May 2023 Monthly Forecast

The theme for May is: “TENSION”.

Tension this month is the condition of pressure or a relentless force causing anxiety, strain, crisis, release, and change.

We are stretched tight, some of us more than others, as we attempt to hold on to the past and control the future. The emotional center of the year is highlighted as we clear out old stagnation and get things flowing in a more positive direction. Fear of change and fear of the unknown is what keeps us grasping tightly to our defenses, old habits and outdated beliefs.

It is hard to relax in a state of tension. Sleep cycles can be disturbed and we may be hypervigilant about what may or may not be just around the corner. Anxiety unconnected to any real situation may be a constant companion to some that are prone to it. There is physical tension in the body, pointing to necessary adjustments in self-care; emotional tension, often erupting in drama as old repressed feelings find their way up and out; and mental tension, especially related to the need to know and the fear of the unknown.

All of this may sound extremely challenging, however there can be a very positive outcome to the month but it requires certain disciplines and the willingness to deal with feelings and emotions without blame or judgment. The tension brings up what has been brewing under the surface, sometimes dramatically, much like a volcano finally releasing its pressure. And much like a volcano, the release can be destructive but it can also build new fertile ground. We need to surrender to the process, keep an optimistic attitude, and practice enjoying our life, no matter what.

The discipline includes using discernment to differentiate your emotions as opposed to the feelings of others especially if they are loaded with projections. Is the tension coming from within yourself? Or is it coming from outside with expectations? This is a practice of taking responsibility for what is yours and being able to leave be what is not. The actions and projections of others may trigger you emotionally this month. Don’t take anything personally but at the same time use the trigger to examine your own feelings and emotional reactions, taking responsibility for what needs to change. We can heal deeply and have the opportunity for permanent and powerful transformation. If the tension is from within, perhaps you are being called to release, forgive and reset. It may be an attitude, habit, or something more tangible like a whole relationship.

Another discipline is to strengthen your trust in spirit. When you can truly trust that all is as it should be, especially if you have stayed on track, the anxiety falls away and you can stop being hypervigilant in trying to control the future. We need to trust that we are all co-creating the future in the best way possible, even if our personalities are not yet clued into the plans.

Another discipline is to keep the drama to a minimum. We are strangely addicted to drama so it is easy to use any state of conflict to spin a captivating story. The more focus and energy you put into drama, the more drama you will create. If you truly wish to navigate well through any personal crisis, you will stay in your own lane, deal with your personal feelings and move to the next step with neutrality as quickly as possible.  The challenge this month will be to allow others their space to be where they are in their process without interfering. Unless you are directly affected by their drama in a negative way, let them be. As a wise teacher we had many years ago said, “It is not your problem”.

The most important discipline this month is to keep your vibration high as much as possible. This includes choosing to see beauty in everything, choosing humor and playfulness instead of being irritated all the time, choosing to always see the glass half full instead of half empty and choosing to experience life as abundant in all ways. It helps to spend time in nature or in your garden, focusing on what is growing and what is abundant. It helps to be around others who are also practicing these disciplines. Use the tension to be productive and gain traction on intentions, projects and anything you are inspired by. It is a creative time for expanding your awareness and transforming your experience of life provided you can truly release what you have been holding on to so tightly out of the fear of change. Take a risk and do it. Otherwise the tension will cause you no end of discomfort.

How the month shows up:


A challenging but productive month for personal growth. The discipline is to stay out of self-doubt, self-deprecation, self-judgment, regret, shame and guilt. It is possible for all of these to surface at one time or another due to emotional extremes caused by tension sometimes leading to crisis. You may experience tension pushing up against personal stagnation in any area that needs to be unblocked in order for you to move forward. If this leads to crisis, use it responsibly as a vehicle for personal change. Practice awareness and discernment when it comes to your issues as opposed to others projections.

It is helpful to have a good strong container of personal practices you can do every day to give you some grounding and purpose especially if you are experiencing turmoil, chaos, and a lot of change around you. Prayers, connecting with your allies and support, and any daily rituals that keep you connected to spirit are very helpful this month. Elements of major transformation have been put into motion and there is no stopping the flood. All you can do is to guide it well, with spiritual confidence and trust.

In embracing necessary release and change, you empower yourself with a sense of greater self-esteem and accomplishment, especially when overcoming an addiction or releasing a negative pattern or permanently changing a bad habit. Stay disciplined and work with the tension instead of resisting.


This is a challenging month for relationships. Emotional extremes can be judged, misinterpreted, and not handled well. Outbursts can be taken personally and, in the extreme, cause some damage. Compassion is needed as well as acceptance, understanding, and neutrality. If there has been discontent percolating under the surface, it is bound to come up and out this month. Instead of reacting defensively, look to where your responsibility may lie in the situation. In very extreme circumstances, a neutral third party should be engaged to mediate, so don’t be afraid of seeking help.

On the positive, much emotional baggage can be cleared and important relationships reset on a better ground. There is potential for estranged family members to clear the air, for any confusion about feelings between people to be clarified, new relationships to solidify and ones that are complete to be released in a good way.

Your relationship with yourself is also included. Any tension you feel from within needs to be examined and intentions set for improvement. If you engage your inner courage and stay with the program, you will feel a sense of freedom, have more energy, clarity, and enthusiasm for life.


The physical body is very important this month.  Tension, anxiety, stress, and pressure can all lead to a crisis around your health and well-being. It is critical to listen to your body and establish a good communication. Use the tension to create new habits, eliminate addictions and move towards a good self-care practice. It is essential to take care of the body and your body will communicate what it needs. Instead of judging discomfort as something negative or wrong, treat it as a message that something needs attention. If you can take care of your body, the response of well-being will give you the greatest satisfaction.

Your health also includes building flexibility and engaging in play. Try and engage in a practice every morning that brings in fun and play. It could be with music or dance or playing with a child or a pet. It will set your day up right and keep everything flowing in a higher vibration.

In terms of discipline, the toughest discipline is often around the physical body and its desires, whether they are healthy or not. So start small and discipline one baby step at a time.  Cut back little by little on unhealthy excesses and reward yourself for any small improvement. Moving the body in dance or walking or swimming or any exercise will also move the energy and make the other disciplines easier. Great personal empowerment and satisfaction comes from seeing tangible results from self-care and discipline.


Pay attention to the tension. If you are pressured from the inside, investigate what feels right and what does not. If you are pressured from the outside, investigate why and perhaps set some boundaries for yourself around personal projects that are fine just the way they are. If you are feeling judgment or doubt from others, don’t take it personally unless it strikes a chord in you. Approach new endeavors with caution this month as there may be layers of feelings and attachment that should be cleared before anyone gets on board.

It is a good month to examine what really inspires you, what you resent, what you are complete with, what you value, and where you wish to see yourself in a few years. If your current situation is not something that will get you there, think about what will. Don’t be impulsive with major changes unless you are very clear, and use caution when engaging others especially if they are in the middle of a huge emotional reset. If a project feels stagnant, make some changes to move it forward. If it is not right, it will fall apart. If it is right, it will gain traction.


The environment is influenced by what we are creating. In a month of tension, expect the environment to participate by creating its own tension. There may be more water events as the water element supports emotion. In your own environment pay attention to plumbing, leaks, drainage, clogs and flow. See any issues that come up as a reflection and metaphor for what may be happening in your own life.

We could see some volcanic activity – especially around the Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse on May 5th. We could experience greater fluctuations in tides, runoff, flooding, and anything having to do with water and the water element. Earth movement as a result can also be a factor. And, as usual, we suggest flexibility in any travel plans as nothing is predictable and sudden changes are likely.

Regarding your personal environment, in addition to watching water issues, take some time to be disciplined about clutter, clearing and releasing things you have an emotional attachment to that no longer serve you. Instead of feeling this as a loss, think of gifting it from a place of abundance and generosity.


May 1-7: A time where you can either be horrified or inspired by what you see you need to do for better self-care, discipline around home and work, and relationship issues that have challenging emotional content. Don’t get overwhelmed with the tension. Instead, use the tension as a vehicle for determination and stamina. Stay present with what is coming up and make a plan for good practices that will support you. As we approach the full moon and eclipse on the 5th, tension could culminate in a crisis that strains your ability to be grounded and neutral. Bring in humor, creativity and support. Even though good boundaries are necessary to stay out of drama, the support of others and engaging in community exchange can be helpful at this time.

May 5Full Moon in Scorpio is Friday, May 5 at 11:34 AM Mountain Daylight Time (MDT).

Known as the Flower Moon, it comes with an penumbral lunar eclipse. This can be a highly emotional time especially for relationships. The tension may focus on possessions, resources, expression of self and anything unresolved from the past. It is best to approach this time with acceptance and gratitude for all your tangible resources and support you have had along the way.

If there are feelings, deal with them. Watch for emotional triggers and potential irrational outbursts. If they come from others, don’t take them personally and stay in your own lane. If they originate from you, take responsibility and try not to project anything onto someone else through blame or judgment. Focus on your own healing, clearing and forgiveness. The eclipse energy is pushing us towards release and transformation. Reflect on your attachments with the intention to release what needs to stay in the past.

It is helpful to have a big picture vision so you don’t get mired in a narrow band of focus. The big picture should include your intention for improvement, balance, productivity and an appreciation and enthusiasm for the mystery of the unknown with the trust that all will unfold as it should.

May 8-15: Tension builds in the aftermath of the eclipse, especially if there are issues you are avoiding. This could be a time of great confusion as you sort through what is yours and what is not. It is difficult to get any mental clarity when the process is highly emotional. The best method is to listen to how you feel. Your heart knows what is yours and what isn’t probably better than your mind. If something does not feel right, examine it. If you react emotionally to a trigger, ask why and see if you can get to the root of the feeling. This is deep work and can transform your life if you stay with it.

On another note, allow the support of others, stay in humor, and keep things moving any way you can. Laughing at oneself is very healing and can aid in any release that is in process. Being in nature and receiving the grounding and balance it provides will also help to keep you on track. Make sure to purposely have some fun and engage in play as a way to stay in a higher vibration.

May 16-23: Things are definitely moving this week even if it feels like fits and starts. It is important to focus on details to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. As the highly emotional time evens out a bit, there may be some clean-up to do especially in the aftermath of arguments, disagreements or irrational outbursts that may have caused any damage. Take responsibility and don’t be afraid to apologize when an apology is warranted.

New beginnings get traction, and endings are accelerated. Stay in grace and beauty as you navigate this territory. Stay out of excessive drama and focus on positivity and what is real in your life. Optimism will go a long way in keeping you on the right track. Do your practices and stay disciplined and persistent in your progress especially towards self-care.

May 24-31: The focus for this time frame is abundance. Practice gratitude – especially around support, gifts from spirit, your tools, wisdom and personal medicine. This is a time to reflect on your resources, not only practical ones of the physical nature but all your resources. Examine your relationship to abundance and scarcity with the intention to bring in and receive whatever resources you need at this time to improve your life and to support your well-being. This is good window for establishing new relationships and solidifying cooperative endeavors and projects.

If you have been procrastinating ending something, dealing with past feelings, improving your self-care, eliminating an addiction or clearing up some communication, it will become apparent in a very tangible way. You will feel the tension of it and you will feel the unfinished business aspect. Do it now and free yourself.
