How Dental Health Can Improve Your Overall Health

How Dental Health Can Improve Your Overall Health

There is a deep connection between your dental health and the state of your overall health. This might be a new concept for many people and surprising for some, but it is true. Some of your dental issues arise from issues with your overall health. Skilled dentists will be able to direct you towards getting a proper diagnosis of the underlying problem as well.

When you visit a general physician because of some ailment, one of his first actions is to use a torch and take a look inside your mouth. Consider this action carefully. The mouth can tell much about your health without even talking. Taking care of your dental health has its benefits. But did you know that good dental health can improve your overall health? Let us explain how.

The link between oral health and overall health

Before we can delve into how we can improve general health through dental health, let us look at the connection between the two. Most factors that have a detrimental effect on your overall health also affect your oral health. Take the case of tobacco chewing, for example. You know very well that tobacco chewing is related to cancers and cardiovascular diseases. However, the lesser acknowledged effects of tobacco chewing include periodontal disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. Some of the initial signs of AIDS and diabetes are also mouth lesions and such oral problems.

The link between oral health and overall health

You have another example in your diet. It will affect not only your general state of health, but also your dental health. One of the symptoms of Bulimia nervosa, a severe eating disorder is damaged teeth and gums. Stress is generally known to affect your health, but did you know that it could even affect your dental health? It harms your body's immune system. This impact reduces the immune system's ability to fight against the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. The final result of it all is that your oral health can get affected by gum diseases more easily.

Perhaps the most shocking effect of gum disease is the risk of premature delivery. There is also the risk of giving birth to a baby with low birth weight. You may have questions about the connection between oral health and the growth or delivery of a baby. The toxins released from an oral infection travel through the bloodstream of the pregnant woman. From there, these toxins move through the placenta and interfere with the healthy development of the baby. The oral infection may also induce labor by causing the production of substances that trigger labor.

Your dental health can generate crucial information about your general state of health and quality of life.  By now, you are aware that your dental health and overall health are interconnected in more ways than one. One can affect the other and vice versa. Treating one can help the other. So let’s discuss how you maintain good dental health to improve your general state of health.

Improve dental health to improve the overall health

If you are serious about improving your health, you need to keep a check on your dental health as well. Your saliva is also a very useful diagnostic tool. Many diseases and substances are easy to detect through saliva testing.

Did you know that it is difficult to control diabetes on account of chronic gum disease? It is true. The infection resulting from the gum disease may make lead to insulin resistance, which in turn will give rise to complications in blood sugar control. If you improve your dental health, you can fight diabetes better. Now isn’t that a revelation?

There is also a shocking effect of the bacteria in your mouth on the health of your heart. The gingivitis bacteria may give rise to inflammation across your body, including your arteries. This may induce the development of atherosclerotic plaques and lead to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. In short, gum disease can lead to heart disease. The severity of the gum infection has a direct relation with the risk of heart disease. So, do not take oral health lightly. If you see signs of gum disease, get treated immediately. Guard the health of your heart by guarding your gums against diseases.

The risk of oral infections is more significant for people with weak immune systems. Take steps to avoid oral infections and treat infections as soon as the symptoms become apparent. To minimize the risk of heart disease, worsened diabetes, and premature deliveries, do not ignore gum diseases. Prevention is better than cure, so take good care of your dental health. Healthy gums and teeth will keep certain complications and illnesses at bay.

Even if you are affected by severe infections, cavities, or any other scenario calling for surgical procedures, do not delay getting treatment. You don't have to worry about the pain during these procedures. Just ask for sedation dentistry procedure to make the treatment easy on you. There are always options; you just need to consider and choose. Do everything it takes to maintain good oral health.

Dentists have always advised patients to brush and floss regularly. Only recently have we begun to understand that behind this advice, there is more than just concern over dental health. You have all the more reasons to take extra care of your teeth and form good habits. These habits and efforts will go a long way towards protecting not only your dental health but also your overall health.
