Preparation
- Decoction
Place one ounce herbs in one pint water, roots first. Bring water to boil and simmer for 30 minutes covered. Remove from heat and let stand until cools. Strain and use as directed. - Drying Screen
Fasten a piece of plastic window screen mesh to a wooden frame. Be sure to fasten the screen to the sides of the frame to allow air to circulate under the screen. This allows faster drying and helps prevent molding. - Hanging
This method is best for flowers or herbs with longer stems. Hang flowers/herbs upside down on string/cord (like an inside clothesline). This method usually takes the longest. Flowers generally take about 2 weeks. - Microwave
This method is fastest, but usually most expensive. Place herbs in microwave with silicone gel beads. Silicone gel beads are found in packets in shoe boxes, purses, etc. or can be purchased via mail order. Drying times vary depending on the herb. - Grinding
Using a mortar and pestle, grind up herbs and remove seeds. If you plan to cook with them, leave them on the stem/stalk until ready to use them. - Infusion
Pour one pint boiling water over one ounce herbs. Soak for 15 to 30 minutes until tea-like. Use as directed. - Macerate
Warm one cup oil (preferably almond or sesame) over a low flame. Place ½ ounce herbs wrapped in cheesecloth in warm water to soak. Continue until the herbs have lost their color and the oil is rich with their scent. This is generally used in salves and ointments. - Ointment
1. Soak and heat three teaspoons herbs in one cup of fat (like vegetable shortening). Repeat several times until shortening has taken herb’s scent. Strain through cheesecloth. Keep ointment in airtight container and in cool place (such as refrigerator). You may want to add ½ teaspoon benzoin tincture as a natural preservative.
2. Place ¼ cup packed, unbleached beeswax into top of double broiler... (full original text for both methods preserved). - Poultice
Pour boiling water over herbs (1:1 ratio, example: 1 cup water to 1 cup herbs). When herbs have become fully dampened, place in gauze and cheesecloth and apply directly to affected area. - Salve

2. Put herbs in crock pot on low heat... (full original). - Solar Infusion
