Happy New Year!

Even though I believe that your personal new year is your birthday, we’ll go with the social calendar for now.

What do you expect from your New Year? Will it be magical? Will it stay the same? Will it offer promise of reward if you work hard(er)?

It All Hinges On Your Words

Words are powerful tools for healing (or harm). You can create harmony with them or chaos.

Sometimes when people talk you have to navigate their intentions and read between the lines!

Huh? Did they just say that on purpose?

Did they mean that?

What the heck do they mean?

Or consider the words you have rolling around in your head without ever letting them slip from your lips. 

You sit in front of an acquaintance and they talk about their child as if their child were the only amazing child in the world. Where does your mind go?

You stand at the checkout and listen to the guy in front of you complain about how slow the cashier is. Does this prompt you to agree OR to smile at the cashier and tell her to take her time?

Maybe you’re in your car in a rush and someone with 4 inch spectacles pulls in front of you and looks around as if they’re taking a walk in the park. You have an immediate flash of anger, choose compassion, and take your foot off of the accelerator to slow down.

Maybe you see how your REACTIONS stop you from having peace in your day.

Oh, wait. I almost forgot to mention the emoticons in our current culture. According to the Global Language Monitor, a new word or emoticon is invented every 98 minutes. What? That’s almost insane.

When not long ago, written and spoken words MEANT something. They carried a resonance of healing and of love.

Literary advancements marveled over words, too. How they sounded. Their origins. What they implied.

The ancient language of Sanskrit was spoken as a testament to Divinity. Each word had a frequency and was felt by the person receiving the message. (That actually still happens, but this world is buzzing so fast, that vowels are omitted in the interest of speed of communication instead of meaning and you’re lost to the feeling of words.)

Guess what the most recognized word on THE PLANET is? Go ahead… take a guess. I asked others what they thought and they said, “Sex. Money. Dad. Mom. Yes. No.” Nope. None of those. It’s…

Imagine that!

As you begin your New Year, consider finding one moment of compassion for the cashier—who most likely earns minimum wage, can’t afford health insurance, and honestly believes this is IT for the rest of his life—and smile. Let them know they’re doing a great job.

Use your words to make someone’s day. Then imagine how those words stop cancer from spreading.

Or how that moment of verbal compassion helps someone last until they get their break at 4:15 without going insane.

Use your words to express yourself in a healthy way and the only thing that can come of it is a world without pain. 

Look around right now as you’re reading this. Is there is someone near you? Stop reading and tell them that you think they look great in that color. Or that they’re doing a fantastic job making your latte.

And if you’re alone, stand in front of a mirror and say to yourself aloud, “I think you’re extraordinary!”

Do this and watch what happens to your body, to your feelings.

Spread some sparkly love over your words, even if they never escape your lips.
