The cosmic alarm clock is ringing, but loud. Rise and shine! Time to organize! Time to set up new habits, new systems, new methods, new … pretty much everything.

No broad, sweeping intentions for this New Moon. It calls for lists and details, the more granular, the better. No repeating your usual litany of goals, either. This one requires thinking outside the box – and, actually, blowing the box up altogether and building a wild new structure. Or making up a new way of living that doesn’t require anything that resembles a structure.

This New Moon’s beginnings, fresh starts and next phases are in the fix-it, clean-it, make-it-better sign of Virgo. Ruled by Mercury, it’s got a decidedly intellectual streak, assessing conditions in the here and now and analyzing them for improvement.

Mercury, by the way, is chugging along just fine, direct for almost two weeks and nearing the end of its retrograde shadow.

The Moon he’s overseeing is a cosmically fitting event, given how much the here and now has deviated from norms. What point is there in setting goals for a landscape that no longer exists? The world isn’t working as it has, so the practical response is to drop the tried and true and go for the new.

The motivation – and the demand – come from the Moon’s direct link with the influences that are reshaping reality. It’s in a tight square to Uranus, ruler of the higher mind, quick-change artist, awakener, liberator, lightning rod and cattle prod.

Uranus operates as a crazy, genius uncle to Mercury, ruler of the sign of Virgo. He’s an unpredictable, unstable, destabilizing and electrifying character, unleashing developments that upend perspectives, open minds and break mental and situational chains.

His relationship to the Moon is challenging, demanding attention and action. This is actually helpful. The aspect is great for brainstorming. What could you do differently? How could you run your life more effectively, efficiently or healthily? What if you threw out all the rules and then consider the question?

Stumped? A homing thought that captures this aspect (which is a square) is: Show me another way to look at this.

Odds are, though, ideas have been taking shape in your mind. Odds are you’ve been entertaining notions of how life could be and mulling over how to make that happen. Odds are you’re going into this New Moon with a to-do list that veers wildly from what you’ve done before.

And odds are also that you feel a nonrational but unshakable sense of mission. Or the touch of unseen hands persistently pushing you in a definite direction. Or the sound of the ticking of that cosmic alarm clock, erupting into an alarm with no snooze button.

Those sensations come from the Moon’s interaction with the other outer planet influences at work right now. The Moon is in the adjustment aspect of an inconjunct to Saturn and Neptune in Aries, igniting creative, spiritual control and leadership. The Moon is in the same aspect to Pluto in Aquarius, dredging up secrets and hidden impulses and transforming our relationship to friends, community, technology and our personal dreams. The two ends of these inconjuncts are opening windows of opportunity to each other. And the entire configuration is forming a yod, or finger of God, pointing right at the Moon.

This gives a sense of fatedness and inevitabiity to whatever you set in play – as well as to collective shifts birthed under this Moon.

So go for it, whatever that may be for you. Adapt your thinking and habits and boundaries to maneuver through the quickly changing landscape. Look at the outer volatility as inviting you to do what you haven’t before. If the rules no longer apply, why not make up your own?
