Urban trees are one of the best interventions we have when it comes to mitigating climate chaos. In other contexts, you need to know what you are doing when it comes to tree planting. Creating healthy and robust ecosystems depends on having the right trees in the right place. Getting that wrong can cause more harm than good. In urban environments it is usually the case that any tree is a good idea.

Trees are very effective air conditioning units. They provide shade in hot weather, so that buildings and pavements do not heat up as much. They slow rainfall, so also mitigate against flooding. Trees influence the climate around them; if you have enough trees you are more likely to have enough rain. Trees improve air quality and reduce noise pollution. These are huge benefits, far more cost effective than any technology we might try and use for these purposes. Trees have the additional advantage of being carbon sinks, so they also help tackle the underlying problem.

We know that green spaces have a huge positive impact on mental health. Planting trees is a low-cost mental health intervention that helps everyone who encounters them. Where there are more urban trees, there tends to be less urban crime. Trees turn out to have some really interesting effects in how we feel about ourselves and each other.

The presence of trees introduces beauty. Urban spaces are often unappealing and can be grim, but trees can transform any space. We need nature and beauty to promote human flourishing. This is not a luxury add-on but a necessity for life.

The human-created disasters that surround us are not inevitable. There is a great deal we can do to improve the state of the world. Interventions do not need to be costly or difficult to be effective, nor do we need to wait for some scientific breakthrough to save us. We already know a lot about what we can do to improve life and reduce climate chaos.

We need to believe that we can improve things, that it is worth doing and that we do not have to wait on leadership for all of this.
