7 Top Ways to Stay Healthy for College Students

College life can be a mess, especially when you’re involved in too many activities. Finishing up your school assignments, working out, volunteering, and having a social life pile up. On top of that, you’ve got to do laundry, cook, and basically become an adult. While this journey can be exciting, it can also overwhelm you. You can easily burn out – and if that happens, you won’t be able to focus on anything. Plus, you might risk damaging your health. To stay healthy, in shape, and going, here are the most important tips to follow as a college student.
- Keep your living space clean and organized
Keeping your room clean is very important as it will help you stay focused on your work. Make sure you clean your space regularly and keep everything around you dust-free and sanitary. Something as small as changing your bedsheets could help clear the air in your room. Ensure that your bedroom, living room (shared room), and bathroom stay clean. Purchase the basic cleaning materials that you need, including a vacuum cleaner and other cleaning supplies. Keeping your room clean is a must.
- Get enough sleep every night
You may hear this every single day, yet this piece of advice never gets old. Get enough sleep every night! This saying might be underrated for all I know. That’s because most college students don’t understand the importance of getting enough sleep. The less you sleep, the less able to focus you’ll become. If you don’t want your grades to suffer, you should get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.
- Stay active by working out
You have no idea how much working out can help you stay on top of your schoolwork! Breathing in, breathing out, allowing oxygen to decongest your mind, sweating, and doing regular cardio will help you in many ways. Not only will it boost your cognitive abilities, but it will also improve your sleep quality and eating behavior. Plus, you’ll become more immune to disease!
- Eat well, avoid fast foods
Your next goal is avoiding fast foods and eating as healthy as you can. I know that as a college student this can be tricky, but you should do your best at becoming more food responsible. As they say, you become what you eat, so making sure that you’re ingesting whole foods and not frozen meals is essential. Start by cooking a delicious, healthy meal each day. Commit to doing that for at least 21 days. You will see that by the end of the month, you’ll already know how to cook and will have formed a healthy habit
- Know when and how to say ‘yes’
Parties are great. They really are. But there’s a time and a place for them. Saying ‘yes’ to any party that pops up your way is not a good idea- in fact, it is a terrible idea. You’ve got to make sure that you’ve got enough free time to spare before saying ‘yes’ to that. So, hear me out. You should say ‘no’ to these events during exams or right before. You should say ‘no’ to parties when you’ve got an assignment due the next day. And most importantly, you should say ‘no’ to parties when you haven’t gotten enough sleep during the week.
- Drink plenty of water
If you say ‘yes’ to partying, remember to drink plenty of water (jk, remember that anyways please). In any case, staying hydrated is important if you want to focus well. Your body needs water to perform at its maximum level, so don’t take away that opportunity from yourself.
- Take time to become mindful
This final tip is about you. There are do’s and don’ts that you should respect as a college student, but there’s also a time to be mindful. Develop this mindset in the best way that you can. For starters, you could begin by meditating 10 minutes per day. It works, I promise!
Wrapping Up
Creating new habits is your most important tool. To stay healthy in college, you need to rest well, eat well, and exercise. As long as you do this, the rest will follow. Make sure that you’re taking enough time for yourself as well – if you’re not mindful about how you feel, think, and act, you might behave recklessly and focus less on your schoolwork. Stay tough and create habits that stick. Stay healthy and in shape. Good luck!
