There's nothing subtle about April's Aries New Moon. It's not planting and nourishing seeds; it's unleashing fireballs.

That fiery, self-starting, risk-taking drive that has been ramping up for the past month? It's about to blaze with the warmth of 1,000 suns. The anger and motivation and irritation and inspiration that've been rising within you? (And, fair warning, in the world around you?) All those sparks and brush fires are about to join in one gigantic conflagration. And it's not going to burn out in one dramatic whooosh. This Moon is funneling all of the sign's impulses – passionate, courageous, aggressive, hair-trigger, devil-may-care – into rocket fuel that'll take us far from our current circumstances.

Aries Battalion Ignites Extraordinary Power

The New Moon's extraordinary influence and powers come from the Aries battalion accompanying it: four planets – Neptune, Mercury, ruler Mars and Saturn, and two dwarf planets – Eris and Chiron.

The planets are linked in a protracted conjunction early in the sign, reporting creativity and faith, unpremeditated thoughts and words, assertiveness and action, with maturity and commitment lending the possibility of controlling the firepower.

The Sun/Neptune conjunction of February 20 is at the core, contributing the manifested creativity and spiritual warrior potentials of their meeting. The Sun, Moon, Mercury and Mars come into the event having met with and been softened by Neptune, which may have the effect of taking a shot or two of tequila for courage; all but Mars have also been grounded and regulated by Saturn.

Mars and Saturn Bring Wisdom and Direction

Mars' conjunction with Saturn happens two days later, on April 19, but that meeting is already affecting the Moon. By itself this pairing would bring frustration, or the start/stop of one foot on the accelerator and one on the brake. In the midst of this combustion, it offers wisdom, containment and direction, not to mention awareness of responsibility and consequences. And has the power to restrain this energy from exploding into blasts of blind fury.

Focus is also within reach, rather than firing willy-nilly. There's a pathway to tactical strikes and targeted action, as well as to summoning the force of community and technology. The openings come from a sextile from Mars, Aries' ruler and the god of war, remember, and Pluto, lord of death and ruler of subterranean and hidden powers. Fair warning: that collaboration could also inspire breathtaking, death-defying risks. This sextile is setting up the playing field coming in July, when all the outer planets will connect in fire and air and rewire reality.

Eris and Chiron Infuse Bold Disruptiveness

What about the other members of the outfit? At the far end of the sign, the dwarf pair – Eris and Chiron — is in a tight conjunction alongside the New Moon. This pack promises fighting for rather than against, or rather than stirring the pot just because it can. They are infusing - or inflaming - the New Moon with bold disruptiveness, burning and abiding wounds of aggression and masculinity, and the drive to fight.

All these qualities will not just burn in the actions that roll out from this New Moon. They will also burn inside you, and inside each one of us. We're igniting into greater daring and more passionate agency and autonomy.

And Eris' presence in particular adds a sense of balance. She is the sister of Mars, the warrior god who rules this Moon. She is herself a goddess of war, although her methods are more stirring conflict and divisiveness than running at anyone with a conventional weapon. She's teaming with the feminine forces of the Moon, as well as the masculine forces of the Sun and Chiron. That balance is part of the fires being set. What's igniting is not men against women, but the masculine and feminine within each of us.

No Time to Think – Just Ignite and Run

Most of April's astrology has been spurring us out of stuck places. This installment does a lot more. It's not allowing time to think, or calculate odds, or draw up a plan, or gather resources and allies. It's setting off a starting gun in our psyches, perhaps in our very cells.

Approach this New Moon knowingly. As the calendar rushes us towards it, make the effort to remind yourself of what you want. And where you'd like to go. At least face a direction you want to explore. And when the energies erupt, run with them.
