Holistic Healing: 10 Ways to Manage Your Stress
Category: Health Yourself Written by Sierra Powell Views: 1177

It's no surprise that over the recent years people are reporting higher levels of stress than ever before. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to practice self-care and decrease your stress levels naturally and effectively. Following are ten holistic tips you can use to manage your stress and enjoy a greater sense of wellbeing.
1. Set Aside Time For Yourself
Do you tend to overbook your calendar and have a hard time saying no to people? This can create an imbalance in your work life and personal life, leading to increased feelings of stress. Don't be afraid to say no to an upcoming social gathering or optional work event once in a while. Your mental health is more important than being afraid of hurting someone's feelings.
2. Seek Professional Help
The last few years have taken a toll on everyone, so don't feel ashamed or embarrassed if you're finding it more difficult to complete everyday tasks. Seek out a qualified counselor to help you work through your difficulties and you'll be well on your way to better mental health.
3. Get Moving
Studies show that incorporating a regular workout into your routine can have a powerful effect on your mood by boosting your levels of endorphins and reducing the release of cortisol. Aim for thirty minutes of daily exercise for an instant mood boost.
4. Take Care of Your Hygiene
If there's one thing that tends to fall by the wayside during heightened times of stress, it's your hygiene routine. Not only is this detrimental to mental health, but increased levels of stress impact its appearance and can lead to skin issues and breakouts. Skin care is self care and should be an important part of your wellness routine, especially when you're stressed. Make sure you create a skin care routine as part of your morning or nightly ritual.
5. Spend Time Outdoors
Most people spend the majority of their time inside, especially during the workweek. Studies have shown that spending time outside regularly can boost vitamin D production, which is associated with elevated mood and a greater sense of wellbeing. Go for a short walk during your lunch break, or enjoy your lunch outside for some much-needed sun.
6. Journal for Stress Relief
Sometimes writing out whatever is bothering you is just what you need to clear your head. Journaling can also help you problem solve by inviting you to slow down and look at your problems objectively on paper. Try to write for at least five minutes at the end of your day as part of your evening routine. Journaling at night can help you slow your racing thoughts and prepare your body for a good night's sleep.
7. Practice Mindfulness With Meditation
Meditation can be one of the most powerful ways to deal with long-term stress. Meditation forces you to become aware of your breathing and naturally calms a worried mind. Search online for meditation tutorials or head to your local library and check out a few guides to meditation.
8. Spend Time With Your Pet
Your cat or dog may be the perfect way to help you manage your stress. Not only can pets ease loneliness and depression, but they also encourage you to exercise and can lower your blood pressure. If you've been thinking about getting a cat or a dog, now may be the perfect time to do so.
9. Watch Your Caffeine and Alcohol Intake
Caffeine and alcohol can both increase your blood pressure and are major sleep disruptors. Try to limit your consumption of both, especially alcohol. Alcohol has a "rebound effect," which may trigger your stress and anxiety.
10. Get Enough Sleep
You are more susceptible to stress and anxiety when you don't get enough sleep. Aim for at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Also, try not to scroll through your phone when you get into bed. The blue light is stimulating and can trigger bouts of insomnia. Try to read a book or listen to soothing music while you're winding down instead.
Stress is a normal part of everyday life. By utilizing these tips to reduce your stress and anxiety, you'll be well on your way to improving your mood and enhancing your quality of life.
