The Gift of Loss

The Gift of Loss

Of all the gains I’ve had the honor of acquiring, it’s the losses I am most grateful for.

Not because it’s a nice spiritual thing to say or because I imagine letting go of one thing makes space for something even better. I am grateful for each loss and its inexplicable ability to reveal deeper levels of courage, greater layers of character, and nearly invincible forms of humility. These qualities arise in experience as a result of all the things I am willing to live without. While there is nothing wrong with any degree of gain, it may distract from the evolution of our soul. This happens when something to receive becomes something to possess, covet, and control.

Because every experience that begins is only starting its voyage toward an inevitable ending, we learn to embrace beginnings and endings as two sides of a continuous, ever-evolving cycle of expression. As the hand learns to remain open, allowing beginnings and endings, births and deaths, to come and go on their own rhythm of expression, a deeper grace begins to dawn. We no longer seek highs or fear lows, but allow it all to be honored, received, savored, and taken as a journey. In this journey, only the wisdom and compassion of the soul shall live forever in timeless joy.

It is why, of all the gains I’ve had the honor of acquiring, it’s the losses I am most grateful for. To each loss, unexpected change, and moment of death I’ve ever encountered: thank you for always knowing where to find me, so I wouldn’t dare to miss out on becoming the one I was always destined to be.

All for love,

Matt Kahn
