Wintering

Wintering

Wintering

So brief its day,
ranging shadows, shades
of cobalt, pewter,
bismuth.

Its blunt force, bite
so fierce, so
insisting.

Its breath
a vapor.

On its frost,
a lullaby
in half
tone.

Above
low tide.

This least well loved
of the life cycling
of our planet.

But just under
the mute of color,
the leafless, deflowered,
lies a nakedness
becked.

A baring of
essence.

Primordial
suspension.

The still
of life in
repose.

Letting drop
the catchments
governing
flow.

For a time.

A time oft resisted,
wrapped in our drab,
vulnerable flesh.

Slow now.
Slow now.

Sounds the
snow bunting
signaling
return.

It has held me
in its thrall as
far back as
far goes.

And, pilgrim
to its hither,
I supplicate
my edges
to its
soft
waltz.

Swirling,
swirling, I,
like it, am
making
new.

It is my birthday
this cross-quarter
day of mid-winter.

That of my
no longer of-earth
mother tomorrow.

How nestled I
still feel in the womb
that is Pachamama
—her deep caves,
submerged
trenches.

While all about me
crystalizes in the
nature of less,
there stirs
what’s
hidden
away.

Held in
torpor.

Alive to the
light arcing up
from the first
of its days
dubbed
l'hiver.

Whose
stripped fields,
skeletal stands,
divine that vision
may quest less
distracted.

Listen…

it is the
silence
signing.
