-Signs, Sabian Symbols, and What It All Means-

This article covers significant aspects, degree symbols, and other important factors in this New Moon chart. This is a “focused intensity” New Moon, so eliminate to regenerate, and see things from a symbolic angle so you can understand your connection to Spirit and each other through a deeper experience.

The second decan of Scorpio is where we experience the fulfilled truth of Aquarius as a spiritual connection to source. What began earlier this year is now culminating, with “the experiment near completion” as we learn to outwit someone or something, or even a process. We’ve begun to train to use a “higher power” by December.

Long Term Effects of the Capricorn and Aquarius Compressions

We began multiple long wave Capricorn cycles in early 2020, and created more long wave Aquarian cycles between March and December 2020. If you want to know more about the four year sequence of The Great Compressions of Early 2020, 2021, and 2022, that article explains that in January through March 2020 we experienced the second of four consecutive compressions of planets. The first was in early 2019 when all the planets were bundled in about one third of the sky, called a Bundle pattern, which is the rarest of all. While the inner planets transited through all the other signs after that, we again hit maximum compression again in March 2020, and then expanded through the rest of the year.

This clustering happened again in 2021 in the last half of January into early February, with maximum compression was around January 19-21 when all of the planets were within a 101 degree span, creating a very intense zone of activity wherever we have late Capricorn through early Taurus. Four planets in Aquarius and two in Taurus made for a very crowded house, with 10 distinct energies occupying less than 1/3 of the total space. The final compression will occur in early 2022.

Depending on the position of the Moon and the inner planets relative to the outer planets, different months bring us different Jones Patterns. These patterns operate their own independent influence, regardless of which planet is in which sign.

Currently, the outer planet occupied span begins with Pluto in late Capricorn, and proceeds through Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius, Neptune in Pisces, and ends with Uranus in Taurus. (We don’t include TransPluto, since Jones didn’t use it in defining his patterns). Now that the inner planets are in Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius, they are closing in on their coming conjunctions with Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter over the next dozen weeks or so.

In this chart, we have a distinct cluster of the inner planets between late Libra and mid-Scorpio, with Venus at the last degree of Sagittarius. So for now, all the planets are in a little over 190 degrees, creating a “Bowl” Jones pattern.

So What is a “Bowl Pattern” and how does it work?

This type of spread, with all the planets occupying approximately half of the signs with an empty half opposite the occupies half, creates a “special type of conscious selfhood,” which Dr. Jones says “marks the Bowl type of temperament. He goes on to state “Fundamentally it is an extreme self-containment,” which “holds things, and a Bowl individual is one who always has something to bear.”

He goes on to state that with the Bowl, “the whole dynamic of man, his total power of achievement, arises in his instinctive realization that he is set off against a definite part of the world, that there is a complete segment of experience from which he is excluded in some subtle fashion. The Bowl not only holds something, but also places whatever it holds into relationship with a larger consideration.”

Dr. Jones continues that “the occupied segment of the Bowl horoscope reveals the activity and organization of the self, since planets are significant according to their place by sign and house, and the unoccupied segment becomes a challenge to existence, or the need and emptiness to which the native must direct his attention. The outstanding characteristic of the Bowl temperament is its marked sense of what is self-contained in contrast with what the self cannot hold, and this take an everyday form in an advocacy of some cause, the furtherance of a mission, an introspective concern over the purpose of experience.”

He concludes his explanation of how the pattern works with “The Bowl native always has something to give to his fellows, whether literally or psychologically, whether constructively or vindictively, because his orientation to the world arises from division; that is, frustration and uncertainty. The leading planets, determined in exactly the same way as for the Locomotive pattern, give a point of application, and shows where and how the native seeks to carry out his mission or gain his everyday justification for existence.”

He brings up another important point of analysis, as he states “the leading planet is of secondary importance in the Bowl pattern, unless it is found in a strong opposition or cosmic cross. The fundamental attack on the problems of life by the Bowl individual is indicated more significantly by the tilt or house-position of the Bowl-segment.”

He concludes this section by stating “the Bowl character is definitely more self-expending, or self-seeking, and more practically interested in what things mean and what they are. It continually throws the emphasis from the signs into the houses. It a general way the Bowl tends to ‘scoop up’ things and initiate experience when the position of the leading planet ranges from the fourth cusp, up and over the ascendant, to the midheaven cusp, and then inclines to “capture” things or consummate various phases of life when the leading planet is placed similarly from the tenth angle down over the descendant to the nadir.”

Mercury at 29 Libra is the leading planet on a degree of “civilization building.” Find rhythmic and balanced approaches to initiate experience, reconstructing how things came to be as they are. Be joyous as you join with others in building for the future, with an eye to getting rid of what is no longer needed while going deeper into our magnetic connection with “All-That-Is.”

With Uranus closing, awaken to your individuality by “cheerfully balancing a mountain of baggage,” and go for whatever type of gain that’s yours for the taking. At this time we are individualized by taking a look back at how we’ve been liberated in the past through self-mobilization. This leads with individual and spiritual reconstruction, and closes with individual and spiritual substantiation.

The Outer Planets Anchor the Pattern In A Third of the Sky

During 2018, 2019, and 2020, Jupiter played a major part in entering life experience because it was the planet leading the span. It’s why those years seemed like a wild ride, an adventure, a quest, and more! These years prepared us for the forceful awakening happening now during this time of great mobilization.

In 2020 Jupiter entered the outer planet occupied span, and will be there for several years. Last year it made multiple conjunctions with Pluto, expanding and purifying that powerful energy wherever we have late Capricorn in our charts. After Jupiter’s third and final conjunction with Pluto in November, Pluto again leads the outer planet occupied span for years to come as that occupied span opens up after Jupiter conjuncts Uranus and moves into Gemini in 2024.

That means we’ll have “competing conjunctions” in the larger global tides, since those Capricorn conjunctions will be in play for quite a while, along with the 2020 Mars conjunct Saturn coupled with the Grand Mutation Jupiter conjunct with Saturn, both at 1 Aquarius. As you know, the Aquarian conjunctions launched a new 20 year and 200 year era moving from materialism to idealism, so take a look at how you reorganized or restructured your life in 2020, preparing to find power flowing to you and from you as we move into a vaster tide of evolution toward long term Aquarian wave forms.

The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon

A New Moon sets the seed forms for what the following month will demonstrate. This Lunation falls at 13 Scorpio, and it is said that the second third (decan) of any sign deals with the social, emotional, and cultural levels of life, and being the second decan of Scorpio it has a sub-influence of Pisces with an added dose of the Sun. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth.

The Sabian Symbol we’ve been given for the 13th degree of Scorpio is “An inventor experimenting.” In the original notes from the Marc Jones class on the symbols published in The Astrology of Personality, Rudhyar says this is a degree of “driving power toward achievement, as featured in all benefactors of humanity,” “self-sufficient activity,” and “clever outwitting.”

In The Astrological Mandala, he says this degree is one of “the driving urge toward achievement, which is at the root of civilization.“ He states that “the development of more complete and efficient forms of social interplay – the essence of the process of civilization – demands ingenuity, inventiveness and the willingness to experiment within relatively secure test conditions.” This means going to “the roots of problems…. as well as discover the principles controlling the interaction between material particles and larger bodies.” He continues by offering that “technology is only one approach to an immensely complex problem,” and “intuition is as necessary to success as intellectual analysis.”

He goes on to state this “stresses the value of individual initiative, perseverance and caution in any attempt to understand how everything is related to everything else,” and tells us “what is most needed is the ability to relate seemingly unrelated facts.” He says it falls in the span of Retention, and it’s the synthesizing degree of the individual, mental, and spiritual level of the scene of Communion in the Act of Group Integration.

According to Dr. Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, the degree is one of “the joy of effort put forth on the imaginative or intellectual side of life, and of the creative achievement by which (an individual) is able to make a special niche for (themselves) in some particular sphere of activity.” He continues this is about “a complete dependence on the ingenuity and resources of selfhood and an emphasis on the fact that there is no area of reality in which it is not possible to expand (our) usefulness and to facilitate some unique contribution.”

He gives us the keyword of CLEVERNESS. He tells us that when operating in a positive manner, the degree is “a capacity for accomplishment beyond all normal expectation.”

So the specific theme of the next month involves forms of taking the initiative to experiment in something which expands our capacities. This is a month of achievement, courage, “outwitting” and using ingenuity to make “a special place for ourselves” in some interactive sphere.

Important Aspects

Remember that in reading a Lunation chart (as well as a horary, inceptional, electional, or any event chart) the forming aspects show things to come, while separating aspects show things already past. Partile separating aspects show what’s been going on in the Now. This section covers only forming and partile separating aspects.

As mentioned, we are now in a season when the inner planets are closing in on the outer planets, with the only oppositions left happening at this Lunation with Sun and Moon opposing Uranus, to be followed by Mercury and Mars opposing Uranus later this month. Of course, those with planets in late Cancer, Leo, late Virgo, and the first half of Scorpio are still having oppositions due to the current transits.

We’re still in a time of relatively few, but very significant aspects between the planets! The Saturn square Uranus friction will pervade the atmosphere for the rest of this year and beyond, and it’s set into motion in a big way in this chart! The most powerful aspects in this Lunation are the exact Sun and Moon oppositions to Uranus generating two special evolutionary configurations.

The Lunation is exactly opposed Uranus, with Venus cutting an Octile driven evolutionary configuration and Pluto cutting a 10th harmonic special configuration. Other than that, the Lunation makes only a wide trine to Neptune. Other aspects include Mercury sextile Venus, conjunct Mars (out of sign), and trielftile Saturn; Venus is sextile Mars, septile Jupiter, decile Saturn, binovile Neptune, and vigintile Pluto; and Mars is tredecile Jupiter, square Saturn, widely opposed Uranus, sesquisquare Neptune, and binovile Pluto.

Outer planet aspects are fewer than usual. We see Jupiter binovile Uranus and semisextile Pluto; Saturn is square Uranus and semisquare Neptune, and Uranus is septile Neptune and tredecile Pluto.

Special Configurations in Evolutionary Astrology

This month there are three evolutionary configurations directly in play, with two involving the Lunation and all involving Uranus due to the exact opposition, setting up an axis of “tensional awareness” helping us express the genius of Uranus in a focused way! In no particular order, the configurations are:

The Lunation opposed Uranus cut into a quintile and tredecile by Pluto. This is extraordinarily efficient in getting to the heart of any matter, and promises deep insights as well as a focused serendipity of circumstances perfect for our gifts and gifts perfect for our circumstances. This generates a void to attract unique circumstances and blessings in late Cancer, indicating some will receive “a mantle of power” which will put them in leadership positions in the future. Affected zones are near 1-3 Virgo/Pisces, 5-9 Libra/Aries, 11-15 Scorpio/Taurus, 17-21 Sagittarius/Gemini, 23-27 Capricorn/Cancer, and 29-30 Aquarius/Leo.

The Lunation opposed Uranus cut into a semisquare and sesquisquare by Venus, This creates three points of an octile-driven “Rhombus Diamond” configuration with intense “cutting, grinding, and polishing” energies wherever we have the first degrees of the Cardinal signs, the middle degrees of the Fixed signs, and the final degrees of the Mutable signs. This generates an intense void in late Gemini, so be ready to act on information you receive, or give information another needs to act.

The third special evolutionary configuration is of course the Grand Irrationality, continuing the blend of the first one via Neptune and the second, more hard-edged one via Uranus. The Uranus septile Neptune continues to generate voids in other signs which are triggered by transits and triggering choices and changes to any planets or points we have near any of the 7 affected “hot zones” around 27 Capricorn-1 Aquarius, 19-23 Pisces, 11-15 Taurus, 2-6 Cancer, 23-27 Leo, 14-18 Libra, and 6-10 Sagittarius.

This month Jupiter plays a big part in our aspects in play, since Venus is septile Jupiter and Mars is tredecile Jupiter. Jupiter is not only going give a blessing to many, helping them get ready for greater work, but there’s high specialization and interactive gifts promised by Mars.

Venus septile Jupiter puts the ruler of our Taurus and Libra at a fork in the road relative to the ruler of our Sagittarius and Pisces. This primarily affects 29 Sagittarius-4 Capricorn, 21-25 Aquarius, 12-16 Aries, 4-8 Gemini, 25-29 Cancer, 17-21 Virgo, and 8-12 Scorpio. This is a culminative turning point which blesses us to move into a greater spiritual training.

Mars tredecile Jupiter puts the ruler of our Aries and Scorpio (and the ruler of the Lunation!) in very favorable relationship to the ruler of our Sag and Pisces. This primarily affects 2-6 Scorpio/Taurus, 8-12 Sagittarius/Gemini, 14-18 Capricorn/Cancer, 20-24 Aquarius/Leo, and 26-30 Pisces/Virgo. If you have a planet in one of these zones, you’re in for some VERY fortunate events!

Explaining Harmonics

This month we have fewer aspects than usual, mostly harmonious but with some intensely frictional ones as well from Scorpio! In terms of the various harmonic series, this month is a mixed bag. In the specialization harmonic series, we have 1 vigintile, 1 decile, 2 quintiles, and 2 tredeciles. The 9th harmonic gives us 3 binoviles. All novile series (9th harmonic) indicates things which need to be put on the shelf for a while, or that which has been gestating can now move forward. This month we have only one aspect in the 11th harmonic elftile series, a trielftile. In the nonrational septile series, we have only 2 septiles. The 11th harmonic series indicate that faith is required to deal with transcending some dualities, and 7th harmonic aspects indicate forks in the road of destiny.

We have quite a bit of friction this month, mainly associated with three oppositions to Uranus from Scorpio and Mars square Saturn! This is a natural culmination of this year’s friction between fixed sign energies, so be strong and courageous as you generate positive Taurus and Leo to balance the conflict. Oppositions require a broad awareness and square require a clear balancing action.

The novile (9th harmonic), septile (7th harmonic) and elftile (11th harmonic) series all feature spiritual aspects. All novile series aspects represent gestative energies that can lead to great spiritual realizations. Septile series aspects represent forks in the road of destiny, while the elftile series aspects represent issues and points of evolution where we confront the need to resolve some sort of duality by making a leap of faith to attain a form of mastery over that type of duality. This series tests our faith.

The quintile and biquintile (5th harmonic) and related 10th (decile and tredecile), 15th (quindecile), and 20th harmonic (vigintile) aspects are all specialization aspects. Element Balance and Who’s Leading the Sun

This month shows a wide imbalance in the elements, with Water slightly more preponderant than Air. We have the 10 traditional planets occupying 7 signs in a skewed element distribution. We have 1 planet in Fire (inspiration and warmth), 2 planets in Earth (practical grounding), 3 in Air (relatedness and communicating), and 4 in Water (feelings and experiencing). This month we have Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and Taurus represented, with no planet in the other signs.

Air and Earth are “cool” elements, while Fire and Water are “hot” elements. With this distribution, we have a balance between heat and cold, but an excess of Air and Water. There’s barely enough fire to heat anything, so we’ll have to draw on that internally. Water is the main element in play this month, and the Air signs offer a time of ideas, communicating plans, and interactions.

Because the New Moon falls in mid-Scorpio after the Sun conjuncted Mars but before Mercury has its conjunction with Mars between November 8-12 (an EXTREMELY volatile time!), the “Gateway to the Light” is dynamic Mars in its home sign! This helps us find strength and courage in moving deeper into the mystery of fulfilling our purpose through the training we’re doing. “Under pressure….”

The current sequence at present of Deciding, Feeling, and Thinking

We’ve been through several different sequences over the past few months. There are six patterns, and each has their strengths and weaknesses. This Lunations continues the one in play for the past few weeks. As a process of moving through events, the most effective “firing sequence” for approaching life and experience over the next two weeks involves leading with our thinking, communicating, envisioning and finding a new view of things, followed by decisions and actions, and then feeling what we’ve done and seen.

This pattern leads with their understanding, vision, or analytical perceptions, and then makes decisions and acts based in those perceptions to achieve a new understanding or vision. While it is tempting to move back into more thinking, analyzing, and envisioning after we act, instead of going back to the mind to confirm our action, we must get to our feeling-experience around what we just decided or did. When we go deep enough and understand what we are experiencing, then new information, new understanding, and/or a new vision will naturally arise that points the way to the next action.

When you are moved by an idea, vision, perception, or understanding, it will naturally lead to decisions on the basis of those ideas. This should be followed by a time of solitude and reflection where we can identify what we’re feeling and experiencing. Once we identify what we’re experiencing, we’ll naturally be moved to search for newer information, newer ideas, newer interpretations, and newer views. So let your thinking and communicating and envisioning lead you to “right action,” and feel what you must to come to a newer view.

Summing Up

This New Moon in Scorpio quickens our training, our focus, our intensity, and our ability to get things done remarkably efficiently! We rested and relaxed to whatever degree the past month, and now resume “the experiment which nears completion.” There are a multitude of blessings coming over the next few weeks, with many events symbolizing what we’ve accomplished as we move toward greater accomplishment. This is a time to see future patterns and be willing to train to get ready to “pick up and deliver spiritual power” in the near future.

There’s electric awareness in the air, getting us ready for the major crunch time between November 8 – 12 when Mercury conjuncts Mars, and both square Saturn the exact day the Moon’s in Aquarius conjunct Saturn and square both Mercury and Mars! I’m expecting some very volatile events around that time, so slow down, be careful, and don’t take chances, since it seems explosiveness will be in the air! It’s a specially eventful time for those with planets between 6-10 of the Fixed signs and 21-25 of the Mutable signs. And it's happening very close to the place where the January squares occurred!

Those who are cooperating with the larger growth trends are being lifted up as if on wings. We now move forward into the final chapter of the larger 2021 process of “graduation into a new realm of Being,” knowing the doors which opened beginning May 2020 have now shown us alternative futures and adventures to be embraced in December. With Jupiter still having one more transit through the Transfiguration Zone, we’re literally in the heart of a larger transformation process, so stay open to whatever you need to learn to become the Spiritual Adult who has emerged from their chrysalis.

While we still have to function within the Capricorn cycles we began in 2020, we also have crossed the threshold of an era unknown to humanity since the 13th and 14th centuries. Even then, we were still in the depth of the Age of Pisces, so the awakening of new ideas then were relative to the old era, whereas what’s coming involves wave after wave of Aquarian energies, pushing us to the coming Great Age emerging in the second half of this century.

As noted earlier, these long wave Aquarian pulses were initially set into motion by the Mars conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius on March 31, 2020, marking the initiation of archetypal Aquarian preliminary structures offered by Saturn. The promise and potential of the new Aquarian pulse then began to expand into a greater social and cultural vision beginning at the Jupiter conjunction with Saturn, the Grand Mutation of the Solstice also at 1 Aquarius. So we have 20 years of Aquarian energies set into motion by that conjunction!

Of note is that Mars will transit Aquarius in March and April 2022, giving a new impetus to the Aquarian structures which grow and take shape in 2021. After that, the next time Mars transits Aquarius will be in February and March 2024, when it conjuncts Pluto at 1 Aquarius in February about 3 weeks after Pluto’s first ingress into Aquarius. That begins the Pluto in Aquarius “generation” of the 21st century which lasts until 2043. As there will be a Jupiter conjunction with Pluto at 15 Aquarius in 2033, we’ll see the “expansion of the Angels of the Age of Aquarius” at that time.

We are all actively in a long term “metamorphosis” which is already opening a new adventure for all of us, with the final phase in November and December! Because the last two degrees of Aquarius show us what the beginning of the coming Age of Aquarius is about, last year helped us remember we are Beings of Light, a Superstar shining the Light of our Eternal Love into our world. This year expands that promise.

Last year’s Solar Eclipses have helped us all turn a Cosmic Corner and move in a new direction. We’ve “lowered one flag and raised a new one” and will continue to do so for many months and years. The “Cosmic Recycler” quality of the 2019 and 2020 Cancer eclipses are helping remove old habits and sentimentalities, and many things which used to be familiar patterns in our lives have ended, are ending, or will end.

Both the Cancer and Sagittarius eclipses of 2020 are removing all we do not need in our Cancer and Sagittarius response in the houses they fell in. The Sag Eclipse is removing all which blocks our happiness, and I’m certainly looking forward to the restoration of more humor, more freedom, more largeness of vision, and greater truths and futures promised as old obsolete Sag forms are taken away. June’s eclipse is removing old Gemini responses, and will purify our life and mind while repressed material comes up and claims its due.

New groups of Spiritual communities formed last year and will continue to form this year, and those which are Aquarian in nature are being “lifted on the wings of angels” in 2021. Trust the process. We are learning not to play to the generic confusion, irrationality, and misleading notions. Revolution is in the air! And when you find things and people of eternal worth, value them with all your heart.

Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend

Saturn continues its long term occupancy in its home sign of Aquarius. While we’ll still be dealing with the individual, mental, and spiritual levels of the group work set into motion last year, we are now experiencing Saturn’s Aquarius qualities. In that sign, Saturn continues to be the final dispositor of all planets transiting Capricorn and Aquarius from now through 2023. It was a major influence in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 Eclipses, continuing its years-long power behind events.
