The Weekly Rune ~ BERKANA

berkana-eihwaz

For the week of 3 January 2016

Informed detachment serves us well, this week

Eihwaz is the half-month rune through 28 December. The half-month rune is set by the traditionally accepted runic calendar, and governs for a tad over two weeks. Read right to left is Eihwaz, followed by Berkana (Berkano) as the intuitive stave. The intuitive stave brings the focus of the half-month rune into sharper focus for the present week.

Following is a summary of The Weekly Rune. Read the full runecast for more details on how these runes impact human life force over the next week, and how to best manage the curves and twists.

The calendar New Year greets us at the cusp stave of Eihwaz. The 13th rune in the traditionally accepted ordering of the Elder Futhark, it indicates a death, or transformation, from which we can’t turn. Likewise, this rune can’t be reversed.

Having come through Jera  at the Winter Solstice, we have settled into the realization that we don’t have to do things alone. Jera is the acquisition of tools, perhaps allies. Eihwaz brings the reality check, of a double-edged sword variety. While it reminds us that we are alone no matter what helpful trinkets we may have in our [metaphorical?] pockets, it also reminds us that self-power really is enough.

Berkano brings an interesting detachment to this meeting of selves. This stave is wrapped in intrigue, in that it’s not clearly attested in the Elder or Younger futharks. It represents a tree in both, though different trees–it’s a birch in one, and a fir tree in the other. In that light, Berkano is a bit of a trickster, of deep sorcery.  What remains significant is its connection to feminine healing, though it’s contested as being maternal in nature. It’s often more readily attributed to the role of mid-wife, certainly feminine and nurturing, though without the emotional strings of motherhood.

Focus on navigation by internal needs, not external planning. It’s the way home this week.

    Overview

Runes are a method of divination similar to the Tarot or the I Ching. The difference is that Runes are a set of 25 stones instead of 78 cards or a set of sticks with patterns. As with the Tarot, most of the Runes may be rightside up, or up side down, the meaning differing with the case. There are also some Runes that can not appear up side down. In practice, the Runes may be made of any material; ceramic, stones, sticks, or drawn on cards.

Runes originated with the ancient Etruscans and were spread upwards throughout the Alpine regions to Northern Europe via the trade routes. The Germanic tribes took them and adapted them to their own needs and uses. The oldest and most widespread of the Germanic runes are the Elder Futhark or Common Germanic Runes. The word rune, which occurs in various forms in Germanic and Celtic languages, means "a mystery" or "holy secret" that is "whispered".

Runes were traditionally carved into bone, wood or stone which accounts for their angular shape. The lack of curves made it easier to create the shapes in either hard wood or stone.
