The Light of a Black Moon

The Light of a Black Moon

The Light of a Black Moon

It has not escaped my musings'
noticing that this new year
begins with a black moon.

As it is the second
new moon in the last
calendar month

of a year now past.
Now made fresh by a
moon whose symbol holds

new beginnings. New structures,
it being in capricorn, a novel start
to make our earth our home—

well and truly, being balanced
in polarity on its axis with cancer.
A former dancer, balance is some

thing of an art here, too. A skill
honed by spotting a still point
when spinning. When you can

spot such a point. For it is not
impossible to find our balance, our feet,
in the dark, just more difficult.

We orient ourselves by light.
Even the most diffuse cast of light,
no matter how mysterious,

sibylline. Like Gaia herself,
perhaps. Our swirl of galaxy,
too, perchance—fulcrumed.

Earth is art school.
We, like she, the canvas, score, through
which divine composes what is, shall be.

A foreshadowing, sure, with so
pregnant a belly of opacity shimmered
of stars, with a proviso:

what we fix
in our focus,
we pocus.

We are that magical in our arts, our craft.
So we approach the ink of unmapped vista
with a reverent and attuned night vision—grace.

Beholding the handiwork of heavens,
portents and potentials, with
a soft open gaze

the clear-eyed
wonder of
a child.

However distant the light seems,
it shines its bearings, even, especially, when
the moon is black, even as the world

seems lost to so, so many;
it is when lost, truly lost, that
we seek to find our way

home. As we are made
of stardust, forged of
starlight, all we

have to do
is look

up.
