“The dream of my life is to lie down
by a slow river and stare at the light
in trees — to learn something by
being nothing.” —Mary Oliver

Pondering form,
I happen on a tree
felled long ago.

Wind.
Lightning.
Infestation.

Something caused it to fall
onto the forest floor under
which it had been
deeply rooted.

Unfathomably
integrated.

Feeding hosts of living
things, above and below
the earth’s mantle.

Not least,
human
kind.

Now its integration
takes a new form:
disintegration.

Still feeding the earth,
but now in the form of
the slow dismantling
of its previous
arrangement.

Decomposing
it recomposes
its life-giving.

Becoming a substrate
upon which much
depends.

Fungi, insects, molds, mosses,
invertebrates — hosts of
microscopic myriads
that live on it.
With it.

Because
of it.

Brought into being by
forces of nature that are
not in competition
— far from it.

The highest most
complex collaboration
is ever at work
in service
of life.

Complements
in concert.

It is how growth grows.
How expansion
ranges.

How evolution
pirouettes.

And learning
plays hide
and seek

with seeing.

Every encounter involving
having to interact, exchange, make
space, allowance, for something
new to find a place in the
synaptic jungle of
sentience.

Of being.

Solid is what
we are here
to dissolve.

The notion of it, the
illusion of it, the
trap of it.

No such thing.

All teems.

Atomic and subatomically,
not to mention biologically,
geologically… .

And never mind the metaphysics,
and the arrays of physics,
quanta, examining
what here is,
and isn’t.

As far as we can see.

Tectonic plates ever in motion.
As our earth spins round
her roiling center.

Her core a sun, too.

Generating currents
of all manner
of fluid.

The tides of
breath, just
one of the
many.

There is an inherent
coming together in
the coming apart.

[For there is no
such thing as
separation.]

Of masses, pressures,
differences in structure
and density, of color,
temper and kind.
Give and take.

To “cleave” is
both and.

ABCs require
the rest of the
alphabet to
speak.

A disordering
of its order that
benefacts
order.

In essence.

It is all here
showing us,
teaching us
eternity.

A miracle of
symbiosis, chemistry.
Alchemy.

Enormity
populating
the head
of a pin.

Life force energy is all,
that can neither be
created nor
destroyed.

Like magic,
it merely
changes
form.

Everything
always becoming
nothing in
particular.

Other
than
alive.

Making art
of time and
space.

For now,
I find myself
under wintered boughs
of white pine, birch, hemlock
beside a river
that sings

along.
