“If you feel like you don’t fit into the world you inherited it is because you were born to help create a new one.”

The first New Moon of the decade is friendly for the outcasts, the fringe dwellers, the downtrodden, the subterranean homesick aliens (yes, that’s a Radiohead reference. You know me). Those who have been excluded, marginalized and vilified simply because of who they are. Those whom the current system has failed. Arriving on January 24, 2020, at 04°21 of quixotic, utopian Aquarius (9:42 PM UTC), this New Moon is a cosmic love letter to anyone whose simple existence is a revolutionary act in itself.
Aquarius is the sociologist of the Zodiac, the outsider looking in, armed with an effortless ability to read every single social cue, pattern or trend. “Humanitarian” is one of the adjectives that are most often associated with this sign; I would also add “inclusive” and “intersectional” to the list. The Water Bearer is the patron saint of the collective, yet is adamant about holding space for the constellation of our individual identities, and granting equal opportunities to each.
With Jupiter, Pluto, Saturn (the ancient ruler of Aquarius) and Ceres all stacked up in Capricorn at the time of this New Moon, “opportunity” is something we are tasked with working on in practical, proactive ways, but still, this New Moon in Aquarius represents an opportunity to liberate ourselves by stepping into a future that honors who we are and what we stand for.
The New Moon in Aquarius makes few major aspects to the other bodies, one of them being a square to none other than Aquarius ruler himself, Uranus, currently transiting the earthy, level-headed sign of Taurus.
The planet of rebellion and innovation has been tilling the fertile soil of the sign of the Bull since May, 2018, urging us to question our beliefs around money, values and financial stability, our relationship with Earth’s natural resources and the critical stage reached by their ruthless exploitation. Aquarius is undoubtedly a “big picture”, socially oriented Air sign, and still, the fresh start initiated under this New Moon is closely interconnected with our mutated awareness of practical matters, since the access to resources of any kind is largely dependent on our status within society.
Thus, this New Moon hints at the potential to do something innovative and life-altering with the resources at our own disposal, making the most of what we have, or even to maximise our access to resources in spite of, or precisely because of, our status as individuals that are kept at the margins of the current economic system: our unique gifts, attitudes and abilities — and why not? Technology — can help us reclaiming abundance and prosperity in a world that is slowly awakening to the urgent necessity of social, environmental and economic change.
The other interesting aspect is a harmonious sextile made by the New Moon in Aquarius to Chiron and Lilith in Aries: there is hope, relief and acceptance for the wounded and the stigmatized within the new community, and the new world, that we ourselves are birthing, little by little, through our individual effort. And if Chiron’s vulnerability can become our strength, Lilith’s raw, sexual energy and refusal to be silenced will make sure that our voice will be heard and acknowledged.
This New Moon wants us to reclaim our place in the world, on our own terms. It’s often said that none of us is free until all of us are free. Conversely, we can liberate others by liberating ourselves. Freedom begins with us and within us.
