“Discover why small routines steady change” ~Crystal Wind
This week’s Virgo New Moon arrives as a practical reset after eclipse turbulence. Thor’s Hammer and a stationing Uranus ask for flexibility without frenzy. Use the dark of the Moon to gather yourself, then seed simple, livable changes when the lunation opens.

"Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habits. In fact, the more new things we try ~ the more we step outside our comfort zone ~ the more inherently creative we become, both in the workplace and in our personal lives." ~ Janet Rae-Dupree
On September 10th (or 11th depending on where you are in the world), we have a New Moon at 18º Virgo 26’. Here in the Northern Hemisphere. Virgo season is when we send the children off to school, return from the beach, and get our lives back on track. This is when we restore order back into our lives, especially after the semi-chaotic Eclipses of August, and get back down to business. With a close sextile to Mars, and at the apex of a configuration known as Thor’s Hammer, it will be none too soon. For this is a Moon of Action.
The New Moon in Virgo stands as a tremendous vehicle and motivator to create order out of what ever is now left us. The disorder. The sudden shifts. The new information that careened into our consciousness like a thunderbolt. Whether positive or negative we are needing to adjust. This Moon will be about regaining our footing, and restoring some balance in our lives.
In the meantime, until the New Moon, although we will find ourselves eager to get our lives in order: organizing, picking up the pieces, and seeking answers. Don’t rush it. Use the New Moon to get things started. Until then we are in the dark of the Moon when we are asked to slow down, tie up some loose ends, gather our wits about us, and go within. Self-soothing. Self-healing. Self-acceptance are all on the agenda. Can the peaches. Gather the harvests of what we were giving birth to in the wake of the eclipses.
For those who are on the cutting edges of change, the upcoming New Moon can bring us the coping mechanisms that will be needed in order to adjust to those changes. Thor’s Hammer is a configuration of immense power, channeled through the humble but efficient New Moon in Virgo. This is about gathering the forces, and channeling all of that energy and intensity into taking care of all the necessary details, people and things that support our everyday well-being.
Thor’s Hammer will expose states of oppression that we have been putting up with, but are no longer tenable. We may not even know we’ve been doing so, until they are pointed out and can no longer be ignored. Sometimes we accustom ourselves to an uncomfortable situation because that is what we have always known. Or we do so out of fear of the consequences of saying No More. Or we do so because it’s easier to live with a familiar ache or pain, than it is to face the uncomfortable truth of the necessity for change. That is until Thor’s Hammer comes to call.
This configuration exists due to a square that is emerging between the two denizens from the far realms of the Kuiper Belt: Pluto and Chiron. The New Moon occurs at the approximate opposite point of the midpoint in that square. Far enough away to see things objectively and in a new light. Yet involved enough to feel the growing discomfort. Venus agrees. There are discomforts that need to be resolved. Endings left undone. She is feeling it too. And a sextile to Mars will be asking us to DO something about it.
Venus who has now entered the shadow before her retrograde phase, knows all about the Pluto/Chiron square. She is entering the heart of it. And diving deeply into all of it. The heartaches, the intensity, the sorrow. But also the healing and resolution that can eventually come out of this significant cycle of Venus which can also bring healing and resolution. On September 10th, Venus drags us down with her into the underworld as she enters Scorpio. Intensity grows as old wounds resurface demanding to be healed once and for all.
And the New Moon steps in here as a willing partner seeking the best healers, therapists, therapies and healing methods for whatever ails us. We will be speaking more to this intense Venus cycle over the next several weeks (it’s kind of hard to avoid), but in the meantime the New Moon, supercharged by Thor’s Hammer, and motivated by Mars, is also accompanied by a brilliant Grand Trine when Mercury (ruling planet of the New Moon in Virgo) enters Libra and trines both Uranus and Pluto.
Mercury is making this illuminating Grand Trine while also opposite Neptune (creating order out of the chaos). It’s been a challenge to create and follow through with our usual routines with all of the recent Uranian transits, but thankfully the New Moon in Virgo can help us to hobble things back together, create a plan and put it into action through Mars.
On the same day as the New Moon, Uranus stations for its retrograde phase which lasts until early February. One thing that the retrograde phase of Uranus is helpful for is Adjusting. This can include adjusting to any changes that have already been made, changes that we are currently making, as well as changes that we are planning to make in the future.
Without these internal adjustments, those changes would just feel like chaos and turmoil. Without change we would never Grow, we would never Evolve. But it can still be difficult to leave what is familiar in order to do so. The retrograde phase allows us to acclimate to those changes.
Planets are always stronger when they station, and with Uranus in Gemini it will be all we can do to settle ourselves as well as our minds. Use the New Moon to create new habits and routines that will not only support your physical well-being but also your mental well-being. Uranus in Gemini can increase things like Anxiety, Stress, and Distraction. And those who are most sensitive will really be feeling this station. Finding it difficult to stay on track? Make decisions? To calm the mind? This is the culprit.
On the other hand Uranus can also be incredibly illuminating and liberating. It reminds us that we don’t always have to keep doing things the way we always have. That there are alternatives. And they might even be better.
New Moons are times of new beginnings, and are often good times for seeding intentions. Virgo New Moons are wonderful for trying something new in the workplace, learning a new skill, changing up or adjusting your routines. It is a good time to begin a new health and wellness program, tweak a diet or begin a new fitness program. Look for new gadgets or apps that can simplify your life, and allows you to organize daily routines. Free up you schedule just enough to try new things. Rearrange your environment at home or in the workplace. Even small changes can free us up to think more creatively and intentionally with this amazing confluence of planetary activity.
If you wish to use the New Moon to set intentions or make some positive affirmations, wait until the New Moon on September 10th (or 11th depending on where you are) in order to do so. And try to seed these within the New Moon phase, from the New Moon on September 10/11th (11:27 pm Eastern Daylight Time in New York; 8:27 pm on the West Coast and 4:27 am on the 11th in the UK) up until the Crescent Moon on Monday the 14th. Make them positive. And make them your own.
Some possible intentions or affirmations for the New Moon in Virgo might be:
- By creating order out of the existing chaos, I make space for new ideas to take root.
- I seek this wisdom by doing service, by strong search, by questions and by humility. ~ William Q. Judge
- Recognizing that health is the greatest of blessings, I will do what I can to promote my own and others' well-being.
- I stand in awe at nature’s bounty and wisdom, and its capacity to restore health and vitality.
- I see myself committed to creating the conditions for a healthier and less anxious life and lifestyle.
- May I honor Goodness, the Goddess and the Creator by giving service to all that live, including those who do not have a voice of their own.
- I strive for improvement instead of expecting perfection.
