Venus leaves its stay in adventurous, expansive Sagittarius 7:54 pm PST on December 9 and enters pragmatic and studied Capricorn, where it stays until it enters idealistic and detached Aquarius on January 2. What does Venus’ passage through Capricorn hold for all of us?

This brings the next shift in the energy of planets and houses we have in Taurus and Libra. Venus will occupy Capricorn from now through January 2, bringing the love of propriety, refined ways of relating to others, and a value for formality and established protocols. Venus in this sign is a worker, mainly to rid ourselves of that which is unpleasant.

Venus in Capricorn is in Earth, a very favorable element for Venus because of its rulership of Taurus. While Capricorn is frictional to its Libra nature, it is also agreeable with its Cardinality. In Capricorn, it harmonizes with planets in the Earth and Water signs, and brings those with Venus in Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn to a turning point in their relationships.

Venus in Capricorn is in its own 4th sign, as per its rulership of Libra, and in its own 9th sign, as per its rulership of Taurus. In its own 4th it anchors its sense of fairness, justice, and balance, and in its own 9th, it opens a higher view of values and how to use what we have to feed our future.

It should be good for people with Sun or Moon in Capricorn, because when Venus comes to visit your Lights, you could find yourself beholding something or someone of great beauty or value who can illuminate you or care for you in Venusian ways. Because it is the backdrop to how planets in Taurus and Libra express themselves, if things move away from the inspired scattered energies of Sagittarius into a more careful and pragmatic way of being with others, take the cue and re-shape your likes and expression accordingly.

Venus in Capricorn values the ability to relate to others at a higher, or perhaps more formal or refined way of interacting. Value maturity, value restraint, value boundaries, value taking responsibility, and value your ability to relate to others at the peak of your integrity.

Mercury and Venus In An Earth Dance With Each Other

At this point, Venus is in front of the Sun for many months to come until Venus’ Inferior conjunction with the Sun at 21 Leo in August 2023. While it is currently just behind Mercury by 4 degrees, by late December Mercury is slowing down, preparing to go retrograde on December 29 at 25 Capricorn. So for now, both Mercury and Venus are in Capricorn and acting as “heralds” for our Solar Capricorn experience which begins at the Solstice on December 21.

Now that Mercury and Venus are both in Capricorn, they again are in very close conjunction, blending the rulership energy of our Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, and Libra sectors. This also brings the energy of Capricorn to those sectors, where we will launch phase two of the Mercury/Venus cycle when they conjunct at Mercury’s station in late December.

We had the first of three Mercury conjunctions with Venus in an 8 month period on November 21 at 8 Sagittarius. This is the second, culminating on December 29 when they conjunct at 25 Capricorn. This will activate the Jupiter/Pluto conjunctions of 2020, giving new understanding via a look back at all which has died or sprouted since then. As Venus is involved, we should be able to get a new appreciation of what has opened and/or closed since then.

The third conjunction, in a strange twist, happens at 29 Leo in late July just after Venus goes stationary retrograde on that degree. So the Capricorn conjunction takes place as Mercury is SRX and Venus is direct, whereas the Leo conjunction takes place as Venus is SRX and Mercury is direct.

A Brief Look at How We Got Here

To give a brief recap of what we’ve been through since April, while Venus in Pisces feels everything there is to feel, and Venus in Aries feels only what is immediate and passing, leaping forward into relationships and quick to like and “unlike” things, Venus in Taurus savors each moment. Venus in Taurus likes what it likes and is not inclined to try new things unless they’re easy and pleasant. While Venus in Aries is highly agitated, Venus in Taurus likes comfort and ease. We experienced Venus in Aries and Taurus in May and June.

When Venus was in Gemini late June through late July it began a new “pulse,” and we experienced a more curious, open, and adaptable approach to our likes, loves, and fancies. Venus in Gemini gives a “love of learning,” a love of exploring all the ideas there are to explore which capture the imagination. It is good with words and ideas, and solves information puzzles by seeing ways to put them together. We learned new Venusian likes, values, and the social promise in Gemini.

Venus then moved through Cancer between late July through mid-August, giving opportunities to secure what nurtured us and allowed us to have deeper relationships. Venus in Cancer loves deep, tender connections with people and experience. While it is VERY sensitive, it is also the most caring placement for Venus, because it rules Taurus, the exaltation of the Moon. The Moon does well in Venus signs, and Venus does well in Lunar signs (I include Leo, as the Moon is the spiritual ruler of Leo, as I explain in Saturn, Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend.

Venus in Leo began a new pulse mid-August through early September, and took the introversion and sensitivity of Cancer and turned it outward in creative and dramatic forms of expression. Venus in Virgo for almost all of September completed this dual pulse by learning to value expressing “significant form” and “divine Discernment.” Leo gave us a new enthusiasm and sense of heartfelt liking and loving of things and people, and Virgo helped us find the place and function of each detail in our lives.

This next dual pulse began when Venus entered its home sign of Libra at the end of September. Venus in Libra is said to value and express more balanced, reasoned, beautiful and “symmetric” interactions and experiences. It is interactive, gracious, and wants to make forms more pleasing. It’s just finished its time in Scorpio, where our social instincts were reoriented toward a greater connection with self and others, and a greater intensity and scrutiny of all our interactions with the world.

We began a new pulse with Venus in Sagittarius from mid-November to now. That position brings openness and a willingness to dance with possibilities, appreciating the spaces which allow us the freedom to explore each other, and seeing how what we value feeds our future or not. Whereas Venus in Scorpio can be tough because of its relentless scrutiny of others, Sagittarius values freedom and seeking higher, broader truths, whether others agree with them or not. Venus in Sagittarius takes all which was “cocooned” in Scorpio and allows it to fly free.

From Here We Dance On

Venus’ entry into Capricorn is the gateway to a new Venusian experience which will lead us to a greater appreciation and value for our ability to be mature adults with mature values and mature relationships. Evaluate what social protocols you’re good with, and which need to be dropped in the face of “hard realities and responsibilities” which will come into focus with Venus in Capricorn. Still, enjoy the control over life which comes with Venus in this practical Earth sign, let go of getting entangled with lesser things, or those things and people who would unnecessarily restrict you by their rules. With Venus in Capricorn, we learn to enjoy being our own boss!

Venus in Scorpio taught us about what we can attract and how to do it, as well as what we cannot hold on to because the magnetism is no longer there. Venus in Sagittarius taught us about how much we value freedom and the ability to like a wider scope of possibilities. We now get to craft our Venusian responses to enjoy personal power and more adult interactions. As our Venus response evolves, we have the capability to enjoy the subtle pleasures in life to the fullest. No longer over-indulgent or self-denying, we can choose what to like and find a rich appreciation for the banquet of life experiences which are ours for the enjoying!

Venus’ duality is Wisdom/Folly. By our Venus responses, we are led out of erroneous values, vanities, and ways of interacting into the wisdom of “Right Relationship.” In esoteric philosophy, Venus is said to be the elder sister of the Earth, so perhaps our Venus shows us how to refine what is of value and leave the superficial and vain imaginings of the ego behind, just as humanity is learning globally at this time in history. Venus is definitely part of the equation in our personal and interpersonal happiness.
