They came in on a bouquet
of queen anne’s lace, yield of
a summer morn’s gardening.

I didn’t notice their arrival
until days later, sitting at
the table supping.

Swelling on a stem
caught my gaze:
what’s this?

A caterpillar striped
in greens, yellows,
black and white.

Now a second found
nestled in a lacey head
of this bloom of wild carrot.

After a spellbound moment,
I took to finding out who these
marvelous creatures might be.

Black swallowtail butterflies,
now three — to be — busily feeding
on the blossoms, were the gifts given.

Having witnessed a predecessor
be devoured days before by a wasp,
we thought to keep them in.

Fresh lace, fresh vase, fresh water,
and a week hence, sated, they went still
forming half-moons on the stems.

Each in turn becoming a chrysalis
of equal beauty to its crawling form,
holding space for its wholly next.

Melting, effectively, into a creature
whose wings will spirit it to far
places, flowers, heavens.

How wondrous, this present.
How propitious this raft of fecund lace
gracing my garden, a cultivated meadow

offering sanctuary to the
myriads of life, like me,
becoming ever new.
