An Astrological Overview of October 2022

An Astrological Overview of October 2022

As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.

The Overview for October

This year the month of October continues the intensity of Saturn square Uranus coupled with “tag team” aspects made first by the Sun, then by Venus, and finally by Mercury! The Sun opposes Chiron the first week of the month, followed by Venus opposing Chiron just a few days later. We find the Sun quincunx Uranus in the second week of October, followed quickly by Venus making the same aspect.

The Sun and Venus both quincunx Neptune, trine Mars, and square Pluto the third week of October, and then both square Pluto just as Mercury opposes Chiron and quincunxes Uranus. Then Venus conjuncts the Sun, and swaps positions so that it begins to make the aspects before the Sun instead of after it!

Venus conjunct the Sun during the second, third, and fourth weeks of October should bring beauty, balance, justice, and a sense of proportion to things this month, so enjoy the Libra elegance illuminated by the Sun, made pleasing and appreciated by Venus, and then seen in “a different Light” when Mercury follows the same aspect track during the last two weeks of the month.

The month begins under the influence of the late September New Moon at 3 Libra, promising us all “the dawning of a new day revealing a transformed world” wherever it falls in our chart. This was a powerful New Moon enabling us all “to cut to the chase,” as it featured Mercury retrograde conjunct Venus with both trine Pluto! This will prove very favorable for planets and points we have near 25-29 Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.

Speaking of Mercury retrograde, it turns stationary direct on October 2, and quickly enters Libra a few days later. So we have a heavy Libra presence this month, showing a lot of activity wherever we have that sign in our chart. Because Mercury will transit its shadow zone a third time, we should have a sense of being able to understand and master whatever we’re going through, with the added benefit of having experienced the Sun and Venus transiting Libra before the Mercury transit.

Jupiter continues to retrograde this month, returning to its home sign of Pisces at the end of the month. This affects any planets we have in Sagittarius and Pisces, as well as the houses where we have these signs on the cusp. This marks a “slight return” to the vast feelings related to Pisces, so be willing to follow the tides, whether going out or coming in, and bless the endings as a prelude to the new beginnings promised when Jupiter returns to Aries at the end of December.

This continues our review of events set into motion at the Mars/Jupiter conjunction at 4 Aries in late May. That set a new two year cycle into motion with the theme of how to enjoy life more naturally on our own terms. This continues to give us glimpses of the major growth to come early next year when Jupiter re-enters Aries and conjuncts Chiron.

October brings stability and understanding through the trines made from the inner planets in Libra to Mars and Saturn. However, we’ll also have to deal with the numerous “expansion through sacrifice” quincunxes of the Libra transits to Uranus and Neptune, followed by the intense squares to Pluto. The trines will help us prepare for the Mars retrograde period, while the quincunxes will act as an off-set “Yod,” or “Finger of God,” with the Libra planets the focus of the nozzle. Expect adjustments and sacrifices which will help stabilize the Air sign houses in our charts.

October begins with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto all retrograde, continuing our review of past transformational experiences in the life areas they’re transiting, but then things begin to change, since Pluto goes direct in early October and Saturn goes direct in late middle October. This represents a sea change in the collective spiritual field, and marks the resumption by these two spiritual powerhouses of their transit through the end of their signs en route to Saturn entering Pisces and Pluto entering Aquarius in 2023.

Saturn is still teaching us how to manage our feelings and our individual spirituality to play our part in the greater Aquarian 20 year era now developing. This month Saturn continues to crystallize what we need to learn about the second half of Aquarius, with the theme of “Management.” This month Saturn’s station encourages us to rise to some type of urgent need or “emergency” through “an exaggeration of life problems which shows our true stature and expands us.” Be joyous as you help put out a metaphoric “forest fire,” since this is the technique for achieving the skill we need to manage our responses to life’s challenges.

Planets Slowing Down, Speeding Up, or Shifting Signs

October is an extraordinary month for planets going retrograde and changing signs! This month Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto all go direct and Mars goes retrograde. So Mercury’s speeding up, Mars is slowing down, Saturn and Pluto will barely begin to pick up speed, with Uranus and Neptune still solidly retrograde.

In October we have four planets changing signs. This month Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, will give us three sign experiences (Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio), and the Sun, ruler of Leo and Cancer, will give us two (Libra and Scorpio). Venus, ruler of Taurus/Libra, will give us two (Libra and Scorpio), and Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces, will also give us two (Aries and Pisces). As you can see, there is a lot of sign shifting this month affecting quite a few signs!

Mars

The BIG NEWS this month is that Mars is slowing to go retrograde at the end of the month at 26 Gemini. It’ll be there another 6 months, so adapt! Mars in Gemini is versatile, but can get too spread out in “multi-tasking” mode. Because it is slowing to go retrograde in late October, please remember that much which is initiated at this time won’t move forward until January. Long term planning will sustain the faithful in the interim.

Mars is activating the house(s) where we have 21 through 26 Gemini. The good news is that the Sun and Venus both make trines to Saturn in the first half of October, and trines to Mars during the first three weeks of October, helping us stabilize things before the cross currents associated with Mars retrograde. The only hard aspect Mars makes in October is the square to Neptune, indicating the first major turning point of the Mars/Neptune cycle which began in mid-May at 25 Pisces. Because of the retrograde, this cycle has actually been “put on hold,” with a need to revisit and/or rework some things before it resumes in January and actually moves into the next phase in March.

For the entire month, Mars is in the Aquarius decan of Gemini, ruled by Saturn with an extra dose of the Moon. Because of all the favorable aspects in Air signs this month, there should be an ease of interaction for any planets we may have in Air and Fire signs. Again, the only major friction is Mars square Neptune, requiring us to demonstrate good Virgo and Sagittarius skills. This can help us remove blocks to our happiness along with getting rid of preconceptions which don’t help us emotionally or socially.

Between October 1-10, Mars will agitate those with planets between 21-24 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, and between October 10-20 it will agitate planets or points we have between 24-28 degrees of those signs. From October 20-30 it will agitate those same planets or points.

Because Mars is in Gemini for many months, the position of Mercury will be important in how Mars expresses its energies. Mercury in Virgo the first 10 days of the month brings more precision and attention to detail; Mercury in Libra through October 29 will bring more balance and moderation; Mercury in Scorpio at the end of October will intensify everything!

As I’ve offered before, when Mars is within a degree of forming or separating from a hard aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force. Hard aspects to/from Mars always require that we moderate or antidote impulsiveness and impatience.

Sign Focus

This month the sign focus is on signs opposing the outer planet occupied zone. As noted earlier, we have Mercury in Virgo just separating from the opposition to Neptune, and Libra planets opposing Jupiter the first half of the month. We’re done with the oppositions to Pluto and Saturn for the year except when the Moon is in late Cancer and late Leo. In fact, we won’t have any more non-Lunar oppositions to outer planets until November when the inner planets will all oppose Uranus.

As offered earlier, October is very active when it comes to sign changes. Virgo disappears when Mercury re-enters Libra in the second week of October, with a big change coming on the 23rd when both Sun and Venus enter Scorpio. That makes the last week of the month powerful, since Jupiter and Mercury also change signs at the very end of the month. So this month puts the focus on Libra and Scorpio, with the rest of the planets spread out in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini.

The Aquarius-Taurus Tension This Year

We are now navigating the heart of the Saturn square Uranus Storm Zone! Last year we were all put through a lot of pressure wherever we had 11-17 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. While we were granted some relief up to now, the pressure’s back wherever we have 16-21 degrees of those signs. Saturn and Uranus will remain in square through early December, again challenging us to see what matters so we can let go of nonessentials.

Last year we had three squares from Saturn to Uranus; one from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus, another with Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus at 14 Taurus, and a third with Saturn direct at 12 Aquarius and Uranus retrograde at 12 Taurus. These waning (upper) squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus mark the culmination of the cycle set into motion with Saturn conjunct Uranus in 1988. Interestingly, in 1999-2000 Saturn in Taurus made its waxing (lower) square to Uranus in Aquarius, so last year activated conflicts dating back 20 years.

We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set

The Grand Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius began a new 20 year Aquarian Era in December 2020, as well as a new 200 year Era, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. We’ve begun to grow beyond the materialism of the past 200 years and have entered two centuries of Air emphasis, with its qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.

The 2020 Solar eclipse on the Summer Solstice is still facilitating a grand reorientation in our lives, including an acceptance of new allegiances and life directions, and the December 2020 Solar eclipse at 24 Sagittarius is still helping us remove blocks to our happiness. The June 2021 Solar eclipse at 20 Gemini is already removing irrelevant and extraneous ideas and considerations from our decision making process, and the extremely beneficial Total Solar Eclipse at 13 Sagittarius in early December 2021 gave us a promise of major gifts and unique interactive opportunities which will be perfect for whatever we need. Rewards are coming these next 4 years!

We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 and 13 Sagittarius, 20 Gemini and 11 Taurus, since 1 Cancer aligns us with a larger reality, 24 Sagittarius helps us find happiness, 13 Sagittarius gives us a new identity and love, 20 Gemini removes what cannot be assimilated or communicated, and 11 Taurus will help us remove “weeds from our garden of Life and Mind.” All in all, these were some very favorable eclipses wherever they impact our lives.

The mid-June 2021 Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini continues to shut down parts of our lives in that sector for years to come. All the eclipses in Gemini and Sagittarius are removing old ideas, old perspectives, old truths, and old futures. May’s eclipses with Sun in Taurus has begun to shut down old value systems in that sector, as well as the Scorpio sector now that the May Full Moon Wesak Festival eclipse has begun to bring us a global wisdom mentioned earlier related to where late Scorpio and late Taurus fall in our charts.

As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.

The Grand Irrationality

In October, the 7-pointed “Star of Destiny" I’ve termed The Grand Irrationality is in play every time the inner planets transit 20-22 degrees of Libra, forming triseptiles to both Uranus and Neptune. This is a dynamic “Kite” pattern which will activate all 7 zones! So October will be very intense as we move through the interactive choices and changes indicated by these aspects.

All of the septile-series 7th harmonic aspects from the inner planets to the outer spiritual planets represent turning points at the hard edge of revolutionary change we’ve been going through for a while. Obviously, this is activated every time the Moon moves through one of the seven “hot zones” of this evolutionary configuration. All septile-series aspects are irrational points representing “forks in the road of destiny” in any larger cycle. If you have a planet or point near any of the seven zones, your life is sure to be affected. In October these zones are around 2-6 Aquarius, 24-28 Pisces, 16-20 Taurus, 7-11 Cancer, 28 Leo- 2 Virgo, 20-24 Libra, and 11-15 Sagittarius.

During the periods these 7th harmonic aspects are in play, if things get weird or crazy, be clear about the choices you’re making. While a lot won’t “make sense,” it doesn’t have to; just be clear about what you’re doing and why. Even though there may be interactions with unreasonable or irrational people, we still have the power to respond in productive ways.

As with “hard” aspects to and from Mars, if that planet (or really any planet) is involved in any non-rational aspect, whether one to our natal Mars or transiting Mars making a non-rational aspect to one of our natal, progressed, or solar return planets, it’s a time to be cautious during the period when the aspect is within a degree of forming or separating. Things have a way of getting strange during 7th harmonic aspects, so those are times to be especially deliberate and thoughtful in choosing our responses.

Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month

October begins under the influence of the late September New Moon at 3 Libra, putting the spotlight on that house in our charts. As that New Moon is on a degree of “a new day dawns revealing a transformed world,” coupled with Mercury and Venus trine Pluto, it’s a good month to get to the heart of any matter, clean out our ideas and relationships to make sure they reflect our values, and due to the opposition to Jupiter, show humor and vision when it’s time to play a new role or see how to focus a new momentum. Overall, the first half of the month features the Sun and Venus both trine Saturn, helping us stabilize our integrative potential in multiple forms, and very favorable for planets we have in the middle degrees of the Fire and Air signs.

The first week begins with Venus opposed Jupiter and Mercury going stationary direct at 25 Virgo, giving us a path forward to practical matters which will bring us honor and recognition over the long run, as that’s the theme of the direct station degree. Because the entire first week features Mercury trine Pluto, we can certainly see to the core of things, bust lies and misrepresentations, and see the seeds of things to come very clearly. The first week ends with the Sun opposed Chiron, giving us an illuminated look at how we can heal into our Higher Self through finding a different perspective or a new ideal worthy of our efforts.

The first week has the Moon in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, making conjunctions with Pluto, Saturn, and Neptune. In Sag, by its opposition to Mars and squares to Mercury and Neptune, it fills in the void of that off-set Mutable T-square and shows us both the problem and the solution to any conflicted situation which may arise. When it enters Capricorn on October 2, it immediately makes a T-square with the Sun and Venus opposed Jupiter, throwing the integrative void into early Cancer.

So we begin the month with a fragmenting energy immediately followed by an integrative energy. Obviously this will impact any planets we have in late Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, as well as early Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. The best thing about the first week is the plethora of great Lunar aspects on October 3, 4, and 5, with a Yod on the 7th focusing the double “expansion through sacrifice” through the Sun.

The second week of October brings Pluto going stationary direct, followed by the Full Moon and Venus opposed Chiron and Mercury’s entry into Libra. We also find the Sun and then Venus both quincunx Uranus, the Sun and Venus both trine Saturn, Mars square Neptune, and Mercury opposed Jupiter. The Full Moon at 17 Aries/Libra will influence the second half of October, and the very favorable sextile and trine to Saturn shows productive heart energy is available to all!

All quincunxes bring “forced adjustments” requiring some sort of sacrifice, so consider the second week a time to focus on “taking a walk with our wisdom” as we reorient to move away from mental or emotional pollution. That week the Moon transits Pisces, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini, again putting the focus on Neptune, Jupiter, Chiron, Uranus and Mars. Overall, the second week is a good time to take a new look at our relationship to the collective, and find a broader view as well as a better way to do things. Adjust on the 10th and 11th, and set things into motion on the 12th, 13th, and 14th.

Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month

The last half of the month is under the influence of the Full Moon at 16 Aries/Libra, indicating a favorable time due to the Lunation sextile and trine Saturn, opening a very productive and harmonizing void around 17-21 Leo. Allow your heart to express itself, let go of old social or emotional inhibitions, reconnect with Source, and be as creative as you can be.

The second half of the month has Sun and Venus quincunx Neptune, trine Mars, and square Pluto. At this time, Mercury begins to echo the Sun and Venus aspects in the first half of October with the opposition to Chiron, quincunx to Uranus, trine to Saturn, quincunx to Neptune, trine Mars, square Pluto, and finally, quincunx Jupiter just before it enters Scorpio.

The third week of the month shows the Moon entering Cancer and transiting Leo and Virgo, making T-squares with Mercury and Jupiter on the 15th and 16th coupled with Sun quincunx Neptune. We get another T-square on October 17 with Moon in Cancer opposed Pluto and square Sun and Venus, throwing the void into late Aries. As the Sun and Venus both trine Mars that week, it should be good for getting things done as Mars begins to slow toward its retrograde station.

Wednesday October 19 is extremely volatile, with Sun and Venus both square Pluto and the Moon in Leo forming a T-square with Saturn and Uranus, throwing the void into mid-Scorpio. We then close out the third week of October with a Lunar quincunx to Jupiter and then to Saturn, again requiring some adjustments and sacrifices for purely practical purposes.

The fourth week of October brings Mercury quincunx Uranus and trine Saturn, with Venus finally catching up to its conjunction with the Sun, setting a new Venus cycle into motion lasting through their next conjunction at 15 Gemini in June 2024. As Mercury is mirroring the same aspects made by the Sun and Venus during the first half of the month, regard this period as one where we get the perspective or understanding we need “after the fact.” (Bill pointed out that this is when we acquire wisdom by reflecting on our emotional, self-involved experience.)

The fourth week also brings us Saturn going stationary direct on October 22/23, followed by the Sun and Venus entering Scorpio and immediately making quincunxes to Jupiter! Usually when the outer planets go stationary retrograde or direct it’s a major “sea change” in areas ruled by those planets, so if called to rise to some occasion, take it on gladly, as it is a time of “exaggeration of life problems, which expands us.”

The fourth week of October brings the Solar Eclipse at 2 Scorpio, ushering in a long wave period of saying goodbye to the past, giving up some old ideals, and finding a new perspective on how and when to do things. Mars is slowing down, so remember that many things began in September and October will slow down or even go into reverse when Mars goes retrograde at the end of the month. During the fourth week of October the Moon transits Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius, with some quickly unfolding productive times on October 26 and mixed signals on the 28th due to the Moon in an opposition-sextile-trine with Saturn and Mars again throwing a favorable void into Leo.

The end of October brings the swirl of Mars going retrograde at 26 Gemini, a degree of “seeing the bare trees” after all the leaves have fallen. This promises somewhat of a stark Autumn, with many things bogging down amidst cross currents and the intractable conflicts indicated in November when the Scorpio transits oppose Uranus and square Saturn, again testing our hearts. See clearly and act quickly on October 26-27, and allow yourself to glimpse a more ideal future as Jupiter slips back into Pisces on October 27 for its last few weeks in that sign. October 28 brings another Mutable T-square, the 29th brings Mercury quincunx Neptune with favorable sextiles from the Moon to the Sun and Venus, and the month ends with the finality of the Moon’s conjunctions with Pluto and Saturn while square the Sun and Venus.

Evolutionary Development

This is the ninth month of the North Node in Taurus era! We’re now in a time of our greatest development coming through the sign of appreciation, value, and enjoying the best life has to offer.

Mars conjunct Jupiter in Aries in late May set the pace for new openings these next 2 years, so embrace the adventure in new actions and new freedom to be as authentic as you need to be. This month our wise friend Saturn continues to help us manage Aquarius energies in our lives, with the entire month showing our need to rise to some emergency which will give us a sense of our strength and resilience. These will be most evident during the times Saturn is trined, whether from Gemini or Libra, and continues our training in utilizing spiritual power effectively.

We’re now finishing up two years of non-stop friction between Saturn in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus. The square is active for many weeks to come, so keep eliminating all which is of no use in the future, keep building heart and focused spiritual expression, and remember your inner Spiritual Warrior can never be overcome. This will help us understand what matters and what doesn’t, so don’t worry if you have to say no to something or someone.

The tension from the square will be greatly relieved by January 2023. Given the friction between Aquarius and Taurus triggered these next 4 weeks each time the Moon transits the Fixed signs, stay focused on your larger ideals, and keep showing heart, taking heart, trusting the heart, strengthening the heart, and radiating the Love you ARE to your world, expressed through a conscious focus, concentration, and intention.

Our recent Aries initiatives will expand quickly in early 2023, with past and current Taurus experiences showing us how to keep it simple, pleasant, and steady. The current Virgo and Libra transits are helping us find power and awareness through Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, with past, present, and future “Tensions of Opposites” leading us to a higher integrated view as we resolve the opposition energies into understanding and productivity. Just remember that the Gemini transits in May, June, and July gave us a “first look” at what we’ll be dealing with for many months to come during the Mars transit of Gemini. We began the first tests in late August. These will last through mid-October, with things slowing down or even going into reverse after that thanks to Mars retrograde.

The Sun in Libra is a time to see the Light of “right relationships” which will lead us to new focus and magnetism in Scorpio. Libra is where we learn to embrace a more elegant, beautiful, fair or just archetype or idea so we can see the truth and future of the unfolding Aquarius ideal which came to surface during the Leo transits. Virgo helped us shape that energy into significant forms by knowing what to eliminate for practical purposes, while Libra will help us bring beauty and balance to those forms.

This year’s Aquarian energies are now stabilizing their climb to fulfillment as prelude to the rapid developments to come in 2023. Because Jupiter is still in Aries, try to experience yourself as an individual unique spark of Light which is part of the greater infinite Light field.

As we’re now in the middle of the second year of a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned. Have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the Divine transfigured ideal of a more just truth and future. This month brings understanding and cohesion to all that has surfaced these past weeks, as well as sacrifices and openings as we begin our trek toward the coming Pluto in Aquarius era.

The 2022 Capricorn and Aquarius transits began a new chapter of utilizing forms of personal power in Capricorn to serve the emerging Aquarian ideal. A huge part of the past died earlier this year and a new expansive inspired energy came in via the Mars conjunction with Jupiter in Aries. This is the time to keep steady on our course, unimpeded by old mindsets and considerations.

Open to new ways of seeing and honoring beauty, and make adjustments in your trajectory at this time of quincunxes and trines. We have overcome old inertias, discovered ways to move events in various directions according to our understanding, and gotten a new dose of Wisdom involving the vision of our heart’s desire expressed in our efficient adaptation to events.

Our wisdom is taking shape through our power to attain freedom of movement despite limiting conditions. We are finding “spiritual linkage through emotional stress” and “the blessings which come after the end of old ways.” And because an eclipse has been removing all which would obstruct our happiness for the past 21 months, and the new global wisdom now spreading across our planet is filling that void, this is a time when we can find new forms of genuine happiness appropriate for who we are now.

We’ve ended many things and begun a new expression these past four months; the past is over and we all have begun our trek into a new world of new potential, new adventures, and new ways to enjoy being ourselves, doing our work of Destiny. Open to the abundance of the process of growth, since we are all on a rocket ship to the stars!
