Brown Bear – Amethyst – Violet – Purple
August 23 to September 22
The Harvest Moon is the last moon of Shawnodese, Spirit Keeper of the South.
The animal totem for this position is the brown bear, the mineral totem is the amethyst, the plant totem is the violet, and the color associated with this place is purple. Its elemental influence comes from the Turtle clan.
The Harvest Moon brings lessons in discrimination and fair decision-making, encouraging good sense, perseverance, confidence, and analytical thinking. This energy fosters balance, rationality, and practicality, helping you gain a deeper understanding of work, duty, and responsibility.
In the brown bear position on the Medicine Wheel, it is important to guard against becoming overly critical of others or developing cynicism toward life’s challenges.
The brown bear teaches those in this position about their capacity for creative curiosity and personal exploration. The amethyst strengthens judgement and fairness, guiding you toward justice in thought and action.
The violet is a versatile and powerful medicinal plant, cherished for both its healing properties and beauty. Its leaves and flowers have traditionally been used as gentle soothing agents, particularly for irritated mucous membranes, and the plant is naturally rich in vitamin C. Historically, violet has been valued to support healthy blood and lymphatic circulation and to assist the body in clearing toxins from these systems. It has been used to ease sore throats, support respiratory function, and alleviate digestive discomfort, including issues affecting the stomach and bowels. Additional traditional uses include relief for headaches, ear problems, toothaches, skin conditions, and high fevers.
In the kitchen, violet offers both flavor and utility. Its leaves and flowers can be used as a natural thickener in stews, or to enhance the taste of salads, hot dishes, jams, and syrups. The mild, pleasant flavor makes it a delightful addition to many recipes, while still preserving its gentle nutritional benefits.
Beyond the physical, violet has long been associated with the heart and emotional well-being. Being around violet is said to awaken the heart to the fullness of its feelings, fostering greater understanding, compassion, and the ability to express love deeply. This combination of medicinal, culinary, and spiritual qualities makes violet a truly remarkable plant for body, mind, and soul.
Animal : Brown Bear

The brown bear is the animal totem associated with the Harvest Moon. Though it belongs to the same species as the black bear, a single litter can sometimes include both brown and black cubs. Brown bears create their dens in a variety of places: in holes, caves, beneath fallen trees, under waterfalls, or even in abandoned structures. Generally careful and quiet, these bears move deliberately and observe their surroundings attentively. They are omnivores, eating a wide range of foods, with honey and berries among their favorites. Their main threats come from humans and forest fires.
Much like their cousin, the raccoon, bears are naturally curious. They move slowly and deliberately, taking time to watch and learn from their environment. In the fall, however, they hurry to consume enough food to sustain themselves through winter. Bear hibernation is not complete; toward the end, females give birth to cubs and must remain partially awake to nurse and care for them.
Bears are cheerful and good-natured creatures, sharing several abilities with humans. They can stand and walk on two legs for short distances, climb trees, extract honey from bee hives, and even spear fish using their claws. Their intelligence, curiosity, and adaptability make the brown bear a fitting and powerful symbol for the Harvest Moon.

To Native peoples, the bear is a profoundly special animal. In many animal world legends—such as the story of how the Spirit Keeper animals were designated—the bear is recognized as the head of the council of animals. In this legend, the bear had long served as chief of the animal council, but his leadership was being challenged by the buffalo, eagle, and coyote, each believing their own qualities made them worthy leaders.
As the debate among these animals threatened the unity of the council, Mudjekeewis, Spirit Keeper of the West, entered and told the four contenders that, because of the unique gifts each possessed, each would serve alongside one of the Spirit Keepers. In this way, all their talents could be used, the council would remain united, and the bear would continue as chief alongside Mudjekeewis. The bear is honored as council chief for his fairness, strength, and courage. In most tribes, the Bear clan represents medicine, leadership, or defense.
By working with the bear, you can learn lessons in deliberation, patience, observation, slow and steady progress, fairness, courage, strength, healing, and teaching.
Mineral : Amethyst

Amethyst is the mineral associated with the Harvest Moon.
The amethyst symbolizes good judgment, justice, and courage. It is a calming stone that soothes, pacifies, and encourages discernment.
Traditionally, amethyst has been believed to protect against black witchcraft, lightning, hailstorms, and intoxication, making it a powerful ally for spiritual and physical well-being.
This stone can support spiritual attunement while helping to maintain balance between the energies of the physical and spiritual realms.
Amethyst also aids in recognizing the sources of anger, allowing you to release negative emotions and find inner clarity. It has a gentle effect on the Dream State, helping to promote understanding and insight.
Those who carry or wear amethyst often find that it stimulates nobility and purity, enhancing personal integrity and inspiring a higher sense of purpose.
Plant : Violet

Violet is the plant associated with the Harvest Moon. Violet symbolizes quiet, warmth, and reserved sentimentality. The violet is also a powerful medicinal plant; both the leaves and the flowers are good as soothing agents, particularly for irritated mucous membranes. It is also high in vitamin C. Medicinally, violet is good for penetrating the blood and lymphatic fluids, dissolving toxins in those areas. Violet can assist in healing cancer, and toxicity in the stomach or bowels. It relieves sore throats, difficulty in breathing, and helps cure tumours of the throat, ear problems, and headaches. Violet is good for relieving toothaches and skin problems. It cools high temperatures. Violet can be used as a thickener in stews and for flavouring in hot dishes, salads, jams and syrups. Being around violet awakens the heart to the fullness of its feelings and helps you understand the depths of your love.
Colour : Purple
Purple is the colour of the Harvest Moon. It mirrors the delicate violet, whose flowers often go unnoticed on the forest floor, and the deep, radiant hue of amethyst crystals. This shade of purple symbolizes ceremony, ritual, spiritual insight, idealism, and a deep love for humanity. Some variations of purple may indicate the use of spiritual power for personal gain. Purple represents wisdom, yet it can manifest in both positive and negative ways. Surrounding yourself with purple can inspire you, deepen your spiritual insights, enhance your connection to ritual and ceremony, and encourage you to reflect on how you are using your personal power.
The Energy of the Harvest Moon

Keywords: turning point, preparation, gathering
The Harvest Moon teaches us the art of preparation through the act of gathering. This moon signals a time of abundance—your efforts have borne fruit, and the harvest is full, ready to be collected. Reflect on how much to enjoy, share, and set aside for the future.
This is also a time to gather knowledge, courage, or even rest for the journey ahead. Begin preparations now so that you are ready for the changes that lie ahead. This process is a vital part of your personal evolution.
Those born under the Harvest Moon are often gifted at caring for others, yet they can neglect their own needs. Take care of yourself first, for if all your energy is spent helping others, your own well will run dry. Embrace the bounty of this season and gather what you will need to nourish your soul and sustain your journey forward.
Prayer:
Great Spirit, thank you for the gifts I receive in my life. I take this time to gather up what I need to prepare for the changes to come.
