Getting Back in Shape Fast

Last year, I was in the best shape I’ve been in for years — I was running, lifting weights, walking a lot, stretching, and doing calisthenics. I lost 10 lbs. and felt really great.
This year, I’ve been neglecting my fitness somewhat, as I’ve been much more focused on chess and other things. I’ve been moving less (though still moving) and gaining a bit of weight. I tend to gain weight very easily!
So recently I decided it’s time to get fit again. I’ve been starting slowly, but here’s my plan:
Build a Foundation with Walking
I’m adding in walking with family and on calls. Walking is one of the best ways to build a strong foundation of fitness.
Add Light Running: I stopped running this year because of a recurring heel injury. I’m sprinkling in a bit of running as I walk to build fitness without overdoing it.
Strength Training: Fellow 50+ year olds — do a little strength training to stay strong as you age. I do pull-ups, dumbbell lifts, and bodyweight squats. Later, I may add barbell squats and deadlifts, but nothing too heavy for now.
Fun Activities: A few times a week, I plan to play basketball (just shooting around for fun) and ride a bike. Fun movement keeps me motivated and consistent.
Eat Whole Foods: I love whole plant foods. Vegan proteins like lentils, black beans, tofu, tempeh, nuts, plus greens, mushrooms, and fruits — yum! Healthy eating is simple and satisfying.
It might sound like a lot, but I usually do only one or two things per day. Mostly, I listen to my body — what it feels up for.
