On Thursday, July 15th, the centaur, Chiron, joined the majority of the outer planets in their retrograde dance. What these annual retrograde phases of these planets (and centaur) afford us is the opportunity to direct the qualities of each of these planets within. This also helps us to better process, assimilate and make sense of the outer world and our role in it.

These annual retrograde phases are essential for our own internal growth. They also allow us to prepare the field for when the planets will be direct again. So this isn’t a time to do nothing. In fact we can be incredibly busy creating and perfecting the preconditions that are necessary in order to achieve our goals in the future. And this is no less true for Chiron. 

During the weeks leading up to the station of Chiron on Thursday, ask yourself if something critical was being revealed to you. This could have been about a health problem that you were not fully aware of, or the health of someone close to you. This could also have been a deeper awareness of an older wound that you had forgotten about, whether that be physical or emotional. Chiron aims to bring not only awareness, but understanding to the problem. The inner journey with Chiron during its retrograde phase can also be an incredibly insightful time when wisdom and understanding also allows us to see that there is a greater purpose and meaning to our lives. 

Admitting that we even have any wounds or things that make us stand out requires a certain amount of courage and humility. Out of shame and fear of being ostracized, or being seen as weak, we will hide our wounds away in some dark and forbidden place of shame. But by doing so we don’t serve anyone. Embracing our wounds and our weaknesses is not only admitting that we are part of this vast human condition we call life, it also allows us to relate to, and understand others. This is what makes us better, more accessible, more compassionate human beings.

The Chiron 5-month retrograde phase is a critical time of year in which we are being asked to pay attention to our own healing journey. We can no longer ignore problems that we’ve been merely tolerating. It is time to pay attention to what caused them, and then fix them once and for all. Chiron not only shows us our wounds, Chiron also brings us the tools and methods to either heal and/or accept them for what they are. And that will be our job for the next 5 months of this Chironic journey: to go within, discover the wounds that are undermining our well-being, seek out the remedy, and apply it. It’s a journey about self-healing. 

Therefore, may we allow Chiron to lead us towards our own healing journey, that we may be a light for others to follow.
