Emerald Shimmers This Body

Emerald Shimmers This Body

Emerald Shimmers This Body

“…and as kind as summer.”
—The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien

Adrift in a morn
of blooming blue,
I find myself held

weightless

by this
green body
who knows
mine for
its own.

Cradling
edges I hadn’t
perceived
wanting.

Honey sips on lips
hungry for the sweet of
this slake. Its balm.
Like no other.

Born in these flows
at least 12,000 years ago,
I surface new borne with each stroke
of hand, foot. Genius, this kettle
of ancient seminal ice
gifted by glaciers
on their leave.

A fringe of woodland
untouched in recent times by
the over reach of civilization—dubbed
thus by a lens shot too full of its own
dust—graces the swell of belly to
all manner of pilgrim seeking
as I a respite from the hard
baked land of pilgrimage.

Nearly brimmed moon
touching my natal sun
as the cosmos plays
with light far
far beyond.

Her breath is mine,
this goddess, this catchment
of wild earth so plenished with life,
gulping currents part selkie, part
child who know to breathe
fluent food.

Now narwal, now porpoise,
now supplicant, I
twirl her teals
with nary
a care
in the
wide
whole
world.

For I, like those
subsumed by
its treasure
before,
those transcending
a world lost in matter,
putting words to walks,
heroes living journey,
have paradise
for a pool.

What strange
good fortune to
live so near such
sacred shores,
clear depths a
crystalline ball
into which
I find

home.

My bounty lies
not in the bank,
but the banks.

“Heaven is under
our feet as well as
over our heads.”
—Henry David Thoreau, Walden
