Warmed Blood

Warmed Blood

Warmed Blood

She was aware of me
before I saw her next
to the path carved in
to the hill beside the
silent woodland pond
coiled so peacefully to
receive the noontime
sun onto the black of
her scales painted with
soft brown diamonds.

A wonder that I saw
her there, that I didn’t
startle on inexplicably
seeing her a foot from
my feet. Her girth, her
length, belied her age
and I could feel within
me a stopping of time.

In this cosmic pause,
astonishing me, I felt
myself assess my path,
my way — forward.

Studying this
moment as she
studied me with the
black pearls of her
steady gaze.

I spoke to her
softly, gently.
Telling her
how very
beautiful
she is.

I imagine she
rarely hears such
words spoken
by such as
I am.

The pearls
gleamed.

She moved not
a single muscle
of her coiled
lounge.

And it came
upon me that
should I proceed
along this narrow
bit of trail, stepping
not a quarter of a foot
from her, she would
have to move.

Her posture said to
me that she was not
aroused by fear. And
as I felt into this, her,
I was aware of my own
non-arousal of fear.

Suddenly I knew
with great clarity
the way to proceed.

That to step forward
would disturb her
idyll in the now
withering sun,
an interruption
I could not sanction.

And though to get
to where I was seeking
to go, I’d have to retrace
my steps and forgo the
rounding of this little
pond to meet the
trail up farther,
I did so with
a stunning
willingness
not to interfere
with her repose.

To not disturb
the peace of this
wild place, this wild
presence who shared
a wild moment
of peace
with
me.

And my
whole being
beamed as I made
my way truly
forward
now

into
the
wild

and
free.
