As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.
The Overview for February
This year the month of February brings lots of forward momentum! It is the beginning of three months where all the planets are in direct motion and either speeding up or moving at a good pace. The retrogrades of December and January are done, and we can now take our insights, hind sights, reviews and rehearsals into the future!
The month kicks off with a New Moon on “the Barometer” degree, indicating we’ll all be focused on our inner changes to feel what’s coming in the future. This Lunation also begins the Chinese New Year of the Water Tiger, sure to be a combative fluid energy after last year’s Metal Ox reliability! Of course, the Water Tiger is also known for its charm, determination, balance, and ability to entertain others. Virtuous and regal in its responses, this year will favor the righteous and be difficult for those who are not.
We’re now in the next “grand compression” of planets as the inners occupy the outer planet span between late Capricorn and mid-Taurus. The next few weeks we’ll have a crowded house where we have Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces, because all the visible planets are in those signs. The coming compression of planets this month and March are creating a Bundle Jones pattern when the Moon is inside the occupied span January 29-February 9 and February 26-March 8. We’ll have a Bowl Jones pattern just before and after these spans, this month specifically between Feb 9-15 and Feb 22-26. You can find out more about the Bundle and Bowl patterns at my Aquariuspapers website linked below.
Saturn is now out of its Shadow Zone and beginning to crystallize all that Jupiter promised when it transited this span of degrees in Aquarius in late February and early March 2021. We’re now moving into a span where we’re learning how to manage our energies, preparing for a time of “picking up and delivering spiritual power” beginning in late May.
This period should be very good for a more perfect expression of natal planets we have in the middle degrees of all the signs, since Saturn favors that span in Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, and Jupiter favors that span in Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. Add the very favorable aspects from Mars and Venus the first half of the month, and it should be a time of stability, understanding, and grounded organized ordered activity, with the Sun illuminating the Aquarius promise of last year.
Because Saturn is in forward motion, we’re still learning Saturnian lessons related to its direct station at “a child born out of the Cosmic Egg,” promising manifestations from Cosmos not “born of a local tradition!” When we couple this with last year’s Saturn retrograde theme of direct accomplishment and an acceleration of our evolutionary potential once we have a vision, a plan, and a good time to execute the procedure, we’re now learning how to manage making all of this real in our lives. As Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, those parts of our chart are where we’re now moving into a new expression of “Cosmos” and a new sense of what we’re here to accomplish which fulfills our purpose.
Planets Slowing Down and Shifting Signs
February begins with Mercury going stationary direct after giving us a look back at all the Capricorn cycles set into motion in 2020. As it’s direct on the degree where Jupiter conjuncted Pluto, you can bet there will be developments related to those themes over the next few months! Both Venus and Uranus are speeding up after their recent direct stations, and now that Mercury’s direct it too will accelerate and again rejoin the Aquarian party in mid-month.
This month only Mercury and the Sun change signs, so enjoy the relative consistency in the rest of the planetary sign expressions. This indicates Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, will give us two sign experiences (Capricorn and Aquarius), and the Sun, ruler of Leo and Cancer, will give us two (Aquarius and Pisces). With Venus and Mars in Capricorn and Jupiter in Pisces all month, this clearly indicates a lot of activity in the Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces sectors of our charts!
Mars in Capricorn is said to be “exalted,” or in the sign of its greatest growth, since Mars benefits greatly from Capricorn’s organization and sense of responsibility. This month we have the first of two Venus/Mars conjunctions in a short span of time, softening it and giving it a more pleasing expression. While in Capricorn, Mars is ruled by Saturn in mid-Aquarius, making Mars more idealistic and visionary, and as it transits all three decans of Capricorn this month, we’ll get more of a Capricorn energy the first week, more of a Taurus energy the second and third weeks, and more of a Virgo energy the last week of the month.
Between February 1 and 8, Mars will prove agitating to those with planets between 6-10 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Between February 8 and 20, it will agitate planets between 10-20 of the Cardinal signs. Between February 20-28 it will agitate planets between 21 and 26 of those signs.
In February Mars makes relatively few aspects. It begins the month with a productive sextile to Jupiter, a specializing quintile to Neptune, and a trine to Uranus. This opens up VERY favorable energies for any planets we have in the early and middle degrees of Earth and Water signs. As Mars is moving faster than Venus, it makes a forming conjunction all month which is exact the first time in mid-month at 17 Capricorn which then leads to the second one in early March after Venus speeds up and catches Mars at 1 Aquarius.
This month shows NO frictional aspects to/from Mars except by the Moon. The last 10 days of the month Mars is septile Jupiter, sextile Neptune, and tredecile Uranus. This promises productive activity for planets around 21-25 Earth and Water, courageous spiritual turning points for planets around 19-23 Capricorn, 11-15 Pisces, 3-7 Taurus, 24-28 Gemini, 15-19 Leo, 7-11 Libra, and 28 Scorpio-2 Sagittarius. Unusual interactive good luck will be experienced by those with planets or points near 1-2 Pisces/Virgo, 4-8 Aries/Libra, 10-14 Taurus/Scorpio, 16-20 Gemini/Sagittarius, 22-26 Cancer/Capricorn, and 28-30 Leo/Aquarius.
As I’ve offered before, when Mars is within a degree of forming or separating while making a hard aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force, with an eye to moderating or antidoting impulsiveness and impatience. Mars in Capricorn renews the long wave cycles it set into motion March of 2020, particularly in late February and March of 2022.
This month the sign focus is primarily Capricorn the first half of the month, shifting into a blend of Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces the last half of the month. Wherever we have these signs will be our primary concern through the March 20 Equinox, after which Aries will loom large on the landscape.
The Aquarius-Taurus Tension This Year
We’ve finally left the year of intense Saturn-Uranus squares which challenged our ability not to get stuck in useless conflicts while focusing on what’s really important and letting go of all which would distract us. We were all put through a lot of pressure wherever we had 11-17 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, and though Uranus is still in that sector, Saturn has now moved past the square until August, when it will again be square Uranus through early December. This month the only friction involving Saturn and/or Uranus is seen only in late February, when Mercury squares Uranus.
Last year we had three squares from Saturn to Uranus; one from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus, another with Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus at 14 Taurus, and a third with Saturn direct at 12 Aquarius and Uranus retrograde at 12 Taurus. These waning (upper) squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus mark the culmination of the cycle set into motion with Saturn conjunct Uranus in 1988. Interestingly, in 1999-2000 Saturn in Taurus made its waxing (lower) square to Uranus in Aquarius, so last year activated conflicts dating back 20 years.
We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set
The Grand Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius began a new 20 year Aquarian Era in December 2020, as well as a new 200 year Era, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. We’ve begun to grow beyond the materialism of the past 200 years and have entered two centuries of Air emphasis, with its qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals. This month Mercury brings us the third set of signs and signals related to that emergent energy in mid-month as a prelude to the coming Venus conjunction with Mars at 1 Aquarius in early March.
The 2020 Solar eclipse on the Summer Solstice is still facilitating a grand reorientation in our lives, including an acceptance of new allegiances and life directions, and the December 2020 Solar eclipse at 24 Sagittarius is still helping us remove blocks to our happiness. The June Solar eclipse at 20 Gemini is already removing irrelevant and extraneous ideas and considerations from our decision making process, and the extremely beneficial Total Solar Eclipse at 13 Sagittarius in early December gave us a promise of major gifts and unique interactive opportunities which will be perfect for whatever we need. Rewards are coming these next 4 years!
We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 and 13 Sagittarius, and 20 Gemini, since 1 Cancer aligns us with a larger reality, 24 Sagittarius helps us find happiness, 13 Sagittarius gives us a new identity and love, and 20 Gemini removes what cannot be assimilated or communicated.
The mid-June Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini continues to shut down parts of our lives in that sector for 5 years to come. All the eclipses in Gemini and Sagittarius are removing old ideas, old perspectives, old truths, and old futures. The recent Lunar Eclipse at 28 Taurus/Scorpio will remove blockages to our ability to connect with source and find genuine rejuvenation these next few months. All in all, these are some very favorable eclipses wherever they fall in our charts!
As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.
The Grand Irrationality
In February the 7-pointed “Star of Destiny" I’ve termed The Grand Irrationality will be triggered by Mercury in the first half of the month as it biseptiles Uranus and septiles Neptune! This should bring us new information about events of late December when Mercury first activated this configuration, helping us anticipate when it is triggered at the end of February by Venus and Mars making the same aspects. As you know by now, these aspects represent phases of extraordinary choice and change, affecting individuals and nations wherever the seven zones in the configuration occur in our charts.
All the septile-series 7th harmonic aspects trigger crucial choices and changes at “forks in the road of destiny.” I have written extensively about “The Grand Irrationality” which has been active for many years at this site and why all of humanity is forging its future destiny at this time. If you have a planet or point near any of the seven zones, your life is sure to be affected. In February these zones are around 28 Capricorn – 2 Aquarius, 19-23 Pisces, 10-14 Taurus, 4-8 Cancer, 25-29 Leo, 16-20 Libra, and 7-11 Sagittarius.
When things seem irrational and don’t make much sense, there’s always a septile-series aspect in the mix. During the periods these 7th harmonic aspects are in play, if things get weird or crazy, be clear about the choices you’re making. While a lot won’t “make sense,” it doesn’t have to; just be clear about what you’re doing and why. Even though there may be interactions with unreasonable or irrational people, we still have the power to respond in productive ways.
As with “hard” aspects to and from Mars, if that planet (or really any planet) is involved in any non-rational aspect, whether one to our natal Mars or transiting Mars making a non-rational aspect to one of our natal, progressed, or solar return planets, it’s a time to be cautious during the period when the aspect is within a degree of forming or separating. Things have a way of getting strange during 7th harmonic aspects, so those are times to be especially deliberate and thoughtful in choosing our responses.
Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month
February begins with a New Moon at 13 Aquarius, putting the spotlight on that house in our charts. As this New Moon conjuncts Saturn, you can bet all things Aquarian will be the focus of the entire month! Just after that Mercury goes direct, marking a point where many things will feel like they’re moving forward after a period of delays, returns, and reconsideration of all things Capricorn we’ve been through these past 2 years. This is a very favorable New Moon with Mars sextile Jupiter, so take advantage of the very favorable aspects during the first week of the month. The entire first half of the month features Mars trine Uranus, favoring innovation, renovation, and all things new which can help reorganize our practical tasking. The second week of the month also shows Mercury making its third conjunction with Pluto in the past few weeks, giving us some final signs and signals about our depth-understanding and helping us see deeper hidden forces at work, both within and without. There are some very favorable aspects made during the first half of February, so make the most of it, since February 14 brings Mercury’s re-entry into Aquarius, putting the focus on a new understanding of the Grand Mutation.
Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month
The third week of the month brings us the Full Moon with its themes of openness to potentiality and preparing for future conditions. This brings the first of two conjunctions of Venus with Mars, and because it falls in the Taurus decan of Capricorn, both planets are in very beneficial territory! The third week of February also brings the exact Jupiter sextile Uranus indicating tremendous productivity throughout the entire month, as well as the Sun in the Transfiguration Zone at the end of Aquarius, slipping into Pisces and illuminating the cusp of the Great Age between February 16-18.
The last week of the month is dominated by Venus and Mars both sextile Neptune, assisting us to see how to navigate the collective fog with maturity and organization. Mercury also sextiles Chiron and squares Uranus, providing release for Uranian genius through healing and mentoring initiatives. Uranus is strengthened by a sextile from the Sun, so what is built by the Sun is released through Mercury. The final few days of the month are during the Old Moon, showing a time of completion and harvest before entering the next New Moon period at the beginning of March which indicates a need for courage as we focus our “Spiritual Will.”
This is the first month of the North Node in Taurus era! We’re now done with our time of evolving in the sign of learning and communicating, and begin a time of our greatest development coming through the sign of appreciation, value, and enjoying the best life has to offer.
Because Saturn is still so strong on the stage of life, keep demonstrating patience and vision based in how you’ve lightened and brightened your life where you have Aquarius in your chart. The first half of February it brings the challenge of training our “protective mechanisms” as we rest after our “gold strike,” and the second half of the month features an unveiling leading us to circumstances which will force us to rise to some occasion to bring something under control by the end of the month.
We’ve now been through a year of non-stop friction of the Taurus/Aquarius square which has brought us to a new inspired vision achieved through group cooperation. We’ve gotten our inner spiritual warrior in shape in a time of showing heart, taking heart, trusting the heart, strengthening the heart, and radiating the Love we ARE to our world, expressed through a conscious focus, concentration, and intention. Having achieved that to whatever degree we could, this month allows us to move our “expansive compassion” into the social and spiritual realms. Just remember with Jupiter racing through Pisces, it is a season of saying goodbye quickly while preparing for a deeper understanding of our connectedness with all of life. And remember we're all more aware, capable, and stronger together than we are separately.
The Sun in Aquarius is a time to see the Light of a greater group work and ideal which will serve as a spiritual touchstone for those who follow. This is powering up the next stage of the emergent Aquarian energy. We are now in the second year of the new Aquarian era, and having moved through three phases of “graduation into a new realm of Being,” we can now willingly embrace our role as a unique spark of Light within infinite fields of Light.
As we’ve launched into a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned, so have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the Divine transfigured ideal of a more just truth and future we concentrated into focused power in Scorpio, expanded into new truths and futures in Sagittarius, and crafted into forms of personal power in Capricorn. This month’s Capricorn transits renew the organizational structures we forged in 2020, and the Aquarian transits prime the pump for the new initiatives coming in March!
