how you reorganized or restructured your life in 2020, preparing to find power flowing to you and from you as we move into a vaster tide of evolution toward long term Aquarian wave forms.

The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon

A New Moon sets the seed forms for what the following month will demonstrate. This Lunation falls at 13 Capricorn, and it is said that the second third (decan) of any sign deals with the social, emotional, and cultural levels of life, and being the second decan of Capricorn it has a sub-influence of Taurus with an added dose of the Mars. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth.

The Sabian Symbol we’ve been given for the 13th degree of Capricorn is “A Fire Worshiper.” In the original notes from the Marc Jones class on the symbols published in The Astrology of Personality, Rudhyar says this is a degree of “firm establishment upon immemorial principles,” “consciousness of absolute unity,” “depth of Soul penetration,” and “self-conquest.”

In The Astrological Mandala, he says this degree is one of “the subjective quest for ultimates beyond the interplay of life and death processes.” He states “Beyond cultural enjoyment and the passion of accumulation of … sense knowledge stands the willful and determined ‘adventure in consciousness’ of the occultist, the yogi, the mystic. The mystery of fire has always captured (our) imagination because it is the mystery of all transformations wrapped in the enigma of death.”

He goes on to state “At times when collective, perhaps total, death could be in store for (humankind)… meditation is fascinating an ever-greater number of people. He asks the question if we’re ready “to take this step which the masters of yoga claim to have taken: to experience death and return to the same body? Are we ready to demonstrate (our) will to transcendence?” He says this symbols falls in the span of Illusiveness, and it’s the synthesizing degree of the individual, mental, and spiritual level of the scene of Crystallization in the Act of Capitalization.

According to Dr. Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, the degree is one of “inner strength through (realizing) an inviolable tie with the creative power of the universe itself, dramatized by (our) continual outreach to the divine in a spiritualizing of (our) aspiration and a dedication of (our) talents and possessions.” He offers that we know we “must demonstrate (our) ultimate independence of (our) circumstances or else surrender” our potential.

He continues “Here is ideality brought to the point of miracle,” and he gives us the keyword MAGIC. He states when operating in a positive way, this degree “is extraordinary skill in enlisting every resource of the world for the exaltation of self and the consummation of its ambitions.”

So the specific theme of the next month involves us “seeing the Light” of our eternal connection to Spirit, and finding our unique form of magic which enables us to demonstrate our gifts and talents. This is the time to be willing to become more than we were in a stable form of self-transcendence. There are rewards to be gained in the future because of the promise of this New Moon, so be receptive and deepen your Soul connection and awareness of the World Soul.

Important Aspects

Remember that in reading a Lunation chart (as well as a horary, inceptional, electional, or any event chart) the forming aspects show things to come, while separating aspects show things already past. Partile separating aspects show what’s been going on in the Now. This section covers only forming and partile separating aspects.

We’re approaching another great compression of planets as evidenced by 4 planets in Capricorn and 2 in early Aquarius. As a result, there are almost no waxing aspects, and very few of any substantial angle except as defined by Mars and Uranus as entry and exit points for the occupied span. At least the Saturn square Uranus friction is now about to pass for awhile, and besides that, there’s only 3 semisquares and a wide Mars square Neptune.

The Lunation features the conjunction with retrograde Venus, translating the light of the Lunation conjunction with Pluto to reinforce this four fold convergence. The Sun and Moon also make a close separating trine with Uranus while Venus makes a serendipitous tredecile to Uranus and Pluto again is in biseptile to Uranus, triggering the next phase of the volatile and hard edged “Grand Irrationality.”

Other than the aspects mentioned above, the Lunation makes a vigintile to Mercury, semisextile to Mars, semisquare to Jupiter, and semisextile to Saturn; Mercury is semisquare Mars, semisextile Jupiter, refrained conjunction with Saturn, and septile Neptune; Venus is decile Mars, novile Jupiter, vigintile Saturn, and sextile Neptune; and Mars is quintile Jupiter, biquintile Uranus, and novile Pluto.

Outer planet aspects feature Jupiter vigintile Saturn, quintile Uranus, vigintile Neptune, and decile Pluto; Saturn is square Uranus, decile Neptune, and vigintile Pluto; and Uranus is septile Neptune and bisepile Pluto.

Special Configurations in Evolutionary Astrology

This month there are two evolutionary configurations directly in play, both involving Uranus due to it receiving both specializing and nonrational aspects. In no particular order, the configurations are:

Mars quintile Jupiter and biquintile Uranus, with Jupiter quintile Uranus. This is a configuration of special gifts and circumstances coming forth in those areas of our charts. This is a highly specializing configuration primarily impacting planets or points in the active zones around 13-19 Sagittarius, 25 Aquarius- 1 Pisces, 7-13 Taurus, 19-25 Cancer, and 1-7 Libra.

The second evolutionary configuration is of course the Grand Irrationality, continuing the blend of the first one via Neptune and the second, more hard-edged one via Uranus. The Uranus septile Neptune continues to generate voids in other signs which are triggered by transits and triggering choices and changes to any planets or points we have near any of the 7 affected “hot zones” around 25 Capricorn-1 Aquarius, 17-23 Pisces, 8-14 Taurus, 30 Gemini-6 Cancer, 21-27 Leo, 12-18 Libra, and 4-10 Sagittarius. This month reintroduces the Uranus biseptile Pluto, and with Mercury at 1 Aquarius septile Neptune expanding the zone even though Mercury is not in a 7th harmonic aspect with either Uranus or Pluto.

Explaining Harmonics

This month we have a lot of spiritual aspects! In the various harmonic series, this month is a mixed bag. In the specialization harmonic series, we have a bunch! SIX vigintiles, 3 deciles, 1 quintile, 1 tredecile, and 1 biquintile. The 9th harmonic gives us 2 noviles. All novile series (9th harmonic) indicates things which need to be put on the shelf for a while, or that which has been gestating can now move forward. If you want to know more about this important “spiritual gestation” series which mark points of potential spiritual realization and integration, there are several articles in the archives.

This month we have no aspects in the 11th harmonic elftile series. In the nonrational septile series, we have only 2 septiles and a biseptile. The 11th harmonic series indicate that faith is required to deal with transcending some dualities, and 7th harmonic aspects indicate forks in the road of destiny.

The novile (9th harmonic), septile (7th harmonic) and elftile (11th harmonic) series all feature spiritual aspects. All novile series aspects represent gestative energies that can lead to great spiritual realizations. Septile series aspects represent forks in the road of destiny, while the elftile series aspects represent issues and points of evolution where we confront the need to resolve some sort of duality by making a leap of faith to attain a form of mastery over that type of duality. This series tests our faith.

The quintile and biquintile (5th harmonic) and related 10th (decile and tredecile), 15th (quindecile), and 20th harmonic (vigintile) aspects are all specialization aspects. You can find more by going to Astrology Class on the Specializing Aspects Pt. 1 – The Quintile and Biquintile, and Astrology Class on the Specializing Aspects Part 2 – The Decile, Tredecile, Quindecile and the Vigintile.

Element Balance and Who’s Leading the Sun

This month shows a slightly balanced imbalance in the elements, with Earth dominating the landscape. We have the 10 traditional planets occupying 5 signs, and twice as cold as hot. We have 1 planet in Fire (inspiration and warmth), 5 planets in Earth (practical grounding), 2 in Air (relatedness and communicating), and 2 in Water (feelings and experiencing). This month we have Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and Taurus represented, with no planet in the other signs.

Air and Earth are “cool” elements, while Fire and Water are “hot” elements. With this distribution, we have twice as much cold as heat, with very little Fire. Consider this a time of practical idealism or organized vision. Now that Jupiter is in Pisces, we’re in for considerable more Water than we have been, so get your sea legs in shape!

Because the New Moon falls in mid-Capricorn, Mars in Sagittarius is the “Gateway to the Light.” This helps us find strength and courage in anticipating the future through seeing its signs in the present. “Break on through to the other side….”

The current sequence at present of Deciding, Feeling, and Thinking

We’ve been through several different sequences over the past few months. There are six patterns, and each has their strengths and weaknesses. This Lunation begins a new pattern which will shift several times in the next few weeks due to Venus being retrograde and Mercury about to go retrograde between mid-December and early February. For now, as a process of moving through events, the most effective “firing sequence” for approaching life and experience over the next 4 weeks involves leading with our deciding, then feeling, and then thinking.

This Lunation shows we’ll enter experience with a sense of something to be done. This pattern is very strong, and leads with deciding and acting, followed by feeling and experiencing what those decisions and actions mean on deep levels. Ideally, those deep feelings then can lead us to a new vision, a new understanding, or a communication that can lead us to a different view. However, with Venus retrograde, it will be important to remember that just because we feel a certain way doesn’t make it true or useful. That’s why once we get to a feeling, we must find a new view, or new understanding, of what we’re doing.

So make a decision and act as needed, and after the decision or action, sit with the feelings and experience them, bringing them to the surface of your consciousness and get clear about what you’re feeling and why. After you’re clear about what you’re feeling, then go get new information and update your perceptual files and what you think you know, or what’s being communicated. That will lead naturally to a new set of decisions and actions.

This pattern knows how to get things done! Another strength of the pattern is learning and teaching through anecdote, so frame things in terms of something which needs to be decided or done, and once you’ve set it into motion, then update your perceptions and understanding. If you don’t know what to do, let your thinking and envisioning follow your feelings, since getting a new view or understanding will naturally show you what to do and how to do it.

Summing Up

This New Moon in Capricorn helps us leave our old self behind, embracing the magic of our eternal connection with Spirit. This will bring returns and renewals, as well as inner sensations of changes to come. This is entirely future oriented, and gives a new understanding and appreciation of cycles set into motion in January and March 2020, with a review helping us reorganize, revalue, reassess, and renew our way of relating to others.

We now begin a many week compression wherever we have Capricorn and Aquarius in our charts, so prepare once more for a very crowded house or two! Suppose you had a boat with 12 rooms, and suddenly 6 people showed up in only two of them. All of this happening with a looming dreamscape getting denser by the minute, with thick fog rolling in and the need to navigate by instinct rather than visual references. Welcome to the next few weeks!

This is the end game for what we’ve been working on since early 2020, a harvest as well as a “get ready in a new way for new things” type of month. We’re still growing through accepting gifts from the invisible realm, with patience and self-discipline the antidotes for any lack of clarity, whether our own or another’s. There are gifts to be had because of the quintiles, and we again stand at a crucial fork in the road of our collective destiny. Willingly embrace your future, your self-transcendence, your newer or more important duties and responsibility, and you’ll experience yourself in totally different ways than you used to!

Because Jupiter is now in Pisces, learn how to flow within the uncertainty, the expanded feelings, the sense of universal emotions running the gamut from sorry to ecstasy. Pisces is where we feel all there is to feel, for better or worse. Just remember that sometimes what you’re feeling can’t be taken personally, and should be regarded as your inner “witness conscience” feeling something which needs compassion or forgiveness.

During the coming few months many who have trained will begin to be able to “know at a distance,” and send compassionate thoughts to those who need it. If circumstances warrant it, be willing to find silent or unobtrusive ways to bless the endings for those who are most afraid of letting go.

In 2020 we entered a transition phase in human history. While we still have to function within the Capricorn cycles we began in 2020, we also have crossed the threshold of an era unknown to humanity since the 13th and 14th centuries. Even then, we were still in the depth of the Age of Pisces, so the awakening of new ideas then were relative to the old era, whereas what’s coming involves wave after wave of Aquarian energies, pushing us to the coming Great Age emerging in the second half of this century.

As noted earlier, these long wave Aquarian pulses were initially set into motion by the Mars conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius on March 31, 2020, marking the initiation of archetypal Aquarian preliminary structures offered by Saturn. The promise and potential of the new Aquarian pulse then began to expand into a greater social and cultural vision beginning at the Jupiter conjunction with Saturn, the Grand Mutation of the Solstice also at 1 Aquarius. So we have 20 years of Aquarian energies set into motion by that conjunction!

Of note is that Venus and Mars will conjunct at 1 Aquarius in March 2022, giving a new impetus to the Aquarian structures which grow and take shape in 2021. After that, the next time Mars transits Aquarius will be in February and March 2024, when it conjuncts Pluto at 1 Aquarius in February about 3 weeks after Pluto’s first ingress into Aquarius. That begins the Pluto in Aquarius “generation” of the 21st century which lasts until 2043. As there will be a Jupiter conjunction with Pluto at 15 Aquarius in 2033, we’ll see the “expansion of the Angels of the Age of Aquarius” at that time.

We are all actively in a long term “metamorphosis” which is already opening a new adventure for all of us right now! Because the last two degrees of Aquarius show us what the beginning of the coming Age of Aquarius is about, last year helped us remember we are Beings of Light, a Superstar shining the Light of our Eternal Love into our world. This year expanded that promise, and we’ll see developments related to this evolutionary leap beginning in March.

Last year’s Solar Eclipses have helped us all turn a Cosmic Corner and move in a new direction. We’ve “lowered one flag and raised a new one” and will continue to do so for many months and years. The “Cosmic Recycler” quality of the 2019 and 2020 Cancer eclipses are helping remove old habits and sentimentalities, and many things which used to be familiar patterns in our lives have ended, are ending, or will end.

Both the Cancer and Sagittarius eclipses of 2020 are removing all we do not need in our Cancer and Sagittarius response in the houses they fell in. The Sag Eclipse is removing all which blocks our happiness, and I’m certainly looking forward to the restoration of more humor, more freedom, more largeness of vision, and greater truths and futures promised as old obsolete Sag forms are taken away. Last month’s Sag eclipse reinforced the December 2020 Sag eclipse while giving us a rebirth of love. June’s eclipse is removing old Gemini responses, and will purify our life and mind while repressed material comes up and claims its due.

New groups of Spiritual communities formed last year and will continue to form this year, and those which are Aquarian in nature were “lifted on the wings of angels” in 2021. Trust the process. We are learning not to play to the generic confusion, irrationality, and misleading notions. Revolution is in the air! And when you find things and people of eternal worth, value them with all your heart.

Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend

Saturn continues its long term occupancy in its home sign of Aquarius. While we’ll still be dealing with the individual, mental, and spiritual levels of the group work set into motion last year, we are now experiencing Saturn’s Aquarius qualities. In that sign, Saturn continues to be the final dispositor of all planets transiting Capricorn and Aquarius from now through 2023. It was a major influence in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 Eclipses, continuing its years-long power behind events.

Because Saturn plays such a large part in ruling the stage of Life for many months and even years to come, if you haven’t gotten your copy already, please give yourself the timeless gift of my book, Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend. We all need to make friends with our inner Saturn if we would claim our power to fulfill our higher purpose as Spirits in the material world.

Saturn helps us give form and structure to our quest for Self-realization. We are learning to use the “organized personal structure” built in Capricorn last year as we move into our greater Aquarian group work to concretize a spiritual ideal for the future, with an eye to the greatest good for the greatest number. We now approach how to structure our individual Soul energy to make our spiritual life come alive.

This book shows you the way to take command of your power to steer your life in a conscious way, using Saturn’s strengths and skills to be led to mastering life on your own terms. It was written for both astrologers and non-astrologers, and will help you understand how your life experiences assisted your Soul growth and your power to turn away from negative karmic cause and effect patterns. Each time you re-read any part of it you’re sure to find undiscovered gems of insight helping you throw off attitudes which frustrate your ability to live your higher Purpose on your own terms.
