- Signs, Sabian Symbols, and What It All Means -
This article covers significant aspects, degree symbols, and other important factors in this New Moon chart. This is a beginning of the beginning, where past, present, and future overlap and many things will be re-evaluated on the basis of where we’re at on the evolutionary ladder. This continues our closure on old ghosts while opening to receiving rewards from Spirit.
The second decan of Aries is where we feel the heart power in a natural self expression of “Is-Be-Ness.” Get ready for a rapid acceleration of events, and mobilizing cheerfully guarantees major rewards. This Lunation is focused on powerful new initiatives which launch many things as we now move solidly into the second year of the dawning Aquarian era. This guides us to our Soul where we can see its trajectory through space and time, even if it’s not quite as grounded as it will be next year.
Long Term Effects of the Capricorn and Aquarius Compressions
We began multiple long wave Capricorn cycles in early 2020, and created more long wave Aquarian cycles between March and December 2020. If you want to know more about the four year sequence of The Great Compressions of Early 2020, 2021, and 2022, that article explains that in January through March 2020 we experienced the second of four consecutive compressions of planets. The first was in early 2019 when all the planets were bundled in about one third of the sky, called a Bundle pattern, which is the rarest of all. While the inner planets transited through all the other signs after that, we again hit maximum compression again in March 2020, and then expanded through the rest of the year.
This clustering happened again in 2021 in the last half of January into early February, with maximum compression was around January 19-21 when all of the planets were within a 101 degree span, creating a very intense zone of activity wherever we have late Capricorn through early Taurus. Four planets in Aquarius and two in Taurus made for a very crowded house, with 10 distinct energies occupying less than 1/3 of the total space.
We’re now moving into the final compression of the run with all the planets in this chart between Venus at 29 Capricorn and Uranus at 13 Taurus. This year we hit maximum compression in early March, with all planets between 28 Capricorn and 12 Taurus, only 104 degrees! As all the inner planets are still within that span, that area is most active in our charts at present. Though there will not be a compression in early 2023, there will be one more in early 2024.
Depending on the position of the Moon and the inner planets relative to the outer planets, different months bring us different Jones Patterns. These patterns operate their own independent influence, regardless of which planet is in which sign.
Currently, the outer planet occupied span begins with Pluto in late Capricorn, and proceeds through Saturn in Aquarius, Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces, and ends with Uranus in Taurus. (We don’t include TransPluto, since Jones didn’t use it in defining his patterns). Now that the inner planets are in Aquarius and Aries, they have been making conjunctions with all the outer planets, and will finish the run by May.
In this chart, we have a distinct cluster of the inner planets between late Aquarius and mid-Aries, with three clusters in a relatively short span. This New Moon continues the “Bundle” Jones patterns for several months which are happening except when the Moon is outside the occupied span.
The Bundle Pattern and how it works
This type of spread, with all the planets occupying approximately one third of the signs with two thirds unoccupied, creates “the least common of the seven basic differentiations,” and creates a “bunching of interests or the intensive self-gathering which is least responsive to any universal stimulus” and as Dr. Jones noted in a section on another pattern, a “special obsession with some particularly narrowed aspect of experience” which characterizes the Bundle people.
He continues that “the meaning of the concentration of the ten planets in one single third of the zodiac is that the course of the native’s life is held to certain narrow bounds of opportunism,” and they are “almost completely inhibited, in contrast with the outstanding lack of inhibition in the Splash pattern. He then goes on to say that “Characteristic of the Bundle type is an outstanding capacity for making much of little, or for building small beginnings into great and often unanticipated final results.” He also notes this type can mold their world “by some highly centralized force of self-concentration.” This type is not universal in the slightest, but rather “brings universe to center.”
With Pluto in Capricorn leading the concentration of planets, and thus the entry to the entire pattern, it shows we need to be transformationally disciplined and organized as we embrace our power “to read the tea leaves.” As Pluto is relentless in its purifying power, this is a time to note the seeds of the future, and use “Economy of Energy” as the means to bring forth “mutations from Cosmos” as per the Saturn degree ruling all the planets in the sky.
With Uranus in Taurus closing the Bundle, find ways to allow the disciplined execution of plans to ease the way to innovative ways to “cheerfully balance a mountain of baggage” as we “mobilize for gain.” Enjoy the revolution in how you view matter, and cultivate easy ways of synthesizing simple grounded energy to quicken your growth. This leads with individual, mental, and spiritual Group Performance, and closes with individual, mental, and spiritual Substantiation.
The Outer Planets Anchor the Pattern of A Third of the Sky
In 2020 Jupiter entered the outer planet occupied span, and will be there for several years. Last year it made multiple conjunctions with Pluto, expanding and purifying that powerful energy wherever we have late Capricorn in our charts. After Jupiter’s third and final conjunction with Pluto in November, Pluto again leads the outer planet occupied span for decades to come as that occupied span opens up after Jupiter conjuncts Uranus and moves into Gemini in 2024.
That means we’ll have “competing conjunctions” in the larger global tides, since those Capricorn conjunctions will be in play for quite a while, along with the Mars conjunct Saturn coupled with the Grand Mutation Jupiter conjunct with Saturn, both at 1 Aquarius. The Aquarian conjunctions launched a new 20 year and 200 year era, so take a look at how you organized, reorganized, or restructured your life in 2020 and see how you prepared to find power flowing to you and from you as we all move into a vaster tide of evolution related to long term Aquarian wave forms.
In this New Moon, as mentioned earlier, we have one large intense occupied span with three different sign energies. The first is Mars, Venus, and Saturn in Aquarius all within a 5+ degree span, the second is Jupiter plus Neptune in a 2+ degree span in Pisces, and the Lunation plus Mercury and Chiron all within a 2+ degree span. This month the inner planets are all concentrated between Mars at 20 Aquarius and the Lunation at 12 Aries, making that 51+ degree span the primary personal focus. Late Aquarius through mid-Aries will be VERY highly active these next 4 weeks.
The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon
A New Moon sets the seed forms for what the following month will demonstrate. This Lunation falls at 12 Aries, and it is said that the second third (decan) of any sign deals with the social, emotional, and cultural levels of life, and being the second decan of Aries it has a sub-influence of Leo with an added dose of the Sun. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth.
The Sabian Symbol we’ve been given for the 12th degree of Aries is “A flock of wild geese.” In the original notes from the Marc Jones class on the symbols Dane Rudhyar published in The Astrology of Personality, he states this degree is about “A soul as yet socially immature and unadjusted; not come down to full and steady concrete expression” and “self discovery.”
In his masterwork The Astrological Mandala,, Rudhyar offers this degree symbolizes the Hamsa, or the wild goose which is a metaphor for our Soul’s flight through space and time in a clear order with other geese also flying to their destiny. He speaks of “an idealistic reliance upon a mental image of universal order… an order made visual on the background of the clear sky. It is a ‘celestial’ type of order, even though it is earth-born birds which reveal it by their ability to keep their flight structured.”
He says “the symbol therefore refers to the Soul-consciousness as visualized by the heaven-oriented mind, where “the principle of Cosmic Order polarizes the all-too-human reliance on the social concept of law and order. He states that this symbol falls in the Span of Realization, the Act of Differentiation, and is the counterpoint degree of the Individual-Mental level of the Scene of Desire.
According to Dr. Jones, this degree is “a symbol of the irresistible aspiration and indomitable desire for freedom which represent the real core of personality, and which in everyday affairs are often the sole manifestation of an individual’s immortal potential.” He says while there may be “vagaries of immediate caprice to the point of irresponsibility,” he offers “through them is the undeviating course characteristic of the migratory fowl and so a promise of obligations to be met and ideals to be realized.”
He offers us the keyword INSOUCIANCE. He states when this degree is operating in a positive manner, we find “a completely naïve independence or an ever-immediate capacity for rising above any given involvement in experience.”
So the specific theme of the next month involves us “seeing the Light” of the trajectory of our immortal Self in harmony with and demonstrating our Oneness with Nature. This is the Light of pure freedom and an unerring flight path by the Soul to its higher potential. So see how your Life has aligned with “the Cosmic Order,” and enjoy the view as you fly free with other Souls in your “flight formation.”
Remember that in reading a Lunation chart (as well as a horary, inceptional, electional, or any event chart) the forming aspects show things to come, while separating aspects show things already past. Partile separating aspects show what’s been going on in the Now. This section covers only forming and partile separating aspects.
We’re now emerging from the heart of another great compression of planets as evidenced by 3 planets in Aquarius, 2 in late Pisces, and 3 in the first half of Aries. As a result, there are no aspects wider than a biseptile, and very few over a septile span.
The Lunation features the conjunction with Mercury and Chiron, with a semisquare to Venus, septiles to Mars and Saturn, a semisextile to Uranus, a vigintile to Neptune, and a quintile to Pluto; Mercury is semisquare Venus, conjunct the Sun, septile Mars, vigintile Jupiter, semisquare Saturn, elftile Uranus, vigintile Neptune, and quintile Pluto; Venus is semisquare the Sun and quindecile Jupiter; the Sun is septile Mars and Saturn, semisextile Uranus, vigintile Neptune, and quintile Pluto; and Mars is elftile Jupiter, conjunct Saturn, and elftile Neptune.
Outer planet aspects feature Jupiter semisextile Saturn, septile Uranus, conjunct Neptune, and septile Pluto; Saturn is binovile Uranus, semisextile Neptune, and quindecile Pluto; and Uranus is as usual septile Neptune and biseptile Pluto.
As you can see, there are no major frictional aspects, even if there are 4 semisquares! Some are waning, while some are waxing, showing the friction of the dissolution of the old cycle (waning) or the inner crisis of emergent choices (waxing).
Special Configurations in Evolutionary Astrology
This month because of so many interior angles, there are only two evolutionary configurations directly in play, the Grand Irrationality.
The first isn’t really a three point configuration, but rather a configuration involving multiple planets all making one big aspect to each other. That is of course the Lunation septile Mars conjunct Saturn, opening up a major “fork in the road of destiny” involving Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Aquarius activated wherever we have Aries and Aquarius in our charts. This configuration generates active hot zones around 18-24 Aquarius, 10-16 Aries, 1-7 Gemini, 23-29 Cancer, 14-20 Virgo, 6-12 Scorpio, and 27 Sagittarius-3 Capricorn.
The evolutionary configuration known as the Grand Irrationality is still on full display, being triggered by Jupiter. This month continues the blend of the first one via Neptune and the second, more hard-edged one via Uranus. The Uranus septile Neptune continues to generate voids in other signs which are triggered by transits and triggering choices and changes to any planets or points we have near any of the 7 affected “hot zones” around 27 Capricorn-2 Aquarius, 19-24 Pisces, 10-15 Taurus, 1-6 Cancer, 22-27 Leo, 13-18 Libra, and 5-10 Sagittarius. As noted, this month brings the Uranus biseptile Pluto back into full focus due to Jupiter making septiles to each!
This month we have a lot of spiritual aspects! In the various harmonic series, this month is a mixed bag. In the specialization harmonic series, we have 4 vigintiles, 2 quindeciles, and 3 quintiles. The 9th harmonic gives us 1 binovile. All novile series (9th harmonic) indicates things which need to be put on the shelf for a while, or that which has been gestating can now move forward. If you want to know more about this important “spiritual gestation” series which mark points of potential spiritual realization and integration, there are several articles in the archives.
This month we have 3 elftiles in the 11th harmonic series. In the nonrational septile series, we have a huge number, featuring EIGHT septiles and 1 biseptile. The 11th harmonic series indicate that faith is required to deal with transcending some dualities, and 7th harmonic aspects indicate forks in the road of destiny.
The novile (9th harmonic), septile (7th harmonic) and elftile (11th harmonic) series all feature spiritual aspects. All novile series aspects represent gestative energies that can lead to great spiritual realizations. Septile series aspects represent forks in the road of destiny, while the elftile series aspects represent issues and points of evolution where we confront the need to resolve some sort of duality by making a leap of faith to attain a form of mastery over that type of duality. This series tests our faith.
The quintile and biquintile (5th harmonic) and related 10th (decile and tredecile), 15th (quindecile), and 20th harmonic (vigintile) aspects are all specialization aspects. You can find more by going to Astrology Class on the Specializing Aspects Pt. 1 – The Quintile and Biquintile, and Astrology Class on the Specializing Aspects Part 2 – The Decile, Tredecile, Quindecile and the Vigintile.

Element Balance and Who’s Leading the Sun
This month shows a relative balance in the elements, with the 10 traditional planets occupying 5 signs and a balance between cold than hot. We have 3 planets in Fire (inspiration and warmth), 2 planets in Earth (practical grounding), 3 in Air (relatedness and communicating), and 2 in Water (feelings and experiencing). This month we have Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, and Taurus represented, with no planet in the other signs.
Air and Earth are “cool” elements, while Fire and Water are “hot” elements. With this distribution, it’s a perfect balance between heat and cool. With the return of Fire, this can lead us to inspired vision and vast feeling experiences. With the Lunation conjunct Mercury, the Guide of Souls, and all of them conjunct Chiron, the mentor which helps us heal into our Higher Self, follow the lightness and brightness into a greater Life.
Because the New Moon falls in mid-Aries, Mercury in Aries is the “Gateway to the Light.” This helps us see many things from our past differently, finding different meaning in what once were “emotion arousing images.” Follow your vision into a new identity, but don’t get impatient with the process.
The current sequence at present of Deciding, Feeling, and Thinking
We’ve been through several different sequences over the past few months. There are six patterns, and each has their strengths and weaknesses. This Lunation continues last month’s pattern which will shift several times in the next few weeks due to Venus and Mercury now in direct motion. For now, as a process of moving through events, the most effective “firing sequence” for approaching life and experience over the next 4 weeks involves leading with our feeling, and then thinking, and then making decisions at the end of the process.
This is a time to enter experience with a sense of feeling what we’re experiencing, or who we’re with. This pattern holds back until it has moved its feeling into a vision or an understanding. This pattern leads with feelings, and then seeks information to confirm or deny those feeling impressions. It feels its way into ideas, visions, interactions, and understanding.
However, once we’ve felt our way to a vision or understanding, then it will be important to make a decision and act on it. Once we’ve moved everything forward that one step, then a new feeling-experience will naturally arise that points the way to the next view or information needed to again move it forward one step.
So feel, flow, experience, since these will lead you to information and understanding. When your understanding leads to a clear vision, then see the fundamental fact, or act that must be done to move it all one step forward. Let your feeling and experience follow your actions, and let your mind follow your feelings into new views and understanding that can help you make decisions that you’ll act on.
This New Moon in Aries begins major new activity as we take the Aquarian impulse into the world as an idealistic vision. Because Pisces is still so strong, we’re still being given harvest for our faith, compassion, empathy, and ability to see and feel a vaster tide lifting all of us to prepare for a future which is coming like an express train. We’ve renewed the Aquarius vision and/or our sense of how to contribute spiritually to the emerging era, and the coming weeks requires we show strength as well as compassion as we go through the birth of a new focus.
Venus and Mars renewed the Capricorn and Aquarius cycles set into motion in 2020, and have now set new Aquarius cycles into motion via the recent Venus conjunction with Saturn and the coming Mars conjunction with Saturn. We’re still experiencing a very crowded house wherever we have Aquarius, Pisces, and Aries in our charts! Suppose you had a boat with 12 rooms, and suddenly 8 people showed up in only three of them. All of this happening with a dreamscape getting denser by the minute, with thick fog rolling in and the need to navigate by instinct rather than visual references. The next few weeks bring lessons related to the training we’ve been in since Autumn 2021 related to our coming need to utilize spiritual power effectively.
Welcome to the next few weeks, and remember this is a time to surrender to the larger tide and purify however you need to!
Because Jupiter is racing through Pisces, learn how to flow within the uncertainty, the expanded feelings, the sense of universal emotions running the gamut from sorrow to ecstasy. Its degree in this Lunation indicates the next four weeks we’ll know our success at meeting a newer, higher life order, so keep forgiving and releasing whatever you need to.
Pisces is where we feel all there is to feel, for better or worse. Just remember that sometimes what you’re feeling can’t be taken personally, and should be regarded as your inner “witness conscience” feeling something which needs compassion or forgiveness.
During the coming few months many who have trained will begin to be able to “know at a distance,” and send compassionate thoughts to those who need it. If circumstances warrant it, be willing to find silent or unobtrusive ways to bless the endings for those who are most afraid of letting go.
In 2020 we entered a transition phase in human history. While we still have to function within the Capricorn cycles we began in 2020, we also have crossed the threshold of an era unknown to humanity since the 13th and 14th centuries. Even then, we were still in the depth of the Age of Pisces, so the awakening of new ideas then were relative to the old era, whereas what’s coming involves wave after wave of Aquarian energies, pushing us to the coming Great Age emerging in the second half of this century.
The long wave Aquarian pulses were initially set into motion by the Mars conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius on March 31, 2020, marking the initiation of archetypal Aquarian preliminary structures offered by Saturn. The promise and potential of the new Aquarian pulse then began to expand into a greater social and cultural vision beginning at the Jupiter conjunction with Saturn, the Grand Mutation of the Solstice also at 1 Aquarius. So we have 20 years of Aquarian energies set into motion by that conjunction!
Of note is that Venus and Mars conjuncted at 1 Aquarius in March 2022, giving a new impetus and new expression to the Aquarian structures which took shape in 2021. After that, the next time Mars transits Aquarius will be in February and March 2024, when it conjuncts Pluto at 1 Aquarius in February about 3 weeks after Pluto’s first ingress into Aquarius. That begins the Pluto in Aquarius “generation” of the 21st century which lasts until 2043. As there will be a Jupiter conjunction with Pluto at 15 Aquarius in 2033, we’ll see the “expansion of the Angels of the Age of Aquarius” at that time.
2021 opened a new adventure for all of us, and the long term “metamorphosis” we went through showed us what the beginning of the coming Age of Aquarius is about. Last year helped us remember we are Beings of Light, a Superstar shining the Light of our Eternal Love into our world. We’re now expanding that promise and we’ll see developments related to this evolutionary leap beginning this month.
Last year’s Solar Eclipses have helped us all turn a Cosmic Corner and move in a new direction. We’ve “lowered one flag and raised a new one” and will continue to do so for many months and years. The “Cosmic Recycler” quality of the 2019 and 2020 Cancer eclipses are helping remove old habits and sentimentalities, and many things which used to be familiar patterns in our lives have ended, are ending, or will end.
Both the Cancer and Sagittarius eclipses of 2020 are removing all we do not need in our Cancer and Sagittarius response in the houses they fell in. The Sag Eclipse is removing all which blocks our happiness, and I’m certainly looking forward to the restoration of more humor, more freedom, more largeness of vision, and greater truths and futures promised as old obsolete Sag forms are taken away. The December 2021 Sag eclipse reinforced the December 2020 Sag eclipse while giving us a rebirth of love. June’s eclipse is removing old Gemini responses, and will purify our life and mind while repressed material comes up and claims its due.
New groups of Spiritual communities formed last year and will continue to form this year, and those which are Aquarian in nature were “lifted on the wings of angels” in 2021. Trust the process. We are learning not to play to the generic confusion, irrationality, and misleading notions. Revolution is in the air! And when you find things and people of eternal worth, value them with all your heart.
Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend
Saturn continues its long term occupancy in its home sign of Aquarius. While we’ll still be focused on the group work set into motion last year, we are now experiencing Saturn’s late Aquarius qualities. Saturn continues to be the final dispositor of all planets transiting Capricorn and Aquarius from now through 2023. It was a major influence in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 Eclipses, continuing its years-long power behind events.
Because Saturn plays such a large part in ruling the stage of Life for many months and even years to come, if you haven’t gotten your copy already, please give yourself the timeless gift of my book, Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend. We all need to make friends with our inner Saturn if we would claim our power to fulfill our higher purpose as Spirits in the material world.
Saturn helps us give form and structure to our quest for Self-realization. We are learning to use the “organized personal structure” built in Capricorn last year as we move into our greater Aquarian group work to concretize a spiritual ideal for the future, with an eye to the greatest good for the greatest number. We now approach how to structure our individual Soul energy to make our spiritual life come alive.
This book shows you the way to take command of your power to steer your life in a conscious way, using Saturn’s strengths and skills to be led to mastering life on your own terms. It was written for both astrologers and non-astrologers, and will help you understand how your life experiences assisted your Soul growth and your power to turn away from negative karmic cause and effect patterns. Each time you re-read any part of it you’re sure to find undiscovered gems of insight helping you throw off attitudes which frustrate your ability to live your higher Purpose on your own terms.
At this point, as long as we’re discussing my books, I want to introduce you to my newest book The Magic of Venus: Friendships, Soul Mates, and Twin Flames. It was just published, and is a comprehensive look at who we are and why we like the people and things we do. It offers insights about why we attract who we do, why things take the turns they do, and how to create better relationships in the future. We explore qualities which make for long lasting personal relationships and friendships and why Soul Mates come into our lives, and how to know the difference between a Soul Mate and our Twin Flame.
It has chapters on the qualities of each sign’s natural mate, the qualities of Venus in each sign, and when crucial choices and changes are made, affecting who we attract in the future. It was written for both astrologers and lay people, and as it has a thousand gems for better relationships, with self, others, and Source, please consider getting your copy by going to the link above! (And when you’re done, please leave a review on Amazon, since it helps the book and all other books on astrology as well!)
