As I was nosing through some of my older posts, I realized I have written many ways for Empaths to block the emotional energy of others, but I have not got one post that is specifically dedicated to just that.
So, today, I present you with some of the top ways to block the emotions you may pick up from others. The techniques also work in balancing your own emotions. A win-win situation for Empath wellbeing.
As you may already know, Empaths tend to have an overactive Amygdala, which, when one is experiencing uncomfortable emotions, activates the stress hormones. Read more on the subject here.
The problem is, when an Empath is around people, whether in the home or out and about, they can pick up their stressed emotions and take them on as their own. This in turn activates the Amygdala.
Constant Amygdala activation can compromise one’s mental and physical health. Which is something we want to avoid at all costs. This is why it is so important to work to keep our emotions in check. Whether that be our own or those we pick up.
16 Ways to Block the Emotions of Others
The following techniques can be used daily, before, during or after venturing into public places. Experiment with them to see which works best for you.
Also, remember that protective techniques work best when they are swapped and changed. It tends to keep them more effective.
- Take a Friend:
Taking a friend, when venturing into busy places, who you like being in the company of, acts as a buffer. It helps diffuse the emotional energies of those around you, so they don’t have as much impact. It also serves as a pleasant distraction and takes your mind off what you are feeling.
- Power Poses:
Holding a power pose for a couple of minutes before leaving home, or entering an energy-hostile environment, serves in uplifting and expanding one’s energy field. This helps in blocking the energy of others.
A power pose is generally anything that opens up the body. They can be as simple as opening up one’s arms wide (so your body is in the shape of a cross) and taking long slow breaths through the nose. Holding a gentle smile is further empowering.
If you are familiar with yoga, a Starfish pose (standing with wide legs and arms) is ideal, as is a Warrior pose with open arms.
- Crystal Vibes:
Another great way to protect from the emotional energy of others is to get your crystals out. Carry them with you when in busy places, hold them on the area where you are feeling strong emotions, or wear them as jewelry.
To block the emotional energy of others, or to take back control of your emotions, use your grounding crystals, such as Black Tourmaline, on your third eye.
To soothe your heart, after feeling the pained emotions of others, use comforting stones like Rose Quartz.
To protect your Solar Plexus area (mid-stomach) from the negative emotions of others, use Citrine.
- Grounding Visualizations:
These could be anything from visualizing roots coming from your feet, grounding you to the earth, to mentally building a halo of white light around your body and expanding it with your breath. Almost as though you are pumping up your light body with every exhale you take.
If you are in a busy peopled place, and you are getting overwhelmed by the energy around you, try to find a seat and take a few minutes to perform a grounding visualization. They can work wonders for blocking energy.
Positive mini-declarations repeated in the mind can serve in being uplifting, empowering, protective and distracting. Statements such as: ‘I am empowered ‘or ‘I am in control’, instantly, and positively, changes your mind-set, and your vibration, and thus make you better equipped to handle excessive external energies.
Find an affirmation that works for you, suitable for the time and place.
- Get Near Trees:
If you want to block the emotions coming from others, spend as much time around trees as you can. Gaze upon them or just get up close and allow their healing energy to infuse with your own. This not only helps block emotional energy of others, it also takes you to a place of calm and healing.

Sound affects us on many levels energetically. Yogis have used the power of sound for thousands of years, through chanting and singing, because they know of its incredible cleansing and uplifting power.
Try it when you feel an incoming energy storm and see how it changes your vibration.
- Get in the Music Zone:
Taking your favourite music and earphones is a huge help, when out and about, for blocking emotional energy.
Listening to the music you love creates an inner-expansion. It uplifts your energy and creates a protective ‘bliss bubble’ around you. This energy expansion enables you to glide through public-places seemingly unaffected.
It is generally best to get into the ‘music zone’ before entering a peopled place.
- Salt Therapy:
Taking salt baths, can be incredibly calming and soothing for the body and mind. They work in both clearing the auric field, and can also work as an energy blocker.
Even better, if you live near an ocean, taking a daily dip can work wonders for blocking emotions and soothing anxiety. This post gives more details.
- Mirrored Energy Ball of Light:
Surrounding yourself in a healing ball of light (in your mind’s eye) is a great way to protect yourself from the energy of others. Every morning see yourself engulfed in a huge vibrant mirrored ball of protection. Believe it’s there and know it is protecting you from the energy of others (great when used in conjunction with crystals).
There are many grounding and mind quietening methods available, such as meditation, that need a committed daily practice to reap the full benefits. However, certain breathing methods can be used as emotional energy blockers as and when needed.
You may need to play around with different breathing techniques to find the one which works best for you. They can be used before entering, or whilst in, a busy place. And no one need know that you are performing them.
Relaxation is so important when it comes to Empath protection.
When we are wired, tired or stressed we not only attract back more reasons to feel bad, but stress impacts our health more than anything. It weakens our defenses and our energy field. Which basically means we are more vulnerable to external emotions.
Finding time to relax, or do things that lead to relaxation, is more beneficial to blocking the emotional energy of others than you probably might realize.
Think about the things that relax you. Could it be going for a swim, yoga or exercise, being out on your bike, taking time in a sauna or hot tub, or sitting in meditation?
If you make time every day, even for ten minutes, for relaxation, it will switch on your parasympathetic system and keep you protected from the emotional energy of others.
- Raise Your Spirits:
Another fantastic way to block emotional energy from impacting you, is by doing anything that makes your spirits soar.
Read or watch inspirational or uplifting material. Listen to empowering music that makes your heart sing. Feast your eyes on natural beauty, or simply get outdoors to a place you love.
Earthing is an incredible technique that helps block the emotional energy of others. It involves placing naked feet on natural earth and allowing the energy to cleanse and protect your own.
We often take for granted the extraordinary healing power of Mother Earth, but connecting with her is one of the easiest ways for the Empath to stay protected and to find balance.

- Sage Essential Oil:
Sage has been used for centuries for energy clearing, which makes it the perfect oil for Empath protection.
Using Sage essential oil (always pre-mixed in a carrier oil) when out and about or when with overly negative people, is super-effective for mopping up any emotional energy that may be lingering.
- Check Your Diet:
And finally, if you have tried all the energy blocking techniques listed here, and more, and you still get badly affected by other people’s emotional energy, it could come down to the fact you are eating foods that are affecting your wellbeing.
Consuming foods that do not agree with you, weakens your whole system and overly opens you up to the energy of others. Which basically means it will be harder to protect yourself.

As I have said in many other posts, and in my books, ensuring you are in good health works in being protective. It is often when we are out of balance, in our wellbeing, that we are worst affected by the emotions of others.
