Weight, Weight

Weight, Weight

Weight, Weight

There is a piece of baggage
I cannot seem to
let go of.

It slogs with me
wherever
I roam.

And so I lug it
round like a baby
strapped to my
flesh and bone.

I’ve sought to leave it
places, random places,
in hopes that it will end up
in a room of lost baggage
for someone to pick through,
claim, putting it behind me
so that I might travel on
unencumbered. Still,
it holds on, and I
carry it on.

And while I’ve eschewed
this lumbering parcel’s freight,
blaming myself for holding on
when all I want to do is
let go, clearly there is
something within it
that wants to be
pulled out, gone
through—seen.

So I rise this holy morn
feeling as I wish not to feel:
weighed down by what
I can’t seem to
let go of.

And it's occurred to me
that this is a fine state
to be bringing to the
threshold of this
sacred portal:

learning to be weightless
whilst being grounded
on this swirling patch
of blue green
studding
the cosmos.

That this weight
has a mission quite
like that of my soul,
and it is only heavy
when I refuse to
set it down
now and
then,

sorting through
what’s inside with
great care, finding
the right time and
place to open
it up and
peer
in—

not making
life wrong for
giving me cargo
to carry from
here
to there,
nor gravity
for keeping
my feet on
the earth.

Wings are not yet
fitted to mankind,
I nod. We’ve more
time traveling on
foot to evolve
into them.

And so I dream
of flying even as
my would-be
feathers flake
off as so much,
so much
dust.

And I learn
to trust my
journey and
the all that
comes
with it.
