Break Free from the Culture Cage

Break Free from the Culture Cage

Last night, I came across a comment on an older post I shared on Facebook—a memory about witnessing a tender moment between a Hispanic couple on a flight.

A moment filled with softness, love, and deep humanity. I wrote it over a year ago. But the comment accused me of racism simply because I mentioned their ethnicity.

Would I have noted if they were white? Maybe. Maybe not. The point wasn’t their race. The point was the beauty of the moment. And I don’t exclude context when I tell stories—because culture, color, age, class, background… these shape the moment. They give it richness, texture, and truth.

Let me be clear: I am not racist because I acknowledge culture. I am not prejudiced because I include color. I am a storyteller. I notice. I witness. I reflect. I honor.

What’s truly harmful is this dangerous narrative where we start confusing recognizing differences with weaponizing them. The tiptoeing around our collective wounds is what perpetuates the wound. The more we try to “not see” race or background, the more we rob ourselves of the chance to understand one another.

We are not meant to be the same. Our strength is not in sameness. It’s in compassion. In curiosity. In honoring our edges and where they overlap. I have eight children and they are from different cultures, colors, and backgrounds. Their stories are all of our stories. Their differences are their magic!

The political climate right now?
It’s unhinged. It’s turning the sacred nuances of humanity into landmines. And I’m not here for that. I’m here for real. For raw. For stories that remind us that love and pain, joy and grief, dance through every culture, every color, every story.

So yes—I will continue to mention race, culture, age, and class when they matter in my stories. Because they do matter. Not to divide, but to connect.

If your instinct is to silence a storyteller because they see the world through more than one lens, ask yourself:
Who taught you that naming a thing is shameful?
Who made you believe color should be hidden rather than celebrated?

If we are going to heal this world, we have to stop policing language and start expanding hearts.

If you read my stories, read them with your soul. Not your judgment.

I write for the bridge, not the wall.

I love you and I don’t care gender, social class, color, culture, or anything else that seems to be the reason for division.
