Spiritual Astrology in the Autumn of 2019 pt. 3

The Dance of Saturn Direct and Uranus Retrograde Stations Across the Years

Saturn and Uranus hold the key to our highest spiritual realizations about who we are as “merest specks in the Ocean of Light/Life.” By knowing how to work and play with these energies in the world of inner Being and outer doing, we become the unique expression of Loving Wise Intelligence.

That’s one of the primary reasons I wrote Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend. While the inner planets are associated with personality, and Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are associated with all things in the social and cultural world, Saturn is where the visible world with its boundaries and limits meets the invisible transpersonal spiritual realm of Uranus. While we have to learn how to master each of our planetary energies, mastering our inner Saturn function allows us at crucial moments to “break on through to the other side” when we have trained to know how to respond when Uranus awakens us to a greater spiritual connection.

In the book, I explain how Uranus knows no restriction in its infinite possibilities of awakening at any moment to any thing. It is why the highest realizations arise in a flash and not after some lengthy contemplation of orderly thoughts and conclusions. Still, this divine spark of awakening must acquire a form or it is not grounded in our lives. When we have a genuine realization, we must attempt to see how it works out in practice so we can become well-rounded in that realization.

We become well-rounded as a function of practice over time, understanding the nuances and variables in applying any realization. Time and understanding are in the realm of Saturn. Saturn is our Master, Friend, and constant companion as we move from the unreal to the real, from darkness to Light, from ignorance to wisdom, and from fear to Love.

Saturn symbolizes the universal binding force in Nature, the “Ring Pass Not” of Dharma that permits all things if they serve Dharma and no thing if it does not serve Dharma. Saturn is our “skin of personality,” the boundaries of what we are able to master, found through the ten thousand things which temporarily enslave us through various types of mental, emotional, or material inertia.

It could be stated that Uranus is the Higher Law, while Saturn is the worldly law. Uranus helps us break free, break out, and break through the binding force Saturn represents. Saturn helps us give structure through discipline to our eternal discoveries along our Path to Truth. In one esoteric system, Saturn is Divine Understanding, whereas Uranus is Divine Wisdom. Both serve each other in the Great Work each of us is here to do. If you’re interesting in diving deeper into the dance Saturn and Uranus do in our lives to bring us to spiritual adulthood fully living our individuality and higher purpose, please consult Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend where you can find more about this process.

The Dance of Saturn and Uranus Stations

This year, Uranus went stationary retrograde at 7 Taurus August 11-12, and Saturn went stationary direct at 14 Capricorn September 18. Each of these stationary points indicate major sea changes in their respective areas of influence. Though separating, the trine influences was generated by the multiple conjunctions in early Virgo, and the Moon continues to make the Grand Earth trine with each transit through Virgo.

In 2018, Uranus went stationary retrograde at 3 Taurus on August 7, and Saturn went stationary direct at 3 Capricorn on September 6. The 2018 earth trine was dominant most of the year, and extended and grounded the original trine in fire initiated in November 2016. The trine from Saturn in Sag to Uranus in Aries lasted all of 2017, followed by a brief tredecile in early 2018, moving back into an Earth trine beginning May 2018.

This means our Spirits were strengthened and our understanding stabilized in 2017, with inspiration in the air which was very favorable wherever we have the last decan of Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius in our charts. That inspiration was grounded in an initial form in 2018, and was equally favorable wherever we have the first decan of Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. Any trine between Saturn and Uranus favors blending the old with the new, the established with the innovative, uniqueness with structure, and potential with a plan.

For quite a few years, these spiritual heavyweights have been hitting their contrasting stations within a few weeks of each other. That in itself is highly significant, since either of these events has it own powerful importance in how the world advances and the lessons being learned at any given point in history. Interestingly, with a few relatively rare exceptions, Saturn also goes retrograde within a few weeks of Uranus going direct, along with Saturn going direct within a few weeks of Uranus going retrograde.

The fact that these planets are hitting their stations within a few weeks of each other signifies we’re going through a period when we hit dual “threshold states,” each one beginning a review of innovations and revolutions just past, and structures and duties already realized, reviewed, and ready to be fulfilled. This has been going on for quite a few years, and I believe the aspects they make during these stationary events are indicative of how easy or difficult these sea changes are. Today we’ll examine the aspects made when Saturn goes direct near Uranus going retrograde.

The Past 8 Years

In 2011, Saturn went direct at 11 Libra in mid-June while Uranus went RX at 5 Aries in early July, an opposition that separated over the following months. This indicated the polarity of oppositional energy passed into tensional awareness the second half of 2011, eventually becoming a waning triseptile in late 2011 and early 2012.

In 2012, Saturn went direct at 23 Libra in late June while Uranus went RX 9 Aries in early July, an “undecaquartisextile” or 165 degree aspect. It is said this combines both harmonious and disruptive influences. The second half of 2012 they moved into another waning triseptile and then quincunx, settling into a biquintile in early 2013.

In 2013, Saturn went direct at 5 Scorpio in early July, while Uranus went RX at 13 Aries about a week later. While this is not an aspect, from there they went on to make another triseptile, then quincunx, and biquintile through the end of the year.

In 2014, Saturn went direct at 17 Scorpio within a few hours of Uranus going SRX at 17 Aries. That was a very powerful quincunx that dominated that period, and forced a lot of practical adjustment, attention to health, and adaptability in understanding things from multiple angles of approach. The second half of 2014 they made a biquintile, settling into the first of several sesquisquares in late 2014.

In 2015, Uranus went stationary retrograde at 21 Aries in late July just a few days before Saturn went direct at 29 Scorpio in early August. This isn’t an aspect, and from there they began to make a series of sesquisquares to each other. By the end of 2015 they began to be within orb of a trine, but receded from their paths before making it.

In 2016, Uranus went stationary retrograde at 25 Aries in late July about 2 weeks before Saturn went direct at 9 Sagittarius in mid-August. This was an almost exact sesquisquare, which are 8th harmonic aspects, along with semisquares, squares, and oppositions. Sesquisquares can happen from planets in signs that are harmonious, or disharmonious.

All sesquisquares are frictional and interactive. That began a period of agitation and disharmony, even though both planets were in signs that ordinarily are harmonious with each other. That marked a period of agitation in our charts wherever we had Sagittarius and Aries in our charts. It was friction without crisis, spurring us to act in a deliberate way to understand and act on something in the houses involved in our charts.

Two years ago I gave you an example of how this worked out in my own life. At that time, Saturn was on the border of my 4th and 5th houses, and Uranus was in my 9th approaching my MC. At that time I realized through frictional (sesquisquare) events that I would be moving at some point in the not-distant future (4th house), and also realized I wanted to write a children’s book (5th house is children) AND play more. Juggling those 3 things was frictional at best!

By the time Saturn went retrograde in early 2017, I had in fact made a substantial life move. When Uranus went stationary retrograde at 29 Aries in early August about 3 weeks before Saturn went direct at 22 Sagittarius in late August it was the heart of the Grand Fire Trines, and stabilized and harmonized the areas of our lives where we have the last part of the Fire and Air signs.

In 2018, Uranus went retrograde in early August at 3 Taurus, and Saturn went direct in early September at 3 Capricorn, opening 3 Virgo as a Grand Earth Trine point. That pair of combined stations indicated that by blending the established and innovative we can understand inner powers as well as outer “guardian angels” who gave (and continue to give) us “Divine help when human efforts seem to fail.” As this is one of the ongoing themes of TransPluto, the planet symbolizing Divine Mother, it seems that set a threshold for Divine Mother energy stabilizing with the Divine Awakener to focus a harmony of understanding and stable function expressed through Saturn, stabilizing our practical spirituality this past year.

This year, Uranus went RX at 7 Taurus in mid-August, and Saturn is now stationary direct at 14 Capricorn. The waning trine relationship continues via the Earth element, but as I noted in previous parts of this series, they will soon be back in a serendipitous tredecile and then a fateful biseptile for most of next year, marking a major “fork in the road of destiny” as we move toward the Grand Mutation of 2020 launching a new 200 year era to come!

The Big Picture

So take a look at where Saturn is in your chart, since it’s the timekeeper helping you restructure that part of your life. Look to where Uranus is, since it’s helping you see ways to break free of binding conditions and claim your spiritual individuality. See how they moved through your houses over the past 8 years, showing you the binding lessons you had to learn, but in absolute freedom to learn in your own unique way.

Summing up the past three years, wherever Saturn and Uranus have been dancing in your chart, a) in 2017 you experienced a harmonizing of Solar Fire with Fire by friction to become inspired in your understanding of how to blend your Destiny with your need to be free to BE your individuality, b) in 2018 you experienced grounding your innovative freedom to take responsibility for your Destiny, and c) in 2019 you’ve practiced skills you’ll use in the future as you’ve awakened to “a new quality of being rendering the old patterns obsolete.”

Just as Saturn has shown us the possibilities of a greater future and a more effective role to play in our world, Uranus has been teaching us which parts we’re singing in the Cosmic Choir and the most natural unique self-expression available to us. We now know what song(s) we are to sing on the stage of Life, and awakened to a greater, more effective individuality, and can move forward with confidence in the understanding we’ve attained and the structures we’ve built in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Given the radical shifts and pervasive irrationality in the global atmosphere, if you want to learn more about the power of Saturn and Uranus to shape your Spiritual and worldly existence, please consider re-visiting Uranus and Saturn – Inspiration and Reality, Freedom and Dharma, Individuality and Destiny. Many themes from that article are explored in greater breadth and depth in my book, Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend, so enjoy the intro and if you don't already have your copy, you can order via the link earlier in this post.
