4 Powerful benefits of positive attitude and how to develop it

Earl-Nightingale

“Our attitude toward life determines life’s attitude towards us.”-- Earl Nightingale, American motivational speaker and author.

Attitude, whether negative or positive, basically comprises thought patterns or habits which determine how we react to people, situations and events. Thought patterns are a kind of energy vibrations that charge our entire being.

Our thought patterns and feelings manifest themselves through our facial expressions-- in fact, through the body language. They travel beyond our body and charge the environment in which we live and work and reach out to the people we interact with.

A positive attitude generates vibes of happiness, hope, geniality and light in the hour of darkness. More than that, it finds better side of seemingly ugly situations   and people.

4 benefits of positive attitude

1. Immensely useful in mending broken relationships

Going by this interpretation, positive attitude can be of immense help in mending the broken relationships which is one of the foremost causes of misery for a majority of people.

One of the foremost causes of break up in relationships is that we just see the faults or vices of our love or marriage partners. We become blind to their good points or virtues either intentionally out of ego or unintentionally because of the lack of positive attitude.

A positive attitude helps us to look for the better side of the nature and personality of our partners and assist them to strengthen those qualities.

While a person with a negative attitude generally criticises his/her partner for their perceived mistakes and ignores their positive qualities, a person with a positive attitude praises their partner profusely by telling them how they love them for those qualities, how valuable they are and how they might feel incomplete without them.

Here are two beautiful and inspiring quotes to illustrate the point:

When others do nothing but to criticize and complain, you focus on the good in people, you look beyond the surface and the labels. You focus on what can be done not on what was and on what is, you create a new reality for yourself and those around you. You break the rules and you show the world how IMPOSSIBLE can become I’M POSSIBLE—Unknown

I always advise people to focus on what they love and not on what they hate, to look for the good in people instead of the bad, to act as they would love to be not as others tell them they should, for what we focus on expands and “what we resist, not only persists but will also grow in size.” - Carl Jung.

2. Positive attitude for health and well-being

A positive attitude helps us develop healthy qualities of head and heart such as love, patience, empathy, confidence, balance and compassion as against negative attitude that may breed jealousy, hatred, anger, fear, frustration and disappointment that are detrimental to our health and well-being. With positive attitude we can thus not only remain happy but also help our loved ones  to enjoy the same state of mind.

3.  Positive attitude generates courage, enthusiasm and confidence

Positive attitude generates courage, enthusiasm and confidence in our abilities to achieve our dream-goals. We love to work hard with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm. It would be pertinent to quote Leah LaBelle here: If somebody puts you down or criticizes you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive.”

4. Works like powerful mantra

As mentioned above attitude, whether positive or negative, is built on our thoughts that continue to reverberate in our brain or heart. They thus act as affirmations or mantras and depending upon their nature, they bring us failure or success, happiness or sadness, health or sickness.

Here are four inspiring quotes on the power of affirmations

1. “Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.”-- Buddha

willie-nelson

2. “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results.” Willie  Nelson.

3. “Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and shadows will fall behind you.” ― Walt Whitman

4.Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. Constantly color your picture gray, and your picture will always be bleak. Try adding some bright colors to the picture by including humor, and your picture begins to lighten up.
Allen Klein

How to develop positive attitude

Developing positive attitude is a matter of personal choice. The best way to nurture positive attitude is to give up negative attitude.

But how can we do that, you may ask

You should pay attention to your thoughts. Sift out the negative thoughts  from the positive ones. Try to get rid of the negative and hold on to the positive thoughts and try to strengthen them further.

To illustrate the point-imagine that you are carrying a heavy object in your hands and that is causing you pain. The only way to get rid of pain is to throw away the object , relieve your hands of the painful burden  and let them carry fragrant flowers instead.

Likewise you have to make your mind give up the negative attitude and pick up positive attitude in its place.

Beware

Sometimes,  negative attitude becomes so strong that it becomes difficult to give it up.

A man, wrapped in a heavy blanket  cried for help as he was drowning in a river. A bystander on the bank advised him to get rid of the blanket as its weight might be drowning him.

The hapless drowning man lamented: I want to get rid of the blanket, but the blanket does not leave me. The truth was that the blanket had become  so saturated with water and become so heavy that it became difficult for the man to shake it off.

The same is true of the negative attitude. If not given up early it becomes so strong in course of time that it becomes difficult to get rid of it.

Here are some excerpts from a beautiful poem “You Chose”  by Shannon L. Alder

You chose to give away your love.
You chose to have a broken heart.
You chose to give up.
You chose to hang on.

You chose to react.
You chose to feel insecure.
You chose to feel anger.
You chose to fight back.
You chose to have hope.

You chose to be naïve.
You chose to ignore your intuition.
You chose to ignore advice.
You chose to look the other way.
You chose to not listen.
You chose to be stuck in the past.

You chose your perspective.
You chose to blame.
You chose to be right.
You chose your pride.
You chose your games.
You chose your ego.
You chose your paranoia.
You chose to compete.
You chose your enemies.
You chose your consequences.

And Now!

Choose to let go.
Choose dignity.
Choose to forgive yourself.
Choose to forgive others.
Choose to see your value.
Choose to show the world you’re not a victim.
