“Discover how clear seeing aligns words with actions in family life.” ~Crystal Wind

There’s an old saying that talk is cheap. Most of us have heard it so many times it barely registers anymore. But I think we’ve lost something in the familiarity. Because the truth underneath that worn-out phrase is something every family eventually has to reckon with — words carry real power, but it’s what we actually do that tells the truth about who we are.
If you’ve spent any real time in spiritual circles, you’ve probably heard about discernment. It gets treated like this mystical thing, reserved for monks or people who fast for forty days. But discernment, at its most practical level, is just the ability to see clearly. To tell the difference between what sounds right and what is right. Between the thing that looks good and the thing that actually nourishes. And nowhere does that matter more than in family life.
The Weight of Words
Let me be honest about something. I grew up in a household where words flew around like weather. If someone was angry, you heard about it. If someone was sorry, you heard about that too. Love was spoken out loud, often. Promises were made on Sunday and sometimes kept by Tuesday. Not always. But often enough that I believed them when they came.
Here’s what I’ve come to understand about words: they are not nothing. The idea that words are just air — that’s wrong. Words have genuine creative power. A blessing spoken over a child can become the voice they hear in their darkest moments, long after the person who said it is gone. A curse, a careless label, a nickname that stings — those stick too. Sometimes they stick for decades.
I know a woman whose father told her she was the smart one, the capable one, the one who’d go far. Her brother was told he was the sensitive one, the one who needed looking after. Both carried those words into their forties. She became a high achiever who couldn’t rest. He became someone who never quite trusted he could stand on his own. Those words shaped whole lives.
So let’s not pretend words don’t matter. They do. Proverbs says the tongue has the power of life and death. That’s not a metaphor — it’s a description. But here’s where discernment comes in. Because words alone — even beautiful, true, powerful words — are incomplete. They are the beginning of something, not the whole thing.
The Test of Action
This is where it gets uncomfortable. I can tell my children I love them until I’m blue in the face. I can post about family values. I can quote scripture about honoring your father and mother. I can give a whole speech at Thanksgiving about gratitude and togetherness. But if I’m not actually present — if I’m staring at my phone during dinner, if I dismiss their feelings when they’re hurting, if I break my word when keeping it is inconvenient — then my words are just noise. Pleasant noise, maybe. Comforting noise. But noise.
Action is the proof. It’s the receipt. Spiritual discernment, the real kind, learns to read that receipt. It learns to look past the language and watch the pattern. Jesus said you’ll know them by their fruits, not by their words. Not by their intentions. Not by what they meant to do. By the fruit.
Think about what that means in a family. A spouse who says they’ll change but doesn’t. A parent who promises to show up and consistently doesn’t. A child who says they’re fine but whose behavior tells a different story. Discernment means seeing what’s actually happening, even when it contradicts the story everyone is telling — including you.
“Words have genuine creative power. A blessing spoken over a child can become the voice they hear in their darkest moments, long after the person who said it is gone.”
Discernment Without Cynicism
Now here’s the tricky part. It would be easy to take all of this and become bitter. To decide that words are worthless, that promises are lies, that you should trust nothing but cold hard evidence and keep your heart armored at all times. That’s not discernment. That’s just self-protection dressed up as wisdom.
Real spiritual discernment holds two things at once. It honors the power of words and it insists on the test of action. It doesn’t dismiss someone’s sincere apology just because they’ve struggled to follow through before. But it also doesn’t pretend an apology is the same as changed behavior. It can say, I believe you mean that, and I need to see it too. Both of those can be true in the same breath.
Families need this kind of discernment desperately. Because families are where we’re most likely to give unlimited grace without boundaries, or to build walls so high that love can’t get in. The middle path — the narrow one — is discernment. It’s the willingness to say, I see your words, and I’m watching for your actions, and I love you enough to do both.
What This Looks Like in Practice
I think about my own family dinner table. The way someone says they’re fine when they’re not. The way I sometimes say I’m listening when I’m really waiting for my turn to talk. The small promises — I’ll help with that tomorrow, I won’t do that again — and the way they either build trust or slowly erode it.
Every family is a classroom for discernment. Every argument, every reconciliation, every ordinary Tuesday night is a chance to practice aligning words and actions. To mean what you say and then do what you said.
And here’s the beautiful thing. When words and actions finally line up — when someone says they love you and then shows up, consistently, in small unglamorous ways — that’s where trust is built. Not in the grand gesture. Not in the speech. In the pattern.
I’ve watched families where people talk a beautiful game and live a broken one. I’ve watched families where nobody says much but they show up every single time. And I’ve watched the rare ones — learning to do both. To speak life and then build it with their hands. That’s the goal. Not perfection. I don’t know anyone who’s pulled that off. But the honest attempt. The willingness to let your actions back up your words, and to let discernment guide both.
The Gift of Clear Seeing
Maybe the best way to think about spiritual discernment in family life is as a kind of vision. Not supernatural. Just clear seeing. The ability to recognize when someone’s words are carrying life, and honor that. And the courage to recognize when they’re not — when words and actions have split apart — and gently insist on the truth.
Your family deserves your words. Give them good ones. Blessings, encouragement, honesty, love spoken out loud. But they also deserve your actions. The showing up. The follow-through. The difficult, boring, daily work of being who you said you’d be.
Words have power. Actions are real. And a family built on both — that’s something worth building.
