Lunar Eclipse In Scorpio: May 5th

Lunar Eclipse In Scorpio: May 5th

May 5th ~ 12th

Frodo: I can’t do this, Sam

It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories Mr Frodo.

The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam?

Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

~ J.R.R. Tolkien (The Two Towers)

The Last of the Scorpio Eclipses falls on May 5th at 1:23 pm here on the East coat of the United States, that would be 11:23 AM on the West Coast and 6:23 pm in Great Britain. This is a Lunar Eclipse, which coincides with the Full Moon. Therefore in order to see the Eclipse it would have to be at night time, after the Sun has set. This is not a dramatic blood red moon eclipse, as this is a Penumbral Eclipse, in which the Moon merely dips into the outer edges of the Earth’s shadow (umbra). Areas where you will be able to see at least a part of the eclipse are: Parts of Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, parts of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and Antarctica.

This is a South Node Lunar Eclipse, where the South Node in Scorpio is trying to show us what is needing to be purified, released, let go of, in order for us to proceed. In the sign of Scorpio it can even seem as if we are needing to release the darkest and most loathsome elements of our lives. Those things that we either feel that we have no power and control over, or those things that we have been trying to ignore, in hopes that they would just go away. South Node in Scorpio represents the most reprehensible bits of Scorpio: those things we fear, loathe, or are disgusted by; those things that undermine our strength and threaten our ability to thrive.

We could try to ignore these things, and hope that they would just go away. But they don’t. It’s like ignoring an infection, hoping it will just cure itself. Only to then have it continue to putrefy, and get ever stronger. It’s telling us: Look at this terrible injustice. Look at this corruption. Look at this broken stuff over there. It needs to be fixed, repaired, readdressed.

Scorpio stuff is hard to fix. It’s often deeply embedded, or like we are having to face huge forces that we either have no control over, or are so much larger than ourselves. And like Frodo and Samwise we feel a bit like David facing off with Goliath. But also like Frodo and Samwise, we can’t turn back. We have no recourse but to go forward. And the reason we are needing to go forward is because there really is some good in this world, and it’s also really worth fighting for. Even against extraordinary forces.

Full Moons are times of culmination, realization and completion. Lunar Eclipses add another element. Because these can also be turning points in our lives. And because the Lunar Eclipse falls at 14º Scorpio 52’, this will be even more so for those people who have sensitive points in their natal charts from 12-18º of the fixed signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. It may be as simple as having a sudden realization about something that changes your whole perspective, the result of which you will never quite see things the same again.

Changeable, unpredictable, and sometimes surprising, many of the eclipses since April 2022 have involved the planet Uranus. Speeding us along at this cosmically rapid pace, society is dealing with the ramifications of huge technological breakthroughs, outpacing some of the structures and guidelines that are supporting them. Like HAL in ‘1984’ Artificial Intelligence is leaving some scientists in awe of the possibilities while trepidatious about its possible consequences.

Things seem to often end at the Lunar Eclipses at the south node. There can be a sadness, and even grief for those things, people and experiences as they fall away. But there can also be an undercurrent of anticipation for a future that can hold ever greater promise and fulfillment. That is what we are needing to hold on to. And if we were to look for the remedy for what ails us, look to the sign of Taurus, where we currently find the North Node of the Moon. Taurus is a sign of value. It is a sign that honors safety, security, simplicity and sustainability. A sign of natural goodness and beauty. The small things that matter.
