Winter Garden
Showing, as ever,
the beauty of life
as it lives.
Season come,
season go.
Even as this,
drawing so near
the sun's farthest,
lowest arc of shine
on this northern
hemisphere
of mother
earth,
comes
by day.
Not one to clear
what remains of
summer — no,
such rich habitat
for those wintering
outside of lumber
and glass — I see
the splendor that
blossoms even
as it sleeps.
No longer host
to bees, it now
nestles seeds
and newts and
mantis eggs,
tending
roots and
rhizomes
and time
that has
no hands.
Offering its
unconditional
presence
to what
is, as
always,
now
— its stillness,
its yielding, as gift
to a human world
that struggles to
relinquish to the
brief span of
rest from
perennial
growth.
Though
it sees,
everywhere,
its signs, its
reflection.
Its everness
held in soft
suspension.
Epiphany
blooms here,
in respite, its
interlude.
In the silage
of silence.
Resting into
a rhythm of
slowness,
ease.
An adagio
written in
drifting
snow.
Now bare
of green and
blossom, its
branching
reaches
inside,
finding
me a
wayfarer
to its bounty,
its spare
beauty,
still.
Still.
