23 Degrees

23 Degrees

23 Degrees

It’s what we have just embarked on,
in this year of our lord.

It is a prime number, the lowest
consisting of consecutive digits.

It’s how many pairs
of chromosomes
humans hold.

It’s an official “enigma,”
thanks to William Burroughs.

It’s one of the best-known and oft repeated
biblical verses: the shepherd’s psalm.

And, it’s what separates our planet from every other planet
in our solar system, our universe.

Perhaps our multiverse.

Gifting Gaia with her breath, her seasons.
Her blue, her green,
her rainbows,

this now.

Thanks to a collision with a “sister” planet in the early formation
of earth that not only caused a 23 degree tilt in our axis,
but the creation of our moon.

Which, after the dust settled,
and the radical spinning eased,
drew to just the perfect distance
from our planetary mass to make
what’s happened on our
terrestrial plane
happen:

life.

Perhaps it is therefore wise to see the significance
of this number, this year, this day, which may
involve a bit of chaos in an effort
to bear its becoming.

I Ching hexagram 23:
splitting apart

…which life does to make life.

It is winter, north of the 23rd parallel,
the tropic of cancer.

A land pulled away from its sun,
and continuously pulling back.

No thing is fixed that lives.
No thing permanent.
For even death
marshals
new life.

And so we breathe,
with the trees, the
waters, the whales,
the newts, the
lichen, the
spiders,
rocks,
cells,
atoms.

The seen
and unseen.

Every end
a beginning.

An enigma.
Paradox.

Continuing
what has been
started and ever
continues to
start.
